A comfortable ride, responsive handling, good visibility, simple controls, and a relatively spacious rear seat all combine to make the Impreza easy to live with. The hatchback's cargo versatility gives it an edge in practicality over the sedan version. Sport models come with snazzy wheels and a bit more equipment than more basic Imprezas.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Anonymous, QC (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"We have the base model 2014 Impreza which we bought for our daughter as her first car. While it does not have a lot of frills, or a back up camera, it is very solid vehicle and has great acceleration."

Anonymous, GA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"4 wheel drives kicks in quickly and works great"

Richard S., ON (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Adequate acceleration."

Anonymous, WA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"All wheel drive"

Anonymous, NC (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"It has pep. Car is very stable on driving services."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Acceleration and handling are superb. The 2.0 L engine is perfectly matched to the size and needs of this vehicle, merging on highways is a breeze."

Anonymous, OH (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Acceleration and handling are adequate. It is a nice handling car on the highway. In the mountains though it demands a higher work load on the driver. Hence the Ford Focus is fun to drive in the mountains. The Impreza is good just not as sporty. But it has sound solid handling with no thrills or surprises. It is a nice day all the way to town then we take the Ford Focus. If the weather or roads are iffy then we take the Subaru Impreza. I never wanted a Jeep hence the Impreza."

Judd S., VA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Poor fuel economy"

Anonymous, AL (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"CVT, so smooth acceleration, but a little noisy. Car handles well."

Dave V., MA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Acceleration not great. But handling in our weather (snow and ice) is excellent."

Walter F., OR (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Good visibility, throttle programming makes it feel sprightly around town, ride is as good as a larger car. Too much road noise on the highway."

Jonathan P., OR (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Handles very well, and turn ratio is great."

Joann P., FL (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Impreza is a zippy little car, once you get used to the flat four engine and how it has to wind up when accelerating. It is stable and has sufficient acceleration or most any circumstance."

Scott H., PA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"good power and handling for our area."

P K., WV (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Quick pick-up and great accelleration, hugs the road, bumps are soft, handling is swift and sure."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"All wheel drive is fantastic. For winter in Maine it is hard to imagine a better subcompact in terms of value and performance in adverse winter driving conditions."

Anonymous, ME (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"I expected the CVT to be a much smoother driving experience than it actually is. I also don't like the paddle shifters that must be used if I want to use any lower gear than D."

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"For what it is performs and handles well. Personally I would prefer a tighter suspension but that would affect the ride which or us is good (pets suffer from travel sickness, no problems in this vehicle). Acceleration and responsiveness always more than adequate. Safely performs every day and unusual events such as entering highways or accident avoidance."

Leonard D., CT (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Excellent pickup and speed, swerves quickly and easily while maintaining control"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Acceleration is a little bit slow, especially on the hill, but is satisfactory. Steeling is precise."

Elton W., NJ (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Steering is very precise, best I have ever had. On the other hand, the accelerator is way too sensitive. Hard to start from a stop without a jolt."

Alan S., WA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Engine revs really high before changing gear"

Anonymous, NC (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Car has excellent acceleration - I never have difficulty getting up to speed or passing. Car handles extraordinarily well."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"smooth driving with surprise get up and go!"

John G., CA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Steering is a little "squishy" but not as bad as Subaru used to be"

Anonymous, MA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"I like the gearing of the automatic -- good acceleration, fun to drive. Also very easy to park."

Dennis M., ON (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"I've driven my daughter's Impreza. I love it. She loves it. She says she has complete confidence that it will get her to the hospital (work) any day, in any weather. Her Dad and I feel safe knowing that's what we gave her to drive!"

Peggy T., NY (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Surprisingly fun to drive... handles well and has a relatively responsive throttle, given it's AWD."

Mark R., MO (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"We live in the mountains and the acceleration going up the hills is PITIFUL. My daughter frequently has to drop down so low to keep up the RPM or drive very fast not to lose momentum. I've heard this same complaint from other Subaru drivers. With the known dependability and cost of the Subaru, it should have better acceleration."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Acceleration and handling are superb. Engine noise and road noise are so loud that we cannot enjoy any music inside; so we do not take this car for long drives."

Naveen U., OH (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"The 2014 Impreza has only 148 HP, that is not enough for a car that weighs over 3,000 lbs. Even my wife says so."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Acceleration is just so-so. When building speed, the transmission is noisy. However these shortcomings are insignificant compared to the excellent handling and visibility the Impreza gives. A great car to drive."

RICHARD C., PA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Not very peppy, compared to 2005 Impreza."

Anonymous, OH (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"When accelerating to pass a car the transmission is a little sluggish for me."

RONALD W., NH (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"The engine powers the car all by itself. I have had an accident hitting a parked car while going into a space and have damaged the front of my car hitting a concrete wall at the end of a parking space because the car is going too fast, even with the brake. I now ride the brake constantly while parking. This is dangerous and stupid. I bought the car based on your recommendation. My gas mileage is less than predicted by a third, and as above, it is difficult to drive. I assume that the bumpe"

KATHRYN H., UT (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Handles well in snow. Nice mpg."

Anonymous, DE (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"The tech is very cumbersome and non-intuitive, essentially using as a 1964 radio. The drive experience is lagging, the 'continuous' CVT with paddle shifting 2.0i Limited engine takes a bit to catch up with direction-leading me to not trust its responsiveness in an emergency. The dealer can not yet teach me (after 2 years) when and how to use the paddle shifts - when I accidentally hit them it begins to rev a bit, so I hit it again to stop it. This could be reducing my mileage. Overall feels h"

RYNN B., MN (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"a bit under powered for some of the canyon roads"

ALAN H., UT (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"economical"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"CVT Transmission revs high upon initial acceleration and makes the car feel like its being overtaxed. Its also very loud."

R H., ON (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"does not have great acceleration, but adequate for my needs. Gas mileage more important than acceleration. Do not like the red dashboard lights at all."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Ali wheels drive in Winter is very usefull"

Anonymous, QC (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Acceleration and handling is exceptional. The steering control is the best of any car I have had."

G W., TN (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"I think the handling of the car in the winter is terrible in the snow. I had a different impreza and it handled bad also in the snow. Had snow tires on both cars"

DEBORAH F., NY (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"The engine is anemic: this is not a car that is good at passing without a bit of clearance. Its only advantage is reasonable mileage for an AWD car. Driving on the snow is not as good as with an Outback, maybe because of the lower ground clearance but I did not feel as confident with the Imprezza as with the Outback. Hence my disappointment (I realize it is less expensive but that is how I feel)."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"It is fun to drive. A very enjoyable experience.."

LEONARD C., NY (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"The hill holder warning comes on about once a month. The dealer says it is because I ride the clutch. Maybe but I have owned manual transmission cars all my life and I have yet to replace a clutch."

DAVID A., NB (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Car is slow in accelerating and is very noisy."

Anonymous, NV (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"handles exceptionally well in very wet conditions (as well as dry)."

Anonymous, WA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Acceleration is poor. Would benefit from an extra 20hp"

Anonymous, ON (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"I wish the car accelerated more quickly. I had a VW Rabbit before and I was used to the car taking off when I hit the gas, this is not the case with the Impreza."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"The Impreza 2.0i premium has permanent 4-wheel drive and feels secure on turns and snow cover roads."

ELTON W., NJ (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Plenty of torque at the low end, but somewhat lame on acceleration after the initial bump. Good handling in corners. Good brakes."

KAREN M., WA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"The Impreza handles extremely well in rain with all wheel drive . I'm very impressed with how well it accelerates on wet roads without spins or sliding!"

DAHNE R., FL (2014 Subaru Impreza)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Road noise is high. Seats, for long drives, can be uncomfortable"

Walter F., OR (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"The engine is a lot noisier than the Honda's engine, even after 14 years."

John L., MO (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Comfortable road car"

Paul M., PA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Road noise is annoying. But CR warned me about it. It didn't seem like it would be an issue in test driving, but it has become a greater irritation."

Anonymous, CO (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"interior noisy - steering sometimes slippy."

Anne K., MA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Being a lower trim, the ride isn't too quiet. The large windows and side mirrors are great for visibility, however they do create very noticeable road noise."

Anonymous, MI (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Noise level at highway speeds is too loud. Seat comfort on long trips is below average at best. Seats seem to be much bucket like for long travel."

Richard M., IL (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Seat stitching ripped after 35000 miles. Corrosion in a/c at 33000 miles"

Terry W., FL (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Noise is terrible..I can’t hear conversation up front when I sit in back seats"

Carl T., TX (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"The noise and ride is quite acceptable. The seats could be more supportive."

Jack S., OH (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"I’m tall, 68 years old, and regularly go to the gym, but I find the Impreza causes me discomfort on long drives, because the seat is low. It’s fun to drive though."

Anonymous, VT (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Seats in front are comfortable but to low. Road noise is very high, often drowns out phone/radio. Ride is choppy but not uncomfortable."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"At highway speeds, the road noise becomes objectionable. the tires seem to transmit a lot of that noise. I am having to replace the OE tires due to premature wear and hope the new tires quiet things down a bit."

Anonymous, MO (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Road and transmission noise is quite noticeable."

Anonymous, WA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Loud road noise"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"back seats are not comfortable."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"The comfort and ride are awesome, I especially love the visibility. Cabin noise however is awful, I need to basically have the volume at or near the highest level, especially for talk radio. Even worse if I'm trying to accelerate hard, with the rear seats down, and/or on the highway. It'd be nice if it had a lumbar support."

Cesare D., AZ (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Car is reasonably comfortable, and rides well."

Dave V., MA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Still has rattles and squeaks inside the car that are quite annoying."

Linda C., CA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Road noise is bad"

Anonymous, TX (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"This is my daughter's car. She is a rural Doctor. She can go 40 miles to her offices any day. She spends a lot of time in the car. She is also quite tall (5'10"). She is very happy with her Impreza, from Mom and Dad. We know she's safe."

Peggy T., NY (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"While the ride is a bit stiff, the car feels very stable on the road. Noise levels are fine. Seat very comfortable. I very much like how the headrests are adjustable."

Anonymous, NS (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Too much wind and road noise. Touch Screen infotainment center is too complicated and sensitive to accidental inputs. Glare of dash and vent components on drivers side window obscures side view mirror visibility."

Anonymous, ON (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"The car is noisy, the engine is underpowered, the bluetooth system is not well integrated. Ride comfort is not great. Having said that, this is a budget car but I had an Outback before and the Imprezza is clearly not as enjoyable"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Seats are very hard. Not comfortable for distance. Car is very noisy on the highway. Climate control is complicated."

Anonymous, ON (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Fan noise if high at high speed"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Wish the road noise was a bot less and wish the front seats were ventilated/air cooled"

GARRY S., UT (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"The seats are not very supportive, particularly the front passenger seat (manual)"

DAVID A., NB (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Seats could be more comfortable. Road noise could be reduced."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"The air conditioning was good in a cooler climate. It isn't as good on the really hot days in Arizona."

Anonymous, WA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"In general, I think the car is quite comfortable. I do find Subarus to be pretty noisy, however."

KATHERINE W., CO (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"I love the heated front seats."

DEBORAH R., CT (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Seats not that comfortable, ergonomics poor - does not automatically lock, speedometer small, bar-graph for fuel level while analog dial for efficency"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Seats"

Anonymous, MA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Somewhat cramped - seats are quite low. Cup holders do not accommodate cups with lids."

J T., CO (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"There has been a small rattle in dash since day one. The dealership is too far away to deal with."

RONALD W., NH (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Transmission is noisy."

Anonymous, OH (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"i find the road noise very annoying. also, i dont like the red lights on the dash when you put the lights on at night. i am unable to read with the red light on the mileage gauge. should be plain clear lights"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Car is noisier than I expected and you have to set air conditioner to max on hot days"

STEPHEN B., NC (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Noisier than I wanted."

"Noisy ride"

JAMES H., NY (2014 Subaru Impreza)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Excellent value for completely reliable transportation"

Mary M., CO (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"The longer I keep the vehicle, the less expensive it is"

David J., UT (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Subaru dependability for a fair purchase price."

J H., FL (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"I did not expect to like this vehicle so much. I bought it before the lease was up, and my buy out was over 3k below it's current value. Subarus' hold their value very well."

Jack S., OH (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Excellent value. Solid car for the money. Few frills, so most of the money went toward things that make it a better car."

Anonymous, ME (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Initial free maintenance services were great. Follow up paid maintenance services have be reasonable. I have had no mechanical problems thus far. Gas mileage is good."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Runs well, had some brake noise issues, paint is crappy. No rattles or squeaks"

Richard S., ON (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Overall, great value - excellent engine, acceleration, handling and driving ergonomics. The interior noise and road noise on highways is very bothersome."

Anonymous, OH (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"We needed an AWD car for winter driving and our 350 foot, 15% sloped driveway. The Impreza fills the bill and cost us less than $25K with plenty of options."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Quality AWD vehicle for a good price."

Art W., PA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"The car is basic, no frills/bells/whistles, but was inexpensive and has proven to be reliable (so far!)"

Anonymous, CO (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Based on our criteria: four wheel drive vehicle that is a sedan at our budget price nothing comparable. Most four wheel drive sedans are luxury or much more expensive. Also none are as reliable. Missus does not like SUVs so not an alternative!"

Leonard D., CT (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Seats that rip apart. Air conditioning corrosion at 33000 miles. Never buy a Subaru again. Rip off."

Terry W., FL (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Great AWD sedan for the price. Acceleration is good, fuel economy is good, the comfort of the front passenger is fair. They lack support for turns and do not provide a comfortable driving position for long trips. We prefer to take our Ford Focus for long trips even though the Impreza is larger. The car is noisy at highways speeds. It get great gas mileage considering it is AWD. Handling is good and inspires confidence. However, it requires more effort to drive in the mounts than say a Ford Focus. In bad weather or slippery road conditions its handling is well behaved and confident. This is my second Subaru they have been excellent reliable cars, I will probably buy another one. However, I will also keep a swell riding quiet highway car like the Ford Focus and choose between the two based on weather and road conditions."

Judd S., VA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"All wheel drive and good torque."

Paul M., PA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Impreza is a very affordable all-wheel-drive vehicle with good fuel economy and reliability. As we bought one of the least expensive versions of the car, it does not have some of the nicer trim that we enjoy on our outback. It has been a very good vehicle for our family in general, though."

Scott H., PA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Great value in a very safe car with great styling"

John G., CA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Maintenance costs are low"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Poor fuel economy, uncomfortable."

Anonymous, AL (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"safe good looking reliable vehicle that holds its value"

Linda S., NY (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Price is comparable to any small 5-door vehicles , yet it is equipped with permanent 4-wheel drive, a straight mounted engine, all make it secure and safe on the road."

Elton W., NJ (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Good value for money; reliable; easy to park"

Anonymous, ON (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Reliable, competent in all areas, all wheel drive -- all for about $20K."

Jonathan P., OR (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"This is the second Subaru that we have owned and believe it is probably the best value for dollar on the road. The AWD actually feels like it is hugging the road and you do not have issues with any part of the car."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Very impressive vehicle for the money. Handling, ride comfort and space are very good for the low cost of vehicle."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"My primary motive for buying an Impreza was to have a small but reliable car that gets good mileage. The other factors such as style are not important to me. I love the Impreza because it's exactly what I was looking for and I trust Subaru to produce a quality vehicle."

Naveen U., OH (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"All wheel drive, reliable, economical, safe, fun to drive and affordable...very few cars offer that combination."

BRIAN F., CA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"This car has given us reliability like no other car. It's great on gas, comfortable ! Also, the trade in value is the highest I've ever had! I'm extremely satisfied and would definitely buy a Subaru again."

DAHNE R., FL (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"reasonable car with no problems"

RIMON R., NY (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Subarus are always worth their price"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Best price for an AWD Vehicle"

STEWART G., CO (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"mileage for an all wheel car, roomy"

WALTER S., CT (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"The 2014 Subaru Imprezza cost $21,000 and has delivered a dependable car and solid automobile value for the price."

JOSEPH M., NH (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"The car does not come close to the advertised mileage, which was one reason I chose this over the Forrester, Mistake."

PAUL K., CA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"Outside the new Imprezas are ok. The interior however is clean, uncrowded, uncomplicated. No flashy electronics. In fact the straightforward unpretentious interior and dash is one of the car's strong points."

RICHARD C., PA (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Looks, style"

WALTER S., CT (2014 Subaru Impreza)

"Looks way more sporty than it actually is."

CESARE D., AZ (2014 Subaru Impreza)
