Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"Very satisfied with the adaptive speed control after I found and set the acceleration parameters to economy. I felt the acceleration was more jack-rabbit like in the normal setting. There are 5 settings available, so if economy is too sluggish for others, there are 4 more to choose from."

Bob G., IL (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Excellent handling. Very low profile so you feel like you're part of the road. Acceleration is decent for such good fuel economy."

T S., GA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"All wheel drive is perfect for our mountain road."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"GOOD: decent acceleration, comfort FAIR: Handling, MPG BAD: CVT - poor substitute for real auto, not as much fun as manual"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Handles great, much more acceleration than other similar cars."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"reasonable good"

K D., CO (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"The transmission has a little trick of feeling like it's hesitating, though I've been told by Subaru that this is due to the engine trying to improve mileage. It accelerates very well. Easy to get on the freeway."

Anonymous, GA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"The all wheel drive system provides a smooth ride."

Anonymous, SC (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"engine jerks when slowing down, if the AC is operating."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"It is lively and quick"

George S., CA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"The Eyesight system and smart cruise control add great safety features"

Steven S., CT (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"handles well in all types of weather; slow pickup at low from stop (4cyl)"

Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"The 2017 Subaru Impreza is great to drive; acceleration and handling is very smooth. Even the back seat provides a comfortable ride."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"At my age, safety features that protect me if I begin to get sleepy."

Anonymous, WA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"vehicle handles well, but acceleration is slow and uneven. "Geared" CVT programming makes accelerating from a stop choppy and uneven. It starts out smooth then seems to cut out, requiring and additional push of the accelerator to continue to move"

Anonymous, OH (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"CVT takes a little getting used to"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Before we bought the Impreza Sport we read reviews that were quite negative about the pickup provided by the engine/transmission combo provided. Once we owned and drove the 2017 Sport we found that the reviews were bogus. The Sport is fun to drive esp. with all wheel drive."

Steven B., OR (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Although this does not have as much pep as my 2013 Subaru Outback, I still love using the paddles to avoid braking."

Pat S., NH (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Very pleased with the acceleration and throttle response. Very happy with the steering response. It has responsive "turn-in". Excellent brakes. Very sports car like handling which makes me smile. I like the manual shift option and the automatic is much more responsive than any I have ever driven before. It accelerates well especially for a 2 liter heavy(ish) sedan."

Dan L., CA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Handling is comfortable and enjoyable very adequate power"

Gene Y., CO (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"At first the car had little power to accelerate on the mountain highways I live off. After around 4,000 miles, it changed and now it easily goes any speed. There seemed to be a break in period."

Madeleine B., CO (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Ground clearance is too low"

Anonymous, MT (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Handles well but acceleration is just adequate. In most situations lack of power isn't noticed."

John P., AL (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"It accelerates really well, and is very responsive. With my trim level I have the 18" wheels, and they handle bumpy pavement well. I greatly appreciated the quick response of the braking system when a truck unexpectedly turned left across my lane of traffic, and I was able to stop the car without hitting the truck."

Mary H., CA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Pretty peppy. Never had troubling accelerating when I needed it for passing or to get to speed on the freeway."

Frank C., WA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"The acceleration is instantaneous with the continuous automatic transmission (CVT). I easily keep up with the heavy traffic in my area. Handling is first rate, even compared to pure sports cars. The only negative is the turning circle, which ideally could be smaller."

Anonymous, MD (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Clearance way too low, and ac is weak and lousy gas mileage, much lower than advertised"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"During acceleration the car sometimes lurches. It seems unsmooth during transition to acceleration."

Anonymous, HI (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"We live in Montana. It excels in winter driving conditions."

Anonymous, MT (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Pretty gutless, waiting for WRX power. Handling and ride are excellent."

Roger C., ON (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Handles very sporty. Absorbs road bumps well. Acceleration feels more sporty than the numbers suggest."

Paul B., CA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"adaptive cruise control"

Joseph F., VT (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"love the acceleration and especially the flat cornering really solid in the curves,, The power is in keeping with what the car is. Not a super car for sure but gets out of its own way and for a small 4 cylinder it is quite adequate."

Allan S., OR (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"very easy to handle and I like the all wheel drive"

Anonymous, NE (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"It handles well and accelerates pretty good, the CVT is a little cumbersome. For the quality of a Subaru it would be nice to have a little more hp."

Anonymous, OR (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"This is a non-turbo four cylinder car with a CVT, with that consideration it does pretty well."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"The acceleration lags a little bit while going from low speeds to higher speeds, but the handling of the car is very good. It does well on the highway and changes speeds easily on the highway."

Evan G., IL (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Handling is very stable."

David B., OH (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"The transmission can shift hard at the lower mph range when first starting and when stuck in traffic."

Anonymous, MD (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Good acceleration and braking. Great handling and visibility. Road noise seat comfort are barely ok."

Thomas N., OR (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"While the sport trim has excellent handling, especially cornering and general agility, the engine feels a little underpowered for the weight."

Michael G., CT (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Responsive and agile. I feel in control of the car without any lag time or sloshing around"

Kristin M., MN (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"the acceleration is more than adequate for city driving and the steering is precise, making parallel parking easy."

Anonymous, ON (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"It handles fine and is good in inclement weather. What the car lacks for me is any sense of driving fun and satisfaction. It's simply basic transportation and nothing else. The passenger outside mirror will not adjust far enough out for my preferred viewing angle. For a car that brags on a reputation for extreme safety, the lack of auto-locking doors is both annoying and unsafe!"

Anonymous, KS (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Good road grip"

Anonymous, MA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Very smooth and rapid acceleration with excellent cornering. It is fun to drive and hugs the road well."

Anonymous, ON (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"acceleration not smooth hesitation when accelerating especially at low speeds"

Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Accelerates and handles very well. The CVT is well tuned and responsive, much better tuned than the CVT in my 2014 Forester."

Anonymous, ON (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Really fun to drive."

Matthew M., HI (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Somewhat under-powered. Brakes are excellent. Overall handling is very good."

Mike V., OR (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Acceleration of the Impreza is adequate for its class; not great, not bad. Handling, though, is fantastic. This car can take corners and maneuvers like a champ."

Justin G., PA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"steering wheel vibrates and hard to handle at high speeds"

Anonymous, MA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Handling is very good with acceptable understeer. Acceleration is mediocre from a standstill, but much better when moving at speed."

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"The Impreza is very responsive. It handles well in all weather conditions. I live in the Northeast where we experienced significant snowfall during the 2017/18 winter.. I had no trouble navigating. The car accelerates quickly without hesitation."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"My Impreza Sport 5 door handles better in corners I expected. Very flat and tracks well. Power is adequate for 95% of driving. Would prefer about 25 more horsepower."

Samuel N., KY (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"weak acceleration. Simulated transmission shifts of the cvt take away power during normal driving. Car seems underpowered. Ride and handling are excellent"

Tom W., KS (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Always good gas peddle power response. Feeling of safety while braking. Very secure feel to steering and handling. Easy to park. Great new sound and light features for all driving operations."

George P., NH (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"It is very responsive and fun to drive."

Anonymous, ON (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Acceleration and handling are outstanding."

Anonymous, NC (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Handling is confident if not sporty. Feels very secure in wet weather. Acceleration is slow from stand still or when merging onto interstate. However once it gets up to speed then the engine performs well."

Chris S., FL (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"The handling is incredible, especially when you consider how comfortable the ride is. Acceleration is perfectly acceptable for this class of car."

Mark R., OR (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Handling is very responsive and the car generally feels secure. Acceleration is very adequate for situations such as merging onto a freeway or interstate."

Howard W., MN (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Very fun to drive despite a slightly sluggish response."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Terrible acceleration, especially on hills - makes highway on ramps scary, and passing on country roads iffy."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Acceleration is barely adequate. Car handles well but steering is too sensitive at highway speeds."

Demosthenes P., CA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"The acceleration is nothing to write home about, but the handling is very good in my opinion for a small car. While the acceleration is not the best, it reflects the good gas mileage that i experience with the car."

Anonymous, LA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Acceleration is somewhat lackluster from a stop, until about 30 mph, then it improves.."

David F., NJ (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"It is not quick. Very sluggish"

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Handles fantastic, glued to the road."

Eric-Kenzie B., WA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"handling"

Anonymous, NH (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Handling is solid, planted. Acceleration is more than adequate. Paddle shifters are useful at times. Eyesight system is great--use adaptive cruise and lane-keeping assist all the time on highway."

Nicholas L., CA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Acceleration is substandard at time, but the car handles exceptionally. Spirited driving on curvy, winding road is extremely fun, even with the lack of power."

Anonymous, DE (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Car is great under 70MPH. Above that it is almost dangerous. It wanders all over the road. You can't turn your head or it will change lanes."

Anonymous, TN (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"handles very well in all kinds of conditions...especially noteworthy on winding country roads."

Anonymous, IA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"The car rides and handles superbly, and the transmission is even good for a CVT. What really lets the car down is the lack of power; this car with just the little extra oomph of Subaru's 2.5L would be perfect"

Thomas B., WI (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Living in an area where we have to drive up three separate hills to get home, the Impreza with its CVT effortlessly climbed them with no indication of any strain. The CVT shifts smoothly and imperceptibly and acceleration is more than adequate, although I wouldn't bet the pink slip on it."

Timothy C., NY (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"I love all the features of the EyeSight driver assist technology."

W W., CO (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"This is the Spot trim. Doing it over, we would choose the luxury trim as the seats and suspension are too stiff."

Richard H., WA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"First, acceleration is not scintillating. But the handling is exceptional. The car always feel planted to the ground, turning to exactly where you aim. It is a stiffer ride than other competitors, but not harsh, and always compliant. That sure-footedness counteracts the stiffness to be a very smooth ride (though that may seem contradictory). Just fantastic driving even if it could definitely use a little more power. And the CVT is great; do not avoid (even if the paddle shifters are a head scrat..."

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The seats are very comfortable. I've enjoyed taking it on road trips. The noise level is rather high on the freeway, so I have to turn up the volume to hear music. I wish it were quieter."

Anonymous, GA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"The seats could use a bit more padding."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Ride seems bumpier."

Anonymous, CO (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"The seating is neither comfortable nor is it uncomfortable, but it would probably be uncomfortable after an extended time. I have not taken a trip of any length since the car was purchased new."

Anonymous, LA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"No lumbar support. Seat not comfortable for driver with sciatica issues."

Katharine Z., VA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Generally very comfortable for someone who is tall (I'm 6'4"). And relatively quiet, compared to earlier Subaru models I've owned."

Frank C., WA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Seating comfortable. Road noise makes cabin loud, especially on noisy surfaces."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"I agree with CU drive evaluation - seats do not provide much side support and are not all that comfortable"

George S., CA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Quieter than my other vehicles. Very comfortable seats and ride. Takes bumps well. Easy to enter and exit."

Anonymous, ON (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Seats are somewhat uncomfortable Ride is fairly comfortable Noise level is quiet on good road surfaces but on worn highways it is a little noisey"

Gene Y., CO (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Great car to get in and out of with cloth seats, very comfortable ride, handy hatchback, great on fuel"

Anna M., ON (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"I have the hatchback, which I often need to carry loads. When the rear seats are folded down to expand the cargo space, they do not lie flat (like my old Toyota Matrix did). There is an annoying ridge which limits how I can slide in boxes etc. I didn't lay the seats down before I bought it -- don't know if it would have made a difference in my purchase but it can't be that hard to design a FLAT cargo space."

Elizabeth A., TX (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Heated seats."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Ride is great. Engine/exhaust are noisy at low speeds."

Demosthenes P., CA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"road noise is too high"

Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Very quiet ride, comfortable over rough roads. However, seat adjustments are few and the seats tend to hurt my back after extended driving. No lumbar adjustments on seats."

Chris S., FL (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"I would like to see better lumbar support on drivers seat. I think it could be better. I would also like to see a lumbar support adjusting lever. It could a manual adjustment and a power adjustment in the higher trim models."

Patricia O., MA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Seats have great support and seem to “wrap around me‿"

Anonymous, SC (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Seats are very comfortable. I drive 50 minutes to work. The ride is smooth due to all wheel drive and is fun to drive."

Anonymous, SC (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"For an entry level car, it is fairly comfortable, although I am of average size and I'm not sure a larger person would agree. The thing that is most disappointing about the vehicle is the very basic heating and AC system. The vents are small and difficult to get just right. It truly could have come off a vehicle from 2002."

Anonymous, NV (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"For a small car, it is a very comfortable and reasonably quiet ride. I am very pleased with this."

Evan G., IL (2017 Subaru Impreza)

Joseph H., AB (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"The ride is incredible, so quiet and comfortable. This car is the most pleasant to drive of any car I have driven."

Mark R., OR (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Not impressed with quality of interior materials, some parts seem fairly cheap and flimsy and short of quality that I come to expect from Subaru. Wish seats had better lumbar support and have noticed some slight fitment issues with interior materials along with rattles due to poor manufacturing process."

Joseph H., UT (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Front seats have good support."

Steven B., OR (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Seats should be more supportive. Noise is at the expected level. The ride is smoother than the 2013 Impreza Base sedan I had but still a little rough."

Anonymous, NH (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"The back seat windows whistle and let in road noise. The seat cushions are stiff, but I was not uncomfortable driving 8 hours/day on a recent cross country trip."

Carolyn S., NJ (2017 Subaru Impreza)

Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Relatively good value for what I paid. The car handles corners nicely, is quiet and has good braking. In addition, the Eyesight features are top notch for sure...adaptive cruise control, rear backup camera and lane assist all work really well. The downside - extremely thin paint...the car is easily scratched...and I mean easily scratched. The The car can be a bit sluggish at times with the Constant Velocity Transmission attempting to find the right gear. From a driveability standpoint, the CVT needs some work."

"My Impreza came with a lot of standard features at the premium trim level. It gets very good gas mileage. I feel very safe when driving because I have the EyeSight safety system which works flawlessly."

Patricia O., MA (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Good gas mileage, reactive cruise control, backup camera and rear side warning alerts, 8 inch display screen, front collision warning, cargo area with rear seats up or flat, great visibility, great handling. Only negatives road noise and car very low ground clearance."

Thomas N., OR (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"Didn't pay attention when i purchased vehicle and it wasn't til I got home when I realized vehicle had no CD player in audio system. Went back to the dealer to request a swap out to a system that contained a CD player. Was told I couldn't do this because the upgraded audio system was only compatible with the more expensive class of vehicle (which would have raised my purchase price approx $6000 due to the additional add ons and the upgraded CD player). So I went to a local audio shop and had an after market unit put in that does everything the original equipment did. Cost... $250.00"

Robert G., ME (2017 Subaru Impreza)

"The "EYESIGHT" system is fantastic! It has already averted a few near-miss accidents for me. And for the first time in my life, when driving, I feel like my car is on my side, not a xxxxx trap waiting to crash. For me, driving is an experience of cognitive overload. There is more going on around me than I can possibly keep track of. Accidents lurk everywhere. With the EYESIGHT system, the car picks up some of the burden for me--particularly watching the adjacent lanes, where everyone has difficulty, and I have extra difficulty due to limited neck mobility. It's an enormous relief having this. I will never again buy a car that doesn't have a system like this."

"The 2017 Subaru Impreza is serving our family well. It is easy to drive and does well in snow, ice and mud. I do wish it had more ground clearance, and I wish Subaru made a dog barrier for the hatchback."

"For the cost, the car has features like all-wheel drive, not available on Toyota Corolla which I've owned. It is also quieter and controls bumpy roads better than my previous 2014 Corolla. With 40k+ miles and no repairs so far, its value for the price improves daily."

"The 2017 Subaru Impreza Sport has a surprising amount of interior space including leg room. Its engine and CVT to transmission provides a responsive driving experience for a most reasonable price."
