Redesigned for 2005, the Legacy GT combined a powerful turbocharged engine with sports-car agility and a comfortable ride. It's among the sportiest and most fun-to-drive in its class. The interior is quiet and hospitable. Fuel economy, however, is a paltry 18 mpg. The Legacy also has a disconcerting tendency to slide its rear end if the driver goes too fast into a corner and suddenly lifts off the accelerator.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"corners very well; great turning radius"

Anonymous, VT (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"Car has a sport suspension, which gives it great handling for a wagon. Acceleration is certainly very adequate with great mileage."

RONALD D., WA (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"This is the turbo-charged model. VERY powerful and responsive, but the clutch is very quick to grab, and can stall the car when moving from a stop"

Anonymous, TX (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"automatic gear changes are sluggish when driving uphill."

DAVID V., WV (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"Turbo is fast-responding, ideal for passing tractor trailers on mountain roads. AWD is very responsive on handing; we always come out of curves having gained on the nearest cars. Around home we use only Plus grade gasoline but on road trips use Super for the turbo."

ERIC N., MD (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"Turbo-charged engine provides excellent acceleration."

DAVID V., UT (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"Smooth ride and handling, comfortable, plenty of power but could use more low-end torque. Very good traction in snow."

Anonymous, ON (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"Vehicle transmission was replaced at a dealer with a rebuilt. It does not shift smoothly and lacks power for passing / acceleration."

Anonymous, CT (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"Even after 12 years it drives like a competent sports car."

Anonymous, WV (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"handling on snow and ice...excellent"

Anonymous, BC (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"just great no complaints"

Anonymous, BC (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"Handling is pretty good for what it is."

Jeff G., CA (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"This is an excellent road car, even at 12 years of age. Road feel at the wheel is better than that of the 2016 Outback (which is still pretty good). Quick steering and plenty of power (turbo version) add to the pleasure. Only downside: it has more road noise than the Outback."

Anonymous, RI (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"All-wheel drive all of the time especially in the winter Acceleration not bad for 2.5 L engine."

Anonymous, ON (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"It is 12 years old and it still accelerates and handles like new."

Judson C., WV (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"Car is fun to drive with the standard transmission everywhere but in the mountains where it only creeps up mountain passes."

Anonymous, WI (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"Fun to drive, glued to the road."

Michael B., AR (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"It is a Turbo and excelerates quite well in both city and highway driving."

Laurence N., CO (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"Pulls hard and handles well over a long lifespan"

Richard E., CT (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"handles very well on winding roads"

Anonymous, VT (2005 Subaru Legacy)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The car has roadster suspension, unlike the Outback, and is comfortable with great handling that makes passengers comfortable. Leather seats stand up well after 11 years. A/C does excellent job of keeping windshield clear in rain."

ERIC N., MD (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"Climate control is probably the cars weakest point. AC is mediocre and defogging is always a problem."

BRAD S., OR (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"The seats are not leather, and are manual. They are "lumpy" to sit on. The ride is bumpy."

Anonymous, ME (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"Reasonably comfortable; a bit noisy."

Anonymous, ON (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"just great no complents"

Anonymous, BC (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"I think the seats are a little low. Bad knees."

Anonymous, IL (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"Can only sit in seats for about one hour, not comfortable!"

Michael B., AR (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"Very comfortable seats."

Susan B., CA (2005 Subaru Legacy)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Car is dependable, gets good gas mileage and causes me no trouble!!!!!!!!!!!"

M C., AZ (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"Vehicle has been relatively trouble free considering that it is now ten years old other than I did not expect to have to replace ball-joints and front-wheel linkages at the 60,000 mile point. Holes developed in the rubberized boots protecting critical components, but because of labor costs, it makes more economic sense to replace whole assemblies that just the boots covering the joints."

Anonymous, CA (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"It annoys me that I am restricted to Subaru only manufactured parts. That there are no after-market parts available. It leads me to believe there I am paying a higher price relative to other similar cars on the market. Every maintenance and repair issue is extremely expensive - more than necessary, in my experience."

KAREN J., TX (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"The car is cheap to run. $50 a year for survice. It does not break down."

Anonymous, CA (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"i HAVE OWNED MANY CARS IN MY LIFETIME AND MY 2005 SUBARU LEGACY WAGON IS BY FAR THE MOST DEPENDABLE AND COST EFFECTIVE VEHICLE ON THE MARKET."

Anonymous, QC (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"Best driving car I've ever driven."

Anonymous, MN (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"Only negative about this car is poor mileage."

COURTNEY N., ME (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"Great value for a turbocharged sedan, fun to drive at that price point"

Richard E., CT (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"Fragile car. Many problems that I have never experienced with other cars. Always serviced by dealers who don't appear to know that much about the car. I will never purchase another Subaru."

Anonymous, NC (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"It 12 yrs, old and still running good. What more can I ask for."

Anonymous, MA (2005 Subaru Legacy)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"People has told me how good the car looks."

M C., AZ (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"THE 2005 SUBARU LEGACY WAGON WAS THE BEST STYLING DESIGN SUBARU HAS PUT OUT. IT WAS DISAPPOINTING THAT THEY DISCONTINUED SELLING THE LEGACY WAGON IN NORTH AMERICA IN 2010."

Anonymous, QC (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"The small wagon is a wonderful compromise between good looks, small size, but room for cargo. We're disappointed that Subaru no longer makes a wagon this size."

N C., CA (2005 Subaru Legacy)

"This is the best-looking car of any type that Subaru has ever built"
