This iteration of the Subaru Legacy scores among the top tier of family sedans and offers standard all-wheel drive. It is significantly roomier and quieter than the previous model and has impressive ride comfort and responsive handling. Even with all-wheel-drive, the fuel economy is impressive, thanks to its continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"The suspension has held up very poorly over time. The car gets extremely unsettled very easily over any sort of broken pavement. When driving in a straight line in the 30-50mph range, it's very easy to feel the car get disconnected from the road over expension joints, small potholes, etc. You might expect this when cornering - but it happens very easily at mid-range speed in a straight line. My sister drives a 2002 Camry with 160k+ miles on it, and its suspension has held up a lot better than th"

"Poor acceleration"

Anonymous, OH (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"The Legacy 3.6 engine is very peppy' I have driven Subaru's for many years. This is the second 6 I have had from Subaru. My only complaint is the Legacy is a little noisy when driving on the freeway."

ROBERT P., MI (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Excellent in snow and ice."

ELROY S., WA (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"We got the 4-cylinder because we didn't have a need for 6. Unfortunately, there is no power at the low end--i.e. backing out of a parking space, etc. You really have to gun it to get the vehicle to move, which can be scary if you're in a tight spot or there are people nearby. Road noise is also quite high. The AC/heater fan is very loud when on."

Anonymous, NY (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Could have a bit more power. Handling is secure but not precise."

BRIAN M., OH (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"My wife loves it. I don't. It revs up too much when you hit the accelerator-- like it's working too hard. I suppose it's the all wheel drive but I don't like the resistance I feel when I drive it."

LINDA T., MN (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"terrific in snow"

CHARLES B., ME (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"The handling at higher speeds should be improved via a stabilizer bar. The point of the 3.6R is the 6-cylinder engine so improving the handling at higher speeds would be ideal. The response on the pedal could be improved as well...there is a little hesitation before the car actually takes off."

GISELLE J., MD (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"I love how the car handles and how comfortable it is to drive."

ROBERT G., WY (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"It's a very solidly built car, and seems very safe. Some of the details are not good. The rear view window is small, and the seat rests block the view even more when backing up. I'm a good parallel parker usually, but this car is awkward and hard to see around, even for my husband who is tall. The transmission senor (something to do with emissions) malfunctioned, and a new one would be $7000 to replace with only one year warrantee. That's insane! We got a used one, but still very expensiv"

"I will buy another. Great comfort, drivability, economy and longevity. I love this car."

WALTER B., PA (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"The car has always had a bad habit of sometimes jerking when I've slowed down a lot and then give it a little gas."

Anonymous, MD (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Drives much better than my 2006 Legacy"

MARC R., MA (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Too much road noise--Fair excelleration"

MICHAEL S., MA (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Acceleration with the CVT is outstanding since there are no gears to shift. This gives me the power I need to pass traffic."

M P., OH (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Lots of power, good handling, louder engine noise than Camry"

Anonymous, ON (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Acceleration is slow, takes a while to get going such as approaching on ramp to highway"

Anonymous, NH (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Great on snow, but could have a little more power"

Harald A., PA (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"It's peppy enough and handles well."

Anonymous, NY (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Good acceleration to get onto the freeway"

Lisa B., WA (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Go any where in bad weather. The AWD is safer on dry roads as well. excellent gas mileage and good resale value. Very dependable."

James C., NJ (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Good value Loud acceleration Feels resisting e at coasting yet good gas mileage Comfortable seats"

Linda T., MN (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Quick response time, good acceleration time, makes turns very strong and confidently"

Anonymous, OH (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"The car drives well."

Thomas Z., CO (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Even with the smaller (4 cylinder) engine, because of the CVT, there's plenty of acceleration for reasonable (mature) drivers. Best car ever for going where I point it. Just the right amount of steering feedback."

George K., NC (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Acceleration could be better"

Gerry Z., NH (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"I find the acceleration adequate when entering highways, particularly on short entrance ramps which are abundant in my area. The handling ability has saved me a few times when encountering surprise road obstacles,"

Anonymous, CT (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Nice power for a 4 cylinder engine, and great control of vehicle."

Anonymous, WI (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"It has 6 cyl. as merging onto high speed highways is important. Very responsive, sporty pick-up. Great summer or winter car in northern climate."

Julie T., MN (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Love the all time 4wd. Excellent ride and handling."

Mary H., NY (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Not hte fastest, but more than enough acceleration when needed. Handles well"

Anonymous, OH (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"I've got the 2.5p vertion of this car. Why did CR not have that as a choice? I inherented this car I've had it about 2 years now. I have tried and tried to like the CVT trans. I looking into trading it now."

Anonymous, VA (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Corners very well"

Tom G., WI (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"The newer CVT transmissions deliver more power and this Subaru is by far the quickest and most powerful one I have ever owned."

Michael P., OH (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"I purchased the 6 cylinder Legacy. Excellent acceleration and handling."

Hugh F., ON (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Dependable, steady, comfortable. I use it for all my long road trips."

Michael G., PA (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"The all-wheel drive allows the car to handle very well in icy/slippery conditions. However, the low ground clearance does not allow it to do well in deep snow."

Anonymous, NY (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Great hanfling"

Jakub M., NJ (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Given the size of the engine I am still impressed with my ability to accelerate in highway driving. With the CVT you can just bring it up to speed, ease off on the gas and it maintains speed. This makes it good on mileage for an older car. On the highway I'm getting around 34mpg, in town around 24mpg. I also feel the 4 wheel drive difference in snow and rain - handles very well."

Anonymous, NJ (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"My biggest beef is how low it is to the ground. I bottom out on parking blocks. Should have got the Outback."

Raymond B., CA (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"This is a $40k sporty sedan posing as a $25k family car. It handles well (AWD) and the 2.5 x 4 cylinder engine is quite powerful. This is my wife's car - with a CVT transmission - so I only drive it occasionally, but when I do the real problem is not going too fast (quiet and smooth running)."

Michael Q., NV (2011 Subaru Legacy)

".the four wheel drive is fantastic on any road surface. Be it wet, dry, slippery or rough. Why buy a 1/2 traction vehicle when you can have a full traction vehicle for the same or less money?"

James C., NJ (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"smooth and powerful"

Ira Z., NJ (2011 Subaru Legacy)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"car feels heavy (as in solid) in its build and ride, and feels as tight as the day we bought it. rides like a big buick."

CHUCK W., NJ (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Not enough support for long trips, but I don't use it for long trips even though it gets really good mileage (33+) on the highway."

VINCENT J., NY (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Very comfortable for long trips"

Anonymous, CA (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Like it all except it would be useful to have a cup holder at hand to my left hand when I'm driving (I hung one in the exhaust grill); and also a fan in the back seat."

Anonymous, MN (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Road noise is prohibitively loud"

KENAN A., VA (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"I am short and find it difficult to see the parameters of the car when backing up, or pulling into a space. I can't tell where the end of the car is. I think the design of all new cars makes this difficult which is why newer cars now have back up cameras that they can charge us more money for rather than design a car you can see out of."

Anonymous, NY (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"This model (Legacy) is probably the roomiest sedan in its class. Lots of legroom for passengers in the back. I would have preferred a split climate control system, which I intend to buy next year on a Legacy Sport, because I'm always hot and my wife is always cold. She has to shut her vents to stay warmer. There are some rattles that have recently developed that I can't pinpoint, but that's probably due the poor road maintenance and potholes in our area. Overall it's not a bad ride for a 6 year"

Anonymous, NY (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"The seats are somewhat comfortable, but I have found others cars to be better"

Anonymous, ON (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"seats could be more comfortable"

WILLIAM R., PA (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Seats need better support and less back strain. Could be improved to allow for more height especially at the back [angle is too low for my comfort]."

Anonymous, CT (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Seats very comfortable, road noise minimal."

CHRISTOPHER Q., NJ (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Seats aren't as comfortable as when newer; window seals aren't as tight as before, thus increasing road noise."

Brian K., WA (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"The seats are quite comfortable, but the street sounds are noticeable."

Kathy C., CA (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"comfortable leather seats. plenty of leg room. quiet ride"

Robert R., NY (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Lot's of head room for getting in and out. Good leg room too. Great for tall people. Comfortable seats. We were replacing a Volvo S80 so we were already spoiled with comfort. We take long car trips and comfort is very important. The car is a bit noisy but all other good features trump this negative. Ride is comfortable e v enjoying on long trips."

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Our 2011 Suburu Legacy is now 5 years old and is still working as well as when we bought it. We expect to still have it when our 5 year old grand daughter learns to drive in 10 years."

PAUL T., TX (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Do your homework! There are many dealers who want to sell you a car. The value you get for your money depends on how much you paid for the car in the first place. I was lucky to buy this one as an "Internet Sale," and the dealer gave me $2000 right off the top."

Thomas H., NJ (2011 Subaru Legacy)

Kathy C., CA (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Very capable, good ride, efficient"

Gerry Z., NH (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Nice handling in snow and slick road as well as al driving trips. The stock radio is terrible.. no bass control , way to much base."

Anonymous, WI (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"This car rides too low, bottoming out in even the shallowest dip in the road, at low curbs, or at concrete parking lot stops. The front right quarter panel comes loose frequently; it is not attached well. When I spoke to the local dealership's body shop associate, he sort of shrugged it off as too expensive to fix, especially since it would simply do it again. I consider it to be a potentially lethal design flaw. If the quarter panel were to fall off while I was driving, it could be very dangerous. (I'm sorry that my issue doesn't fit your questions well. I don't know if it is a problem with the suspension or simply poor engineering. In any event, I hope to replace the car asap.)"

"No other car in class has standard all wheel drive and can compare in price. Excellent customer service from Subaru"

Mark H., MD (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"We love our Subaru Legacy! It has been trouble-free. We get the benefit of all wheel drive and still get great gas mileage in a family size car. With a low center of gravity, I prefer it compared to a SUV."

Bill P., MN (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"well equipped, repair costs are reasonable if you avoid the dealer"

Anonymous, CT (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"I have purchased all my cars from Wagner Subaru in Fairborn, OH and all I asked them was to beat the online pricing I would get from USAA Car Buying Services. They beat that price by at least 1.5%, so I was very satisfied. Overall, Subaru's provide more capability and longer durability than other comparable carts for the price making them a better value proposition."

Michael P., OH (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"As a member of IMBA, I am eligible for Subaru VIP pricing. This has made my Subaru's much more affordable than otherwise and is one of the reasons I choose Subaru when looking for a new car."

Anonymous, MI (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"I've owned many cars over the past 52 years and the 2011 Legacy may be the best of all of them. Given flawless performance over the years, it is probably worth more than I paid for it because of so few problems."

Michael G., PA (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Good solid car, only minor issues that needed repair in the last 7 years. I expect to drive this car for at least ten years, thereby not having a car payment for a good 5 years."

Joseph B., DE (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Subarus are very safe, well engineered, go anywhere in inclement weather. Inexpensive to maintain, hardly ever a problem. "Why buy a 1/2 traction vehicle when I can get a full traction car for the same money?"

James C., NJ (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Attractive, sporty car with great pick-up in the 6 cyl. along with leather interior, electric seats, seat heaters, great sound system, excellent winter handling, trouble-free ownership for price point under $30k. No surprises! Routine maintenance and remains attractive and dependable."

Julie T., MN (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"Little to no repair costs"

Linda T., MN (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"all wheel drive, upgraded stereo, moon-roof etc for less than 27K at the time"

Robert R., NY (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"For the price, it includes all wheel drive, a fast 6 cylinder motor and most of the comfort and convenience options that I want. On the other hand, I had to spend $2000 on the suspension this year."

"In my 50+ years of driving, it is the best, most reliable car I've ever had. I've never had a single repair other than worn out brakes, so when driving alone in remote areas, I'm confident it will not break down. I drive a lot in the snowy, mountainous areas of upstate New York, and I've never gotten stuck."

"I paid more for my 2013 Impreza than I did for my 2011 Legacy and there are far more accoutrements than the Impreza. Power driver's seat, superior sound system, spacious seating, less road noise."

Anonymous, NY (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"We like the all wheel drive aspect of the car, especially in the winter."

Richard B., IL (2011 Subaru Legacy)

"You can't beat the value of a Subaru! At the time I purchased my Legacy it was near top of the line and at least $15,000 less than other cars I was considering. I have noticed their pricing has gone up since 2011, but you still get more bang for your buck. When I purchased I was able to pick individual features I wanted and not get stuck paying for packages I did not want. It's a 6 year old car and the dealer would still pay me about half of what I purchased it for if I wanted to sell - which I..."
