Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for about 420,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2019 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2012 Subaru Legacy owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Exterior lights (other than headlights)

"It seems that I have to replace the lights more frequently than in other cars. The first month I had to have a parking light replaced by the dealer. Shortly after, (I believe it was the same light), I replaced it again and brought it to the attention of one of the staff when checking in for a routine oil change; he tried to tell me it was because of mileage. Needless to say, I didn't trust anything he said after that. Anyway, I'd say that I've replaced each parking light twice since I've had the car & I've also had to replace the headlights. What a pain!"

Drew N., MT (2012 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I have had to replace headlights three times since purchasing the vehicle new in 2012. This seems excessive. I found online that this is a recognized problem with headlights for vehicles manufactured during a certain time frame, and Subaru is extending the warranty for those vehicles and will replace the headlights at no cost for ten years. My car is not included in those eligible for the program. Subaru customer service did send me a $100 coupon as a gesture of good will, which I appreciated, a"

"Frequently replacing left headlight"

Elizabeth K., PA (2012 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Our low beam headlights have prematurely burnt out. More than the bulbs being fairly expensive, replacing them is very tedious if done independently or expensive if done via a mechanic. I have come to understand Subaru has a known problem with the automatic headlight setting... it causes a surge which burns out the bulbs. To my knowledge, Subaru has not offered a fix to date"

Eric S., PA (2012 Subaru Legacy 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Noise from front suspension occurred whenever car went over bumps"

Bob A., TN (2012 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I love my car, but it is the squeakiest car I've owned. The problem seems to be in the interior, with the seats and dashboard and window areas frequently making noises when shifting in the seat or on rough roads. I think that the driver's seat height changes slowly, as well, I can start with it in a fairly high position and a few weeks later it's lower, and I'll have to raise it up again"

"Misc check engine light"

B S., WA (2012 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The check engine light will periodically come on for no apparent reason. There is no loss of power, performance, or fuel economy. The code is P0353. The local Subaru dealer can't diagnose the issue as it's an intermittent problem. The check engine light will go out after a period of time without any intervention on my part. It has been to the dealer at least three times for the same issue. This problem wouldn't be as annoying if Subaru wouldn't have several other lights flash when the check engine line comes on. The local dealer tells me this is Subaru's way of letting the driver know there is a problem that needs to be taken care of. As part of this notification system, cruise control will not function when the check engine light is on."
