At first blush, the Subaru Legacy is a great all-around sedan, thanks to its standard all-wheel drive and affordability. Dig a bit deeper and you'll realize that's selling the Legacy short. This is a car with very few compromises, effectively blending an excellent ride, responsive handling, a roomy and quiet interior, great visibility, simple controls and easy cabin access front and rear.

Jo S., NY (2015 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"When I start the car I want the radio to return to the station I was last listening, if I listen to adult content Suburu overrides my choice as a family friendly design. I do not appreciate the car decided what and when I can listen. Provide a family friendly setting, but allow me to turn it off. Separately, I want to drive at all hours with my headlights on, but the in-dash entertainment center is not readable in sunlight when the headlights are on. A big failure for a manufacturer that mostly gets safety right."

Charlotte B., IL (2015 Subaru Legacy 3.6R 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

John C., NV (2015 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The noise comes and goes. It is difficult to explain. When we take it in for service it doesn't make the noise."

John B., CT (2015 Subaru Legacy 3.6R 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"The car I drove to test drive was not the car I leased. The latter is super noisy. Have taken it back multiple times and there is nothing they can do...it's in the design? I will not be keeping it. Paint is coming up from tailgate area. Front window had to be replaced as well as tire and car taken in twice because exhaust light went off"

"Passenger side window had wind noise but was corrected by manufacture bulletin"

Anonymous, PA (2015 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"All problems have been repaired/replaced to my satisfaction except for the wind noise. The dealer replaced door and window seals that only partially helped. the level of road and mostly wind noise is totally unacceptable. Hence the low miles. I plan to replace this unit with a 2018 model. If the noise level has not been resolved I will purchase a different model sedan"

"At speeds above 60 wind noise has increased since first buying"

Anonymous, NY (2015 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Air leaks in doors and side windows. I wear hearing aids and the wind and road noise makes hearing very annoying and difficult when driving over 30 mph. It is not the climate control as this noise still occurs with fan off and the noise would be apparent at lower speeds as well I have to put hearing aid on low gain in the car and we do not take trips in it. Our 2012 Legacy which my daughter now drives is much quieter than this 2015. This problem was noted in Subaru tech notes and was supposedly addressed by some production number below ours which does not appear to have happened.. Except for the wind/road noise and the uncomfortable seats the car appears to be up to Subaru body quality of the past. The 2015 year seems to be man anomaly but it is pushing us to move on after owning five of them. We won't be handing this one down in the family as all the others were."

Charles T., VA (2015 Subaru Legacy 3.6R 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"This car is not quiet as too much road noise is heard."

Michael H., ID (2015 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Warranty issue with front door seals. Replaced in 2015 on both front doors. No issues since."

Brion L., OR (2015 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"At about 20-25 mph wind noise starts. I wear hearing aids and it is very annoying as cannot hear conversation well or the radio. I turn the hearing aid down to ease the annoyance especially if on the highway. makes hearing the GPS a problem as noise gets worse at higher speeds. I complained to dealer but they say it is alright. Measured it with the noise with the noise meter app and it is up there in decibels. Car is much noisier than our previous Subaru.. It is not the heater/air as turn them and the fan off."

Charles T., VA (2015 Subaru Legacy 3.6R 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Agrvating noise on highways. Also cold drafts."

Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top.

What Owners Say

Doors or sliding doors

"Driver side door does not make a firm sound when closing like the other doors. Door seems to have a vibration sound"

Anonymous, PA (2015 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Driver door sound insulation slipped inside the door and the result was a hollow, tinny sound when door was closed. I raised a stink with Subaru USA, the dealer made an elaborate repair ruse, and the door still sounds tinny. Not isolated to our car alone. Everything else with car is fine"

Wayne I., WA (2015 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Had the interior door bracing that supports the sheet metal come apart on both front doors which resulted in a tinny/flimsy type sound when you would close the doors."

Anonymous, PA (2015 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Glass defects

"Spontaneous crack in windshield with about 1800 miles. Dealer and Subaru blamed a rock but I don't recall anything hitting the windshield. The replacement windshield is back ordered. They say that demand was unexpectedly high"

William F., NY (2015 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The windshield stars or cracks even with the smallest hit. I've had it replaced 4 times. I've been driving since I was 14 and I've only had 3 windows replaced previous to this car. I don't tailgate. Subaru claims Eyesight needs to be recalibrated after each windshield replacement. The dealers charge more than $200 for that. My insurance pays"

Dana H., CA (2015 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"windshield cracked (4 feet long) and was known problem to subaru and they later sent letter, but meantime replaced windshield locally"

Anonymous, MA (2015 Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Front windshield cracked due to manufact. defect. Repaired under warranty"

Anonymous, MA (2015 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Windshield cracking It has happened only once. Cost us $890, $500 deductible and $390 to recalibrate the Eyesight. The cracking is mentioned in Subaru problem areas in tech notes. This is only major mechanical problem we have had in owning five Subarus over the years."

Charles T., VA (2015 Subaru Legacy 3.6R 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"this is my 2nd windshield replacement"

Anonymous, NB (2015 Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This is the second occurrence of windshield cracking since purchased in 2015 for no reason"

David M., OH (2015 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Windshield developed a crack starting from a small chip. This is a known problem with that year Legacy"

Anonymous, NH (2015 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The windshield started cracking from the base near the heating elements, and the crack rapidly covered most of the windshield. We looked online and found many other owners had the same problem, where a small chip near the heating element leads to the windshield cracking dramatically. The dealership refused to cover it under warranty, though, because they found a tiny chip near the crack and claimed that chip damage wasn't covered. We had the windshield replaced with a non-OEM part."

Anonymous, MI (2015 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"glass cracked while driving. contact with insurance company indicated there was a recall on the windshield. Subaru replaced at no charge"

Sharon C., NJ (2015 Subaru Legacy 3.6-L 6 Cyl)
Locks and latches

"Gas tank lid would not release properly. Subaru loaned us a much smaller car while waiting for the part - had to order it twice to fix the problem"

Anonymous, NC (2015 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Remote release for fuel door has chronic problem with not letting fuel door open and there is no other way to open fuel door. Car was at dealer 3 times for this problem. First time (car 2 weeks old) door was adjusted, second time (early March 2015)"

"fuel filler door would not open because of factory quality assurance issues. The filler door itself was misaligned badly causing the door to be extremely difficult to close and stick in the closed position when trying to open for refueling. A 2 part"

Anonymous, WA (2015 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Same as my other Subaru. Fuel filler door was misaligned from the factory causing the door to be extremely difficult to close and jam in the closed position. Every refueling required a use of a credit card to pry open the fuel filler door until Sub"

Anonymous, FL (2015 Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The latch on the gas lid got stuck and had to be replaced. It was replaced under warranty."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I had repeated problems with the remote fuel door release not opening the fuel door; occurred 4 or so times the first year of ownership; after taking it to the dealer to get it open each time (no owner-accessible inside-the-trunk emergency release) Subaru put out a technical bulletin of how to fix it (still under warranty). Fix worked for 2 years the recurred, so back to the dealer; a subsequent tech bulletin said to replace the saucer section of the fuel door for the 50% of first-time fixes that original repair didn't correct. It's been about 9 months, so far so good, we'll see if this lasts. It was a very frustrating problem since it happened sporadically, and always when I needed fuel! I would have given the car a definitely buy again vs my probably buy again if not for this issue. I wish Subaru had just done a recall for all of the early 2015 Legacys, since I was told they were the only ones affected."

Donald W., RI (2015 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Fuel filler door would not open. Replaced out of pocket."

Anonymous, CT (2015 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The fuel door has problems unlatching and relatching. This problem becomes exasperated when water freezes around the fuel door making it impossible to unlatch without using tools to simultaneously hold the unlatch lever open while using a credit card to pry open the door and scrape out the ice build up. "It took 3 years to trouble shoot that the Transmission Control Module (TCM) was malfunctioning because there were no Fault Codes. The TCM was malfunctioning when it came off the assembly line and also on the my first drive I took with the Legacy. This was the first vehicle that I drove with a CVT transmission. Once I started driving the new Corolla with its smooth operating CVT, I knew there had to be something wrong this the Legacy CVT. When the mechanic test drove another 2015 Legacy and compared its CVT operation with my Legacy, he knew there was something wrong with the operation of my CVT. In consultation with the Tech specialist at Subaru, it was determined that the TCM was not programed properly. A new TCM was installed and the CVT now up shifts smoothly. I have wrote a letter to Subaru that they must create a computer program to test and ensure the TCM is functioning properly during the final testing as the vehicle as it comes off the assembly line."
