Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

At first blush the Subaru Legacy is a great all-around sedan, thanks to its standard all-wheel drive and reasonable price. But dig a bit deeper and you'll realize that is selling the car short. This is a car with very few compromises, effectively blending an excellent ride, responsive handling, a roomy and quiet interior, great visibility, simple controls, and easy cabin access front and rear. This all adds up to a package that puts it among the top performers in our ratings of midsized family sedans.

Sure, the Legacy doesn't set hearts racing based on its nondescript looks or its respectable-if-unexciting acceleration numbers. But with best ride and among the best handling and braking of its competitors, it topped the category in nearly every other measure of track performance.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2016 Subaru Legacy owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

CD player

"Difficult to play audiobooks"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen difficult to see

"Difficult to read screen in bright sunshine"

Kathryn Z., NJ (2016 Subaru Legacy Premium 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"The display screen is highly polished and angled in a way that creates veiling reflections and blinds the driver when the sun is behind you"

Bruce P., CA (2016 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Certain times of day the angle of the light from the sun completely obliterates the screen"

Steven A., SC (2016 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen freezes up

"We were on the highway with the radio/navigation, etc off. Suddenly, the radio turned on, it started scrolling down the radio stations, stopped on one station, then the whole system froze. We could not turn it off or change the screen. Only after arriving home, turning off the car, then starting it the next day did it work again. The dealership said they could not replicate the problem and could find nothing wrong with it"

Robert F., ND (2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Display froze brought the car in for service. Initially they told me there were no technical bulletins but there was a software update which could take 3-4 hours. Couldn't leave the car at that time. Brought it in a second time and there was a service bulletin issued for the problem I was seeing. They updated the software. When I got home I realized the update caused me to lose my sirius radio, Brought it in a third time and they could not resolve the problem."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Once the radio is turned on, after some time (1-2 hours) the screen becomes unresponsive. The car has to be turned off to reboot the screen"

David M., NY (2016 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"From time to time, the screen does not respond. It can only be solved by shutting down the car. Very very annoying"

Nancy L., NY (2016 Subaru Legacy 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Display sometimes freezes which makes audio inaccessible until the vehicle is turned of and restarted. Software updates have been moderately successful."

Anonymous, KY (2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Radio display freezes and requires ignition off/on cycle to correct. Problem was reported to Subaru customer service and they responded that the owners' manual notes that the display can be affected by temperature."

Anonymous, MI (2016 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen goes blank

"same as previous answer"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Frequently unable to connect to iPhone or Pandora"

Steven A., SC (2016 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The music interface will sometimes freeze and require turning the radio off and then turning it back on"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Music stored on my iPhone starts playing when I start the car or after I hands free disconnect from a phone call. I then have to fiddle around to shut the music off."

Anonymous, WA (2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"First, generally, Subaru head units are still garbage. The Starlink radios allow you to plug into iPhones to access music and podcast via an iPod interface. This seemed convenient because I could charge my iPhone and play music and Podcasts with high audio quality, without fussing with Bluetooth pairing. However, evidently this disables the GPS functionality in the phone, rendering it unusable for navigation: It falls back to cell towers only, at which point it fails to route, goes backwards, and other fun things. It was tricky to isolate the issue, and you can bet Subaru doesn't know the first thing about it. I finally was able to identify the issue myself after weeks on the phone with Apple Support and finally finding the right forum posts and YouTube videos. Supposedly there is a workaround to use the USB interface whereby you boot up Subaru's awful Starlink app when you plug in the phone each and every time, but it's so slow, bad, and otherwise irrelevant that I don't bother and just use Bluetooth now. The navigation that came with the Limited itself is pitiful and would cost $199/yr. after first two years to maintain map and traffic data. In the future, I would strongly advise anyone buying a Subaru to stick with the Premium trim or lower, get EyeSight and BLS, and get aftermarket audio rather than pay the $1K for the navi/Harmon Kardon. But that's only if you like adding oil."

Anonymous, PA (2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"If you have the sound muted when a call comes in, the sound will be un-muted when the call ends. The system should remember the mute state after the call ends"

James F., PA (2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Does not recognize Pandora app about 70% of the time. Does not return to the last source when turning car on"

Steve A., SC (2016 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"one of the USB ports doesn't always work."

Steve A., SC (2016 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"When I try to use my smartphone as a GPS device, the system automatically plays Pandora instead or at the same time. It is dangerous to be without directions in the middle of a strange city or highway and looking at the controls or my phone is equally dangerous. Nobody has been able to fix this. It seems to be a known problem."

Wendy W., NY (2016 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"an iPhone is a common device, but the interface is squirrelly and intermittently difficult. It will play music when you have podcasts selected and open on your phone; it will play podcasts when you have music selected and open on your phone."

David F., DC (2016 Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Voice commands would begin in mid-sentence, leaving out the first several words of the directions"

Paul S., FL (2016 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Gave misleading directions but ultimately got us to our destination. Replaced under warranty and no further problems"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Navigation location and commands lag behind actual vehicle position"

Steven C., MN (2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Defective electronic module had to be replaced"

Marvin M., NJ (2016 Subaru Legacy 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The problem only has occurred when on the highway. And it has happened twice. The GPS will pick a random spot to give directions to. We enter nothing into the GPS. It just does it on its own"

Robert F., ND (2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Map more than 2 years out of date when car was new. Have to pay for upgrade even with extended warranty. Inaccurate or bad routing information - cannot rely on navigation. Dealer not knowledgeable on now to correct issues. We have stopped using it"

Boyd N., MO (2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"the in dash navigation system does not understand voice commands associated with asking it to navigate to a location. All addresses must be entered manually."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"System froze and scrambled at different times."

Anonymous, VA (2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Car was delivered with an out of date map database. It has not been able to be updated though I have worked the problem several times with Subaru. Their mapping data vendor has been uncooperative. Also the Navigation advisor causes unsafe driving conditions by issuing commands too late to safely execute after improperly positioning me in the wrong lane."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Very difficult to take the special chip out of dash needed to update the GPS system, maps. I was never able to get it out. Finally used pliers to remove it and damaged it. Dealer quoted me $450 to repair. Appealing to Subaru they referred me to their map company which says I can get a new chip for $120. I am in process of doing it. Must do this as this damaged chip causes problems not only with maps but also voice control, radio... everything related. Subaru should have a much easier way to update their map systems such as using a USB thumb drive. The dealers should know what to tell people when it is damaged in the current system. I am very disappointed with Subaru. I like the car otherwise but could not recommend them to others given this problem."

Mark R., MN (2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"route navigation-vocal directions get clipped and inaudible and then forward speakers quit and only rear speakers work and then seems to affect and lock up radio where you can't change the station"

Anonymous, WI (2016 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This car has had multiple problems from the beginning. First the gas cap, a recall was fixed after new parts were ordered. Next, the technology operating the navigation such as side mirrors, backup alerts, etc. All this had to be replaced. Now, I am waiting for the dealership to fix the ignition system. They have order the parts which are on back order. I understand this is also a recall. I am terribly disappointed with this car. Subaru has not fulfilled its promise of LOVE! I intend to call the company and fill my complaints with the Better Business Bureau. Very Frustrating!!"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Subaru Legacy)

"Not particularly useful. Still can't figure out simple to home. Stopped trying, just use my trusty, easy to use Garmin that is working great after 6 or 7 years."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It is inconsistent."

Anonymous, CT (2016 Subaru Legacy)

"Inconsistent. See my previous issue about Pandora going on when I try to get directions"

Wendy W., NY (2016 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, AR (2016 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The SiriusXM radio fails to work intermittently. The radio sometimes will not change channels. The dealer replaced the radio, but that failed to solve the problem."

"Radio would not stay tuned to stations"

Anonymous, VA (2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"While driving with suriusXM radio on, when i would change the station, it would switch to FM. In order to get back to Surius, I would have to stop the car and shut off the car. Turning the radio off then back on didn't work. It has happened several times!"

Anonymous, MI (2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sirius/XM radio was intermittent. In dealer repair shop 2 times. Then the entire entertainment system was replaced. Did not solve problem. Issue was tracked down to water in the roof antenna housing. Based on my own radio experience, I told dealer up front that I thought it was an antenna issue. They did not believe me."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I think the glitch in the navigation system creates the other problems with the stereo, speakers, backup camera, etc. Sometimes seems related to when we have android phone plugged into car and using bluetooth"

"Sirius XM won't get a signal (yes I have a subscription). AM and FM work fine."

"The battery went dead, because of a software glitch. I finally had to replace the battery, but the car was 4 years old."

Anonymous, (2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I was unable to update the navigation system. The dealer said it would require $300 for a new memory chip. I use my phone instead for navigation, since the repair is too expensive for a system that's too shambolic and too user unfriendly."

It's loud, and was diagnosed by an independent shop as probably associated with either one of the front suspension struts or a problem with the steering rack. Disappointing in a near luxury car with just over 30K miles on it. Have yet to find time to have the dealer address it and of course it's out of warranty."

William S., NM (2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Rattle in front end at low speed. Spent $2k on services that “might help” to no avail. Blogs say it is common for 2016 Legacy, but dealers act like they never heard of it and cannot seem to fix it."

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Gear selector or linkage

"I was scared out of my wits when I put my 2015 Legacy from the 'reverse' (R) gear into the 'drive' (D) gear and it kept going in reverse almost slamming into car directly behind me. What happened: -I was parked on a steep winding driveway located on a very steep road. -I put the car in 'reverse' (R) to begin backing out of the driveway onto the steep road -Once on the steep road I then shifted into 'drive' (D) expecting to go forward. -But 'drive' (D) gear didn't seem to engage and kept rolli"

Anonymous, PA (2016 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"i couldn't get the key out of the ignition; it started out happening randomly and then got progressively worse. Subaru did over the cost of the replacement even though out of warranty because I had so few miles on the vehicle; I had a loaner and had it fixed in a day."

Anonymous, WI (2016 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"When the car was turned off and in park, could not remove keys from ignition. On of the sensor was replaced. I had an extended warranty."

Anonymous, (2016 Subaru Legacy Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Gear selector would not completely go into park, locking the key in the ignition. Moving the lever or actually driving the car forward or backward seemed to release the key. Started somewhere after 36000 miles and got slowly more frequent. Dealer told us this was a known difficulty and had the parts in stock to fix it. Problem resolved on first attempt."

Anonymous, MI (2016 Subaru Legacy Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Gear selector needed to be replaced - apparently wouldn't always move fully into "Park," so sometimes after shutting off, the vehicle couldn't then be placed in "Drive" on the re-start, without some backing up, turning off, re-starting"

What Owners Say

Emission control devices (includes EGR)

"Emissions recall regarding improper installation"

Anonymous, CO (2016 Subaru Legacy 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Problem caused dash light to come on. Manual indicated fuel cap could be loose. Not the problem. Brought it in to dealer (completed trip I was on, drove to nearest dealer ~100 - 120 mi.) where they determined it was some sort of sensor in the emissions system. During this time intelligent cruise control, collision avoidance not operational. Did not have the part. Gave me a loaner but had to drive 80 miles home (in the loaner) and back the 80 miles the next day to get the car."

Anonymous, PA (2016 Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Fuel gauge/sender

"I had just filled up my tank. I drove the car about 100 miles and then when I re-started it, the gauge showed I had only a little gas. I knew this couldn't be true. It also didn't accurately show remaining mileage. I was afraid to get on the freeway without filling it up. Of course, it didn't take much gas to do that. And the gauge didn't change. I took it to the dealer who told me there was a problem with a sensor in the gas tank (or something like that) and they would replace it. That would require that they remove the back seat, so I left the car there. Once they did that, I have had no further problems with this. Covered by the warranty."

Grady B., CA (2016 Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Fuel injection system

"Injector failed 30 miles after purchase. Injector froze open, dumping fuel into the engine constantly. Kicked off a whole slew of follow on problems that took 20,000 miles and months in the shop to fix"

Peter G., MD (2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Fuel pump

"Problem with the car starting. Would require extended cranking, sometimes have to turn the key three separate times before it would start. Dealer eventually discovered it was a problem with the fuel pump and replaced fuel pump."

Edward O., OH (2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"Mass Air Flow Sensor was damaged by the Injector Failure. It would read approximately 10% more air than was actually entering the engine. This caused massive power loss at low power, failure of the spark plugs, and other drive-ability issues. Subaru was unable to diagnose this failure, and kept giving me excuses and telling me nothing was wrong. This is due to a limitation with the ECU diagnostics that prevent the ECU from detecting a degraded but functional MAF sensor. I had to purchase a MAF s"

Peter G., MD (2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

What Owners Say

Automatic climate control

"Had an issue with the AC not cooling immediately after starting up after a shore down time (parked at a store). After a period of time, started to cool. Dealer made some adjustments (may have replaced a part - was under warranty so I didn't pay as much attention as I probably should have) and it was OK."

Anonymous, AZ (2016 Subaru Legacy 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"A/C seemed fine on initial start-up for the day but after driving/parking (in the heat) on driving away, the A/C would not start to cool until I'd driven for 15 min or so. Just blew hot air. After the initial period, A/C cooled just fine. Dealer said some switch in the A/C system needed replacing, which they did."

What Owners Say

Transmission rebuild or replacement

Anonymous, IN (2016 Subaru Legacy 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"These are CVT cars. My car is 3.6L, experienced some slipping a lot of the time, problem became worse over time. I went in for a tweak, dealership pulled the car for three weeks immediately for a transmission replacement under warranty. Apparently MANY of the CVT transmissions had troubles and ESPECIALLY the 3.6L models, which (I was told on the sly by the mechanic) is apparently overpowered (?) for these transmissions. That's why, I imagine, the service supervisor made sure I understood that the new transmission was covered under the old warranty - not a new warranty for the rebuilt transmission. If the new transmission poops out after next year, it's my dime. Personally, as soon as the qurantine lifts, I'm going out looking for a Mazda CX-5. Nice car, real gears in the transmission - Old School Rocks Da House"
