Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

At first blush the Subaru Legacy is a great all-around sedan, thanks to its standard all-wheel drive and reasonable price. But dig a bit deeper and you'll realize that is selling the car short. This is a car with very few compromises, effectively blending an excellent ride, responsive handling, a roomy and quiet interior, great visibility, simple controls, and easy cabin access front and rear. This all adds up to a package that puts it among the top performers in our ratings of midsized family sedans.

Sure, the Legacy doesn't set hearts racing based on its nondescript looks or its respectable-if-unexciting acceleration numbers. But with best ride and among the best handling and braking of its competitors, it topped the category in nearly every other measure of track performance.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2017 Subaru Legacy owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"CR & others continually downgrading good vehicles due to "connectivity " or "infotainment" issues. My wife got an email warning "low windshield washer fluid" When it stops squirtin' a steady stream fill the damn thing up. Lights & warning buzzers, tracking devices, black boxes, touch screens & other electronic crap are out of control. Techno-geeks are not only ruining the world now they're ruining our cars for those of us who focus on driving, which is what our priority should be"

Anonymous, PA (2017 Subaru Legacy 3.6R 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"When the weather turned unseasonably cold one fall evening the safety features to work. The temperature was only 37. However since we were out of town, the car had not been garaged the previous evening. The same thing happened one evening when we had been out with friends and the car had sat out in again 37 degree weather for a few hours. Upon complaining to the dealership they said they could duplicate our experience and they reset the Eyesight system. When we carefully checked the owner's manual, we discovered that this is a NORMAL occurrence in both cold and hot weather! If we had known this at the outset, we would not have paid so much for the safety features! We live in WV and 37 degrees is not cold for our state!"

Anonymous, WV (2017 Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen freezes up

"serious failures of the radio/nav system occurred from day 1. sbaru made every possible effort to fix without success and finally gave us 3000 to purchase and aftermarket system to replace their system. We paid 2200 for a pioneer system. Subaru also gave u free warraqnty upgrade, bluetooth speaker and a Dyson Vacuum as apology."

"screen freeze. dealer reprogramed no further problems."

Ronald P., IN (2017 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen goes blank

"Screen fills with multiple columns of top to bottom zig-zag lines. Must cover from light to read info on screen. Problem getting worse with time. Told by dealer not a warranty replaceable item. How am I suppose to see the back up camera safety feature?"

Glen K., FL (2017 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Screen went blank for a few days, made appointment to get fixed but before I took it in it started to work again been working fine since"

External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Volume goes to 0 at times..the satellite radio will often go to channel 0 after turning car back on"

Roy S., TN (2017 Subaru Legacy 3.6R 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"cannot use Waze as the system throws off navigation on everyones phone. Also switches from my audio book to pandora randomly during drive"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"After a bluetooth call the music cannot be reset to where it was before the call without restarting the car."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Subaru Legacy)

"The built-in head unit does not support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. It uses a somewhat proprietary interface called MirrorLink. I was able to use the interface at first, but it quit working after I purchased a MirrorLink compatible GPS app. I had the dealer do a software update on the unit, it made no difference."

Anonymous, PA (2017 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"iPod interface turns off connected iPod at odd times and is useless until the car is stopped and the iPod is restarted. This often happens when changing songs or albums with steering wheel control"

Dennis D., GA (2017 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sometimes when using BlueTooth to play music from my iPhone over the car's stereo system, the track would advance or restart without my having hit any buttons"

Geoffrey F., MA (2017 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The car has Apple Play which pairs with the phone, but requires a plug in connection. Apple Play sometimes works; other times it will play for 3-5 minutes then stop. Then, I have to unplug the phone, wait a bit, and plug it in again. Sometimes that fixes the problem and I can listen for another 3-5 minutes. Sometimes the car will not recognize the phone and I get an error message. Sometimes, nothing happens at all. I have re-booted the phone, re-paired with the car, updated my iPhone operating system and replaced the cable. The Subaru dealer has looked at it twice and has told me to do each of the things I've already done. They couldn't duplicate it at the dealership and they act like I'm a lunatic when I describe the problem."

Gary R., CA (2017 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Doesn’t work when car is very hot."

Jack N., ON (2017 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Jack P., PA (2017 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"it would freeze and not function. it was replaced"

Doug R., NY (2017 Subaru Legacy Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"The Navigation system is supposed to automatically change to a darker screen when the sun goes down (like it used to) and vise versa. The screen just stays on the daylight setting even though I have checked to see if it is set to change to the night time setting (which it is)."

"Dealer replaced the navigation system"

James N., IL (2017 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It seems that Subaru from the dealer told me to call 2 phone numbers of which neither would help. The problem is that on a trip (i.e. Florida) the GPS says traffic jam ahead. Nothing was ahead at all, but we got caught on Route 15 outside of Washington DC and it gave us no warning at all,"

Jack P., PA (2017 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"radio works fine. sirus xm not conecting"

Robert Y., NY (2017 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Between delivery to dealer and several test drives, the XM antenna connection failed. It had worked as some XM stations had been pre-programmed, but when I took delivery, it had failed"

Ray M., CA (2017 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Believe it or not, there is no way to turn the radio off. Oh, there is a button to push while the radio is playing and it will silence it. But, after turning off the car and then re-starting, the radio is, as if by magic, on again. The dealership suggests that prior to turning off the car, I turn the volume to zero if I don't want to hear the radio at start-up."

Gary R., CA (2017 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Long delay from the time of turning on the XM stations to the stations actually coming on. As long as 10-12 minutes or more"

Software update fixes

"MPG wasn't working correctly, and how many miles left before a fill up is necessary. Didn't notice it it was updated for free during a regular oil change."

Ronald P., IN (2017 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The map update did not work; the remaining mileage to refuel was way out of whack: just told last week that it is a warranty issue to be fixed at dealer (4/22)"

Steve A., SC (2017 Subaru Legacy Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Clock, mileage froze."

Nancy M., MN (2017 Subaru Legacy 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Car had defective telemetry engine computer system which drained the battery nightly. Authorized Subaru dealer unable to identify fault for seven months. Told me it was my fault for not driving car enough. Local gas station mechanic told me what the problem was and to insist that authorized dealer look harder. I had been told to replace the battery twice, bought a jump starter and trickle battery tender. The fault was with the authorized dealer whose mechanics didn't bother to diagnose the problem. They hooked it up to a machine and looked no farther, and absolved themselves of responsibility by saying it was my problem. I will not use their service again."

Anonymous, DC (2017 Subaru Legacy 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Voice control commands

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"The air leaks were experienced from when the vehicle was a month old. The dealer acknowledged the noise and that the 2017 was noisier than their older models. The manufacturer could not offer a fix so it remains. This problem is mentioned on many of the internet sites. We concluded it was a design issue that forces the wind into the front doors."

Anonymous, (2017 Subaru Legacy 3.6-L 6 Cyl)
Squeaks or rattles

"under hood panel is loose on one side (clips cannot be secured) and dealer says that it seems that other cars have the same normal problem. Rattles from the dashboard RHS"

Anonymous, BC (2017 Subaru Legacy 3.6R 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

Nicholas L., IN (2017 Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Very irritating. When I listen to the radio, I listen to classical music. It is difficult to hear it with the wind noise. Had it in twice to get fixed. Did not solve the problem. Purchased wind deflectors. It did not help. Getting no satisfaction from the dealer regarding possible solutions. I would not buy this model again for this reason. The ride is also not as good as my previous Honda Accord."

Wayne P., ON (2017 Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Interior lights

"Somehow, probably because of the car's automatic systems for turning on interior lights, the interior lights seem to have never turned off when they were supposed to, and as a result the next day I found the car wouldn't work at all (because the battery had drained). Thank goodness, the dealership took care of this and didn't bill me for anything, but I did end up without the use of the car for several days, plus having to undertake the rather lengthy trip to the dealership and back, which basi"

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"The front bumper detached from frame at the tab interlock due to a broken PLASTIC U-shaped where it was bolted to frame. REPEAT: ONE BOLT FOR THE ENTIRE LEFT FENDER. Dealer fix for car under Warranty was cause attributed to unseen road hazard not covered by Warranty; however, for $1800 they would sell me a new front bumper! I have yet to get under the fender to glue it in place with a little epoxy. ///And then was the 25 inch cracked window appearing 6 hours after I purchased. Took them a week to order a new one and then re-calibrate the Spy-Glass Safety System. The INTEGRA is underpowered, but the backup camera system is better. Loose steering, car would drift from side to side on highway. Car was at the dealer for repair for over one month during the last year. Rack and pinion were replaced. Car still vibrates and is uncomfortable to drive. This problem has been an issue since the car was new. Poor corporate support. It is impossible to find a technical person at corporate to discuss mechanical problems. Dealer appears limited in dealing with out of the ordinary problems."

"Noticed the AC wasn't working first warm day this spring but don't know when it quit (Michigan winter). Subaru i using new refrigerant in 2017 models. First had to wait for dealer to get refrigerant, then had to wait for them to get the proper sniffer tool before they could identify that the evaporator was leaking. And then finally had to wait for the replacement part and installation"

Charles R., MI (2017 Subaru Legacy 3.6R 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Just had A/C repaired for the third time because all refrigerant had leaked out. Since I live in Michigan I don't know when it failed during the winters. I bought car in the fall of 2016 and A/C had no refrigerant by spring of 2017. It was repaired and lasted until August. Repaired and lasted until sometime this past winter. Just repaired for the third time. I have little confidence that the problem is really fixed. This is the worst car repair experience I've had in almost 50 years of car ownership."
