Worse Better
Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

With its futuristic gee-whiz innovation and astonishing performance, the fully-electric Tesla Model S seems like a car from another planet. The Model S was the highest-scoring car we'd ever tested, with its high-performance all-wheel-drive version scoring even higher.

As advanced as the Tesla is, what makes it so impressive is how seamlessly it blends into everyday life. No other fully-electric car comes close to its 200-mile-plus range, limiting a key compromise inherent with electric cars. The Tesla also happens to be enjoyable to drive, it is brimming with technology and benefits from hatchback practicality. It matches the acceleration of the world's top sports cars mending it with the usability of a family sedan. But compared to other luxury cars brushing with a six-figure price tag, the Tesla's interior quality and seats aren't quite up to par.

Anonymous, MA (2015 Tesla Model S 85D Electric)

"In February 2020 the front passenger-side door handle stopped extending; the door could be opened from the interior but not the exterior. I had service come to my house to replace the handle module, but this did not fix the issue so I took it to the nearest service center where they diagnosed it as a wiring harness issue and installed a temporary fix. This past week the handle stopped extending again, then later in the week it started extending again but would not unlatch the door, and the rear passenger handle stopped extending. A new service visit has been booked for the end of May."

Windows

"Rear passenger side window would not roll up completely due to cable stretch according to Tesla shop."

Anonymous, FL (2015 Tesla Model S 70D Electric)

"The mechanisms either stutter, refuse to close the window, or in the case of the moonroof, seem to struggle. 2 window motors have been replaced, I am probably on my way to a third. Also, unique to the model S, I have had 4 out of 4 door handles replaced. The gen 1 door handles were not reliable. I have 1 gen 2, and 3 gen 3s now. I really wish they had a safety feature to prevent them from pinching children's fingers when they close (think garage door obstruction beam tech or equiv) which they do NOT."

Anonymous, NJ (2015 Tesla Model S 85D Electric)
Wind noise

"Sounds like the window trims do not seal properly"

Anonymous, MI (2015 Tesla Model S P85D Electric)

"The wind noise and air/water leaks at all door and trunk seals are not of the caliber you would expect in a luxury vehicle. It is compounded by the fact that it is the ONLY noise you hear in the car. It would be way less noticeable if instead of dual motors, there was a combustion engine. So, they need to account for this and seal the doors to assure a quiet ride and easy washability. Right now, water pools at the edges of the tunk & doorframes, it's kinda a pain, and the ride is not dead silent, you hear excessive wind as compared to a Lexus, Audi, Maserati, etc."

Anonymous, AZ (2015 Tesla Model S 90D Electric)

"A mechanic came to our house and made some adjustments that eliminated the noise."

Anonymous, (2015 Tesla Model S P85D Electric)

"I have had the moon roof serviced several times to correct wind noise and correct water leaks during a very heavy downpour. The leak was fixed quickly but the wind noise persists. In my opinion, the moon roof has design flaws"

Anonymous, IL (2015 Tesla Model S 85D Electric)

"Seal for sunroof on driver's side imperfect leading to wind noise. Tesla will soon be picking up the car and repairing the problem"

Holly B., CA (2015 Tesla Model S 85 kWh Electric)

"The window and seal required adjustment. Currently no problem. Tesla doing the repair at my home was terrific."

Heated or cooled seats

"The drivers seat developed a wobble, as if something was loose inside. The service center confirmed it and said it would be replaced. It took many phone calls and emails over 4 months before a replacement seat was available. Once it was available, they replaced the seat within a day."

Anonymous, MD (2015 Tesla Model S 85D Electric)

"Just before Christmas the airbag warning light came on and when I called Tesla they said to bring the car in immediately, as it indicated that the entire airbag system was shut down which obviously affects the safety of the car. They diagnosed it as a failed wiring harness. They ordered the correct part number, but when it arrived, it wasn't the correct physical part, so they had to find the right one. In the mean time, they gave me a new Model S as a loaner car for a couple of weeks. I always drive with the seat warmers on, and never got much warmth out of it, especially the bottom seat cushion. In the loaner car the seat cushion was so hot that I had to turn it down. When they fixed the wiring harness a few weeks later I asked if they had redesigned the heated seats to be hotter, or did my car have a problem. They checked it out and said that my seat cushion was defective. To fix the problem, it wasn't a matter of replacing the heating element in the seat cushion, or replacing the seat cushion itself, instead they had to replace the entire drivers seat. They said it would take 4 - 6 weeks to get the replacement seat delivered. It's now been 3 months and every time that I inquire, I'm told it's back ordered. I have no idea what is going to show up for 2 reasons. First, in the 2+ years I've owned the car, they've changed the stitching pattern on the seats, so there's a good chance the 2 front seats won't look the same. Second, my car has a gray interior and they stopped making gray sometime last year, so I have no idea what's going to show up. But, 3 months isn't bad based on their track record. When my car was a few months old, the main battery failed. They refused to replace it with a new one, saying Tesla's policy was to remanufacture mine and it'd take 4 - 6 weeks depending on how backed up their remanufacturing process was. It was 6 months before my battery was re-manufactured and returned, and when they installed it in the car and ran diagnostics, it was declared defective as it wouldn't hold a charge. I leased my car and I pity whoever is the next owner as it's been nothing but one problem after another. Tesla is oblivious to their customers and don't know how to run a car company. I'm going back to Mercedes."

"A groaning noise from the front was very pronounced when turning the steering wheel to the left, and a little to the right. Upper left control arm had to be replaced"

Anonymous, NY (2015 Tesla Model S P85D Electric)

"Steering failed abruptly and without any warning or advance symptoms as I was pulling out of my driveway. Car became extremely difficult to steer. (Large effort required to turn the steering wheel.) Numerous error messages displayed on the screen. Car was taken by flatbed to the Tesla service center. Diagnosis was that one or more steering bolts had failed, requiring replacement of the rack. This was done under warranty (also would have been covered under a factory Service Bulletin, per the service writer). Note that I had received a letter some months before this, that indicated that steering bolts were the subject of a recall, and that my car's steering would be repaired when parts became available. Apparently in my case, the bolt(s) failed before the SC called me in for preemptive repairs. A loaner car was provided to me while the car was in the S/C, so I had only minor inconvenience, aside from the time spent waiting for a flatbed."

David B., MA (2015 Tesla Model S 70D Electric)

"Drive unit quit working on the road. Tesla towed me to a service center and replaced it under warranty. No out of pocket cost to me. The service experience was pleasant, and I was down for only one day."

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Parking brake

"Right hand side electric actuator stopped working. At first, it would not release and car was not drivable. Next morning, it would not engage correctly but was able to drive to service center."

Anonymous, (2015 Tesla Model S 85D Electric)

"The warning came on on the console- panel "brake problem [or something like that] unsafe to drive" Iwas 3 blocks from Tesla service -Vancouver. Drove it there. Problem was parking calipre on right rear had failed. Apparently had rusted up the screw mechanism that forces calipres on. Maybe because of our damp climate! Service dept. replaced both left and right calipres Cost $1600 plus taxes. I should have kept the good one to replace the next timethis happened. Otherwise the car runs well and does not need normal servicing of gas cars. I see I have room to comment on another item. The auto parking has been tempermental from the beginning partly my learning disability, but now it does not work at all. Service dept. tells me that the older models have had some history of this. I did not leave it for exploration and service"

"E-brake sensor broke. E-brake functions fine, but it thought it was still enabled, which it wasn't"

Justin P., WA (2015 Tesla Model S 85D Electric)
Regular brake failure

"After the car sat in rainy conditions for a couple of hours, the first time I break (even pressing the pedal all the way to the floor), the car would barely decelerate and the ABS would not engage. After breaking a second and third time, the brakes would operate normally again. I had this occur on four separate occasions. After I called Tesla, they picked up the vehicle the same day and serviced the brakes but could not replicate the problem or find its cause. They did this all for free and with great customer service. I have not experienced the problem again since they serviced the car."

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Automatic climate control

"The automatic climate control system in my Model S has never worked. For example, if the outside temp is 90F and the interior temp is over 100F and you start the car, it is expected that the ACC would come on full blast and cool the car as quickly as possible, but it does not. Instead of the fan speed being at max, it comes on at a setting of 3 or 4. When I reported this to Tesla, the service center told me that the car was designed to work that way, and if I wanted to make it work more quickly, I should change the temp control to MAX cool, and manually change the fan to MAX speed. So, Tesla has intentionally designed their Automatic Climate Control system to be a fully Manual Climate Control system (i.e. ACC versus MCC). For someone living where it's hot in the summer and cold in the winter, this is not what the buyer of a $120,000 4 door luxury sedan expects."

Anonymous, (2015 Tesla Model S P85D Electric)

"I inadvertently ran the car through high standing water during a rain storm which resulted in water getting inside what I understood to be a sealed battery and Tesla considered it collision damage. The repair involved a main battery replacement at a cost of more than $20,000 and required me having to file an auto insurance claim to cover the cost"
