While almost every other midsized SUV had moved to car-based construction, the 4Runner remained an old-school, body-on-frame SUV, which was great for off-roading but not much else. The ride is unsettled and handling is mediocre at best. Limited trim versions have a sport suspension package with somewhat better control, but a stiffer ride. Off-road is where the 4Runner excels.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2013 Toyota 4Runner owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Ball joints

"One ball joint had some play that sometimes transmited a shudder to the steering wheel in some driving conditions."

Paul A., TX (2013 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0-L V6)
Shocks or struts

"Minor leak in system developed I was not aware of; problem noted during inspection."

Anonymous, TX (2013 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0-L V6)

"All 4 shocks/struts were leaking, which gave the vehicle a rough ride. It was very expensive to replace (over $3,000) and took nearly a week to order the parts and the work completed by the dealer where I purchased the car."

Anonymous, CA (2013 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0-L V6)

"Just thought it was very expensive to replace."

Johnie G., VA (2013 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0-L V6)

"Hydraulic system to shock system went out; not aware of issue while driving. Surprised this went out as early as it did; dealer too was a little taken back."

Anonymous, TX (2013 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0-L V6)

"Only front struts were leaking but it requires replacing front and rear as a set along with control system. This was a $3000+ repair that required us to make multiple trips to the dealer because they did not know everything that was required to be replaced and then did not have the parts on hand.."

Anonymous, CA (2013 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0-L V6)

"Would not past inspection. All struts and shocks needed to be replaced at once"

Anonymous, VA (2013 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0-L V6)
Steering wheel vibration

"I'm feeling a clunking noise through the steering wheel. I had a local Toyota dealer attempt to fix it - but just recommended a rear axles lift kit. Installed for $500 and it did nothing. Again, it's a clunking and vibration coming from the front end. Could be steering sub shaft assembly, shock or shock mounts, racks and pinion, etc. I will find a great technician and it will be repaired. On another subject: In hot weather the brake calipers are slow to release. They can make a squeaking noise. They are original. Just pads and rotors were replaced for the first time at over 120,000 miles - but my mileage used to be all highway and I'm aware of not overusing my brakes when the manumatic gears work well. I would buy this again. Toyota is number one. I'm driving this forever. It won't be sold or traded-in. It's paid-off and financing $50k (I would get a TRD Pro for the next one) isn't something that interests me right now."

Anonymous, (2013 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0-L V6)
Wheel bearings

"An increasing noise was noted in car; first thought to be tires but inspection noted it was rear bearing."

Anonymous, TX (2013 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0-L V6)

Anonymous, NY (2013 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0-L V6)

Kathleen M., NY (2013 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4.0-L V6)

Ralph O., PA (2013 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0-L V6)

"When driving the GPS just hangs up & then after a few minutes it restarts & doesn't remember the location of the destination. To put the destination in again you have to stop (good safety feature). So, I put a Garmin GPS on the dashboard & use that"

Anonymous, UT (2013 Toyota 4Runner Trail 4.0-L V6)
Radio

"Satellite radio stopped working. It was a problem with the head unit where the satellite antenna plugs in. Replacement started at $3500."

What Owners Say

Engine computer

"A sensor failed in the engine, it regulated pre-ignition and detonation. The sensor itself was $150 and there are two on this engine. The sensors are located inside the engine so I had a huge project ahead. Also the 2013 model maintenance manual indicated the cylinders have to be removed.
