The smooth-riding Avalon could easily pass for a luxury car costing tens of thousands of dollars more. Performance
Acceleration Acceleration Acceleration tests are conducted on a smooth, flat pavement straightaway at the track. Time, speed, and distance measurements are taken with a precise GPS-based device that’s hooked to a data-logging computer.
0 to 60 mph 0 to 60 mph (sec.) The time in seconds that a vehicle takes to reach 60 mph from a standstill with the engine idling.
Transmission Transmission Transmission performance is determined by shifting smoothness, response, shifter action, and clutch actuation for manual transmissions.
Fuel Economy Fuel Economy We perform our own fuel-economy tests, independent of the government's often-quoted EPA figures and the manufacturers' claims. Using a precise fuel-flow measuring device spliced into the fuel line, we run two separate circuits to represent city and highway consumption.
CR's Overall Mileage CR's Overall Mileage CR's overall mileage is a composite of measured fuel usage on a prescribed city course and highway cruising; and CR's 150-mile test trip of mixed driving, if tested. In recent road tests, we've discontinued the 150-mile trip test.
CR's City Mileage CR's City Mileage Measured fuel usage on a prescribed city course.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2011 Toyota Avalon owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"The mirror system stopped working properly. It was replaced under warranty"

Anonymous, OH (2011 Toyota Avalon Base 3.5-L V6)

"Tire inflation sensor showed low pressure and was incorrect. We were told it was a battery in the sensor that quit. I asked them to replace all tire sensor batteries but the price was unreasonable"

Michael S., AR (2011 Toyota Avalon Base 3.5-L V6)
CD player

"CD jammed in player"

Anonymous, NJ (2011 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"CD Unit completely failed and damaged the four library audio CDs loaded at the time. Dealer can only replace with new unit. Toyota does not repair CD units"

Timothy D., CA (2011 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"CD skips or replays previous songs instead of moving to the next song"

Anonymous, FL (2011 Toyota Avalon Base 3.5-L V6)

"CD could not be added, removed, or used"

Anonymous, MA (2011 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"CDs easily jam in the player. CD player had to be removed from car to service and sent out from Toyota dealer (and I never got my CD back.)"

George H., NJ (2011 Toyota Avalon Base 3.5-L V6)

"It does not recognize most of my CDs so I don't know what's playing on any particular track, for an expensive car it's a cheap system"

Anonymous, IN (2011 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)
Display screen difficult to see

"During the day bright sunlight makes it difficult to see along with all other dash display items. It's only at night when all dash display items can be seen with ease"

Anonymous, AR (2011 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"The bluetooth interface dies at inappropriate times and endangers driving when there is no shoulder or pull-off available. It seems that Toyota rolled out it's electronics before they were truly ready. Even the dealer's technicians couldn't figure out what was causing these snafus. Add to that, the in-dash screen is impossible to see in bright sunlight."

Anonymous, CO (2011 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"System failed to read map DVD on occasion. Gave error message that DVD was not loaded."

Anonymous, WA (2011 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The factory installed navigation system is still flaky, even after updating the CD-ROM to the 2015 version of maps. Going from Toledo to Chicago on Indiana toll road the Avalon GPS tells me to exit Interstate 80 and drive north to Interstate 94. Totally out-of-the-way. Going from Springfield, Illinois to Chicago it refuses to recognize some state highways and it provides wildly wrong distance and ETA estimates"

Jim N., IL (2011 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Quit taking input"

C M., SC (2011 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"System did not recognize Western destinations in Arizona or gave wrong directions to them."

Anonymous, AZ (2011 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

Boyd A., UT (2011 Toyota Avalon Base 3.5-L V6)

"shocks become very hard in lower temperatures and create a loud clunking sound as you hit imperfections in the roads. Also because of the initial poor painting from Toyota factory, the top of vehicle has paint peeling off. Toyota knows of the problem but will do nothing about it! This is not uncommon on this age of vehicle. (2011 Avalon)"

Bruce C., MD (2011 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Roof paint bubbling & peeling. Delamination is caused by improper painting process with the white pearl paint. Dealer had a process to follow to get a case number from Toyota Corporate. Case number was issued, but Toyota never responded. After many calls to the dealer and Toyota Customer Service, nothing. No response because that person is off today, or that person is on vacation, or that person is off for the holiday, etc. Corporate said we had to work with our dealer. Our dealer said he wasn't getting anywhere with Corporate. Out of pocket expense $1,700.00+ as well as one week without the car while the body shop made the repairs."

John O., NY (2011 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"When I got to the dealership to look at the car, they had just washed it and paint was coming off the roof. Otherwise, I liked the car and I bought it after they fixed the paint. The salesman claimed the paint problem was probably due to improper repaired hail damage. Five months later paint began to peak by the rear window. The paint color is pearl white and I found out there was a problem with this color with the 2005 model. The defect is not covered for Toyota Certified Used Cars. The dealership claimed they liked to keep customers happy and told me it I brought the car in they likely fix the problem at no charge. After taking off work and making a 200 mile round trip, I was told I had been misinformed and since I did not service my car with them they really did not care about me. It looks like a thousand dollar repair will be the result."
