Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. Road Test

With its 2013 redesign, the Avalon became more stylish and engaging to drive. This rethought big sedan is impressive in many ways, with a spacious interior, improved handling, and powerful yet efficient powertrains. But some of the changes eroded the car's luxurious and easy-going nature. It no longer has the pillow-soft ride of its predecessor, which was one of its more remarkable features. The sharp new styling also took its toll on visibility, access, and the notably large backseat, which is now narrower and provides less legroom.

We tested two Avalons in the top Limited trim. The first is powered by a 268-hp, 3.5-liter V6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission. The other is a hybrid, powered by 200-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with electric assist, mated to a continuously variable transmission. Fuel economy was impressive in both cars: We averaged 24 mpg overall with the V6 and 36 mpg overall in the Hybrid. Both powertrains operate with silky smoothness and provide good acceleration.

"Owned a 2010 Toyota Avalon and traded in for a 2014 Avalon.I was told by the Toyota Salesperson that the 2-14 suspension was a hard riding vehicle but that I would get used to it. Compared to my 2010 this car rides like a pickup truck"

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The ride is too harsh -- the result of a 2013 redesign that stiffened the suspension too much from the smooth ride the model was famous for. In 2016 Toyota will offer two suspensions - sport and traditional. They made a mistake! We're very unhappy"

K G., CO (2014 Toyota Avalon Hybrid Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"I purchased the 2014 Avalon based on my previous experience owning and driving the Avalon model. All previous 4 Avalon's I owned were comfortable to ride in, or to drive. The suspension on the 2014 Avalon, however, is too tight. The car rides like an off road vehicle over minor bumps or uneven surfaces. The ride is jarring and uncomfortable. Based on this experience, I will not purchase another Avalon, nor would I recommend an Avalon to friends or family."

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"I have to pay to have a mildew "smell" cleaned out of my AC and blower system every year. Toyota will not cover this issue. The AC and heater are built together and there is supposedly a piece of plaastic in between that gathers mildew form the humid"

Anonymous, TX (2014 Toyota Avalon XLE 3.5-L V6)
Automatic climate control

"I cannot control the speed of the Fan. I can only insert one CD at a time"

Electrical failure

"The entire heating/cooling system stopped working. Dealer repaired the problem and said it was some kind of electrical connection problem with the computer. They were a little vague"

Anonymous, NC (2014 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)
Evaporator

"Evaportor retains moisture leading to moldy air coming in through AC"

Anonymous, CO (2014 Toyota Avalon Hybrid Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The car has a design flaw that Toyota refuses to fix. If you run air conditioner, you have to run outside air into the car 10 minutes before you turn the engine off, or you get mold in the air conditioning system which costs $80-120 to fix each time. Dealer has no permanent fix for it. I think that is ridiculous for what the car cost. I don't intend to ever buy another Toyota"

"Toyota needs to allow drivers to use a variety of nav sites. Their's has gotten me terribly lost. My favorite is while driving on a 5 lane busy highway, the voice says,"Be prepared to exit the highway" impossible NOT to yell back, "Which way, moron?"

"At mid day a vehicle turning right crossed more that 200 yards in front of us at an intersection and the Avalon briefly locked all four wheels even though, in my view, there was no risk of collision. All of our vehicle occupants were startled by the unexpected braking. In my view if there had been another car close behind us we might have collided. Shortly after that incident Toyota announced the recall to reprogram the emergency braking system. No new program was available for the system and we were instructed to disable the system until a new program was available. After about 6 months our dealer installed the new program. We have had no unneeded braking incidents since the new system was installed."

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Maddening. Airbag warning light comes on, stays on up to 3 days, Dealer can't diagnose until warning light is on 100% of the time. Have driven to dealer with light on. When they turn the car on in the service area, light is off. Been an on-going problem for 4 years."

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Transmission rebuild or replacement

"The transmission was slipping gears had had to be replaced"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Toyota Avalon XLE 3.5-L V6)

"It started slipping between 2nd and 3rd gear, actually sliding into neutral in between. When it downshifted it would nearly stop the car--similar to gearing too low too soon with a straight shift. It also would not go into drive immediately."

Anonymous, TN (2014 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The transmission would rev the engine between second and third gear both upshift and downshift before finally going into gear. This was dangerous when you needed the car in the gear instead of in neutral. It then started not going into drive from reverse. It was in the shop twice for these issues before the transmission was replaced. And the new transmission ONLY came with a 1-year warranty instead of a 5-year warranty like the original."

Anonymous, TN (2014 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)
