Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

With its 2013 redesign, the Avalon became more stylish and engaging to drive. This rethought big sedan is impressive in many ways, with a spacious interior, improved handling, and powerful yet efficient powertrains. But some of the changes eroded the car's luxurious and easy-going nature. It no longer has the pillow-soft ride of its predecessor, which was one of its more remarkable features. The sharp new styling also took its toll on visibility, access, and the notably large backseat, which is now narrower and provides less legroom.

We tested two Avalons in the top Limited trim. The first is powered by a 268-hp, 3.5-liter V6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission. The other is a hybrid, powered by 200-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with electric assist, mated to a continuously variable transmission. Fuel economy was impressive in both cars: We averaged 24 mpg overall with the V6 and 36 mpg overall in the Hybrid. Both powertrains operate with silky smoothness and provide good acceleration.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2015 Toyota Avalon owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Display screen freezes up

"Sometimes occurs several times per day, often when cell phone is recharging. Technician suggested we film the event so they could try to understand what might cause it."

Frank H., GA (2015 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The problem was resolved by updating the firmware associated with the system."

Anonymous, GA (2015 Toyota Avalon XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The entune infotainment system will freeze and restart randomly resulting in loss of GPS navigation and dropped calls via bluetooth"

Anonymous, MA (2015 Toyota Avalon Touring 3.5-L V6)

"The screen freezes at random intervals, sometimes separated by weeks, sometimes by hours, and the system then resets and works fine until the next episode. Annoying if using the system for directions at the time. Asked technician about it once, but he said he saw no defect at that time and asked us to film it when it freezes. Haven’t done so."

Frank H., GA (2015 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"After being on and playing radio and using the navigation the screen will freeze up. The radio won't even turn off. After several minutes of pushing icons it freed up only to do it again minutes later"

James K., PA (2015 Toyota Avalon XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Navigation system freezes up frequently on trips, sometimes three times a day. Toyota dealer suggests we take photos or videos to document the problem"

Frank H., GA (2015 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"the display/system reboots"

Anonymous, TX (2015 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The screen was stuck on the "select display options" screen for several months. The problem went away a month or so ago."

Anonymous, GA (2015 Toyota Avalon XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Once a week, but sometimes multiple times in a travel day, the display screen seizes up and resets itself. Has done this for years, but inconsistently. Dealership told us to film it so they could analyze the problem."

Anonymous, GA (2015 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)
Display screen goes blank

"twice the screen has just gone off; the first time it seemed to affect engine operations (i was parked and the car turned off); the second time the car continued running but the screen was useless.)"

John D., CA (2015 Toyota Avalon Touring 3.5-L V6)

"While on a trip the screen froze stopping the radio and navigation system. Turning the radio off and on a few times it restarted the display only to have it freeze again a few moments later. It was still covered under warranty and the dealer fixed it by reloading the computer (so they say), but only after through inspection for rodent damage."

James K., PA (2015 Toyota Avalon XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Occasionally the screen will go blank but return on it's own"

James K., PA (2015 Toyota Avalon XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The screen would reboot as though it was powered off and on again. Fixed by Toyota. Turned out it needed a software update"

Joe G., PA (2015 Toyota Avalon XLE 3.5-L V6)

"GPS system failed. Dealer replaced under warranty"

Edson K., WA (2015 Toyota Avalon XLE 3.5-L V6)

"When display seizes up and resets, the screen goes blank while resetting."

Anonymous, GA (2015 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"The device interface continually has issues with my IPOD so that it stops working and I have to reset it. A very annoying feature of the system"

Anonymous, FL (2015 Toyota Avalon Touring 3.5-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"It froze along with all controls for radio. If I restarted the car everything worked again for a short period."

Anonymous, GA (2015 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"in accurate routing to desired locations."

Anonymous, NY (2015 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The navigation system volume and display brightness cannot be adjusted while driving without multiple distracting touch entries on the display."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Not up to date; I haven't read how to update the maps, but it doesn't have all the streets in my town... at least a couple years out of date."

John D., CA (2015 Toyota Avalon Touring 3.5-L V6)

"The system is difficult to use regarding information input and getting timely reliable directions. There is no apparent means of ending a navigation before actually arriving at one's destination."

Todd G., CT (2015 Toyota Avalon XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Don't use it now. Rely on a smartphone. Poor directions."

Thomas F., AZ (2015 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"It would shut down then reboot without adjustments"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Piece of crap. On occasion it just gets us "NEAR". It's very confusing compared to our Garmin GPS.. We complained to the Toyota service manager - He said " That our old Garmin is 100 times better!!!! Toyota Sales was mum. CR warned us"

Anonymous, FL (2015 Toyota Avalon Hybrid Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"In the winter, cold air comes in around the door handles"

Harold W., IN (2015 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)
Seals and/or weather-stripping

"There was a noise everytime i went into my driveway, slight up hill. Took to dealer and they couldn't replicate. I then went home and turned cell on and video taped the noise They thought they knew what it was, the sunroof. Was not the problem , wouldn't go away. Finally took me with one od the mechanics and we tried to duplicate it by driving up a driveway, no sound. Way back to dealer as we went in the driveway he heard the noise and knew exactly what it was. They fixed it but it took many trips ( I live 45 minutes from dealer) but they stuck with it until they found the problem."

"The blower motor fan has gone out twice on my 2015 Avalon. Both times, it would work sporadically before it went out totally. I took the car in to tell them it's going out. Until it went out totally, very inconvenient, they wouldn't fix it or see if there was a problem. In fact, it went out the first time on a trip. Not happy with Toyota On this issue."
