What Owners Say
"Check engine light came on about a couple of months before State inspection for 3 years in a row. I always took it to the dealer, they would fool with it replace a few parts inspect it and then it would happen again the next year. It had something to do with emission sensors."
Roger P., TX (2001 Toyota Camry CE 2.2-L 4 Cyl)"The check engine light has been on for the past 2 years. The local dealership said it would cost $500 and I didn't have the money then. Last month, I got an oil change and told them I had been smelling exhaust on the interstate. They said it needed a valve cover gasket, and put it on when the parts come in. A week after that I smelled the exhaust again. They said the valve cover gasket wasn't any good, must've been defective from the factory. A few days later I started smelling it again. 2-3 days later, I had made a trip to Birmingham, AL 60 miles away and it took a half a tank of gas to go there and back! Which it never had done before. The dealer ended up replacing the EGR valve, accumulator modulator, and a vacuum switching valve. I haven't driven enough distance yet to check the mileage since this was done. I was getting 25-28 mpg before all this was done."

Anonymous, CA (2001 Toyota Camry CE 2.2-L 4 Cyl)"The check engine light came on, I took my car to my mechanic who said it was one of 2 problems: either the canister or another internal issue, but only a dealer could diagnose it. My mechanic could have replaced both parts but wanted to save me some money and thought it was better to diagnose and only replace the defective part. I reluctantly took it to a dealer for diagnosis, it turned out to be the canister, and I took it back to my mechanic to fix. About a week after it was fixed, the check engine light came on again. I took it back to the dealer to diagnose again. They could not find the problem. They kept my car for almost a month, but they did give me a loaner car to use. I would call every week and was given a different story each time I called. First they said it was the wiring harness, then they said it was the canister that was replaced, then they said they were bringing in a "master mechanic" to diagnose it. The communication from the dealer was horrible or non-existent. This was, by far, the most frustrating experience I have ever had with any mechanic. Ultimately, they blamed it on the replacement canister, charged me $1300, and sent me on my way. My mechanic reimbursed me for the original repair, but we both feel that the canister was not at fault, but there is no way to know for sure. Next time, I will replace both parts and do anything in my power to avoid going to a dealership."
