Owner Reports

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Satisfaction Owner Satisfaction To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

"Sudden acceleration occasionally when moving at very slow speeds. Engine suddenly begins to race and car tries to lurch forward. Driver must quickly brake hard and throw transmission into neutral or shut off engine. Performance then returns to normal. Neither Toyota nor other good mechanics have been able to ascertain the cause of problem"

Anonymous, TX (2005 Toyota Camry LE 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Problem is sudden engine acceleration believed caused by computer (electronic throttle). At low speed (under 10mph) with transmission in gear engine will suddenly begin racing and try to propel the car forward or back (depending on transmission setting). To relieve the problem driver must brake hard and quickly put transmission in neutral. Engine will race for a few seconds, then return to idle. Problem was presented to Toyota dealer (Molle Toyota) in Kansas City area in November 2012 but they could not find any problem because it was not happening at the time. They said there was no manufacturer’s warranty on our model year (2005) even though they were providing a warranty on other models or model years that had a similar problem with sudden acceleration. Car was also taken to two other repair shops for analysis of problem, but neither could solve it. It still happens intermittently a couple of times per month. We have just learned to live with it even though it is a safety concern. We do not feel we could sell or trade the car without disclosing this problem, which probably makes the car unsaleable. Following are excerpts from government reports issued in 2011 in which they tested a 2005 Toyota for the same problems we are experiencing. From NHTSA report, “Technical Assessment of Toyota Electronic Throttle Control Systems” (February 2011), executive summary, page vi footnote 1: Footnote 1. In this report, “unintended acceleration” refers to the occurrence of any degree of acceleration that the vehicle driver did not purposely cause to occur. Contrast this with the term “sudden acceleration incident,” which refers to “unintended, unexpected, high-power accelerations from a stationary position or a very low initial speed accompanied by an apparent loss of braking effectiveness.” From companion NASA report “Technical Support to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on the Reported Toyota Motor Corporation Unintended Acceleration Investigation” (January 18, 2011), executive summary, page 15 of 179: “Driver defenses against UAs (unintended accelerations) in ETCS-i (Electronic Throttle Control System-intelligent) vehicles are similar to those in vehicles with mechanical throttles: apply brakes, shift to neutral, or turn the ignition off.” In neither of these NHTSA or NASA investigations could the agencies find the cause of the many reported instances of unintended acceleration in Toyota cars. They used the 2005 Camry as their test vehicle."

"CD player quit reading disc"

John L., VA (2005 Toyota Camry LE 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"I cannot say 100% that the CD player stopped accepting discs due to my laptop bumping into the array of audio control buttons with engine running while parked. I was using my laptop and in lifting it from center console it bumped the audio control buttons-after that I was unable to get a disc to load and play. It will intake disc(single disc player)but in load mode it remains in such for 10 seconds or so and ejects as always did normally. Radio-AM/FM operable. Was in winter and unit always very hot when front vents or defrost vents in use. Online forums have some of same but inconclusive and no help. I purchased the Camry in May of 2015(150K) and the disc player worked fine until Feb/Mar 0f 2018(180K)."
