The Camry proved capable, quiet and well rounded in all test versions, but not exciting to drive. Handling is sound, though not sporty. Ride quality is comfortable and the interior is roomy. While all powertrains are refined and economical, the V6 XLE is very quick and the Hybrid combines good performance with great fuel economy.

What Owners Say

"Great get up and go."

Loraine C., MN (2009 Toyota Camry)

"The V-6 is very quiet, smooth and powerful and the 6-speed shiftable auto transmission very good in the mountain driving I do. The handling got much improved after I replaced the OEM tires."

Anonymous, AZ (2009 Toyota Camry)

"The handling in this car has always been loose and poor. It is hard to make it go straight. Drifts around the road. Since new it's been this way."

Anonymous, GA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Great car, Very responsive."

Laurence M., SC (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Decent acceleration and handling"

Ronald R., OR (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Quick response, especially from a four cylinder motor. Handles well."

John N., NJ (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Good power and handling"

Lou R., CA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"It is only a 4 cylinder but has plenty of pickup that makes it fun to drive."

Ben N., TX (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Acceleration on the 4 cylinder Camry is adequate. It may feel a litle underpowered on steep inclines. This Camry is easy to drive and does well in town or on Highway conditions."

Joshua P., OR (2009 Toyota Camry)

"My husband commutes during rush hour. He is an aggressive driver who darts from lane to lane, accelerating and decelerating erratically. The Camry drives wonderfully during these trying conditions. The one problem handling is backing up--the back window is too small to see well."

Jean D., NJ (2009 Toyota Camry)

"The Camry four is surprisingly responsive."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Performs well."

Anonymous, WI (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Wonderful car! Has as much acceleration as we need and handles great. Great overall car."

Robert M., CA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Good - acceleration slightly more than adequate for 4 cylinder. Good - handling on all surfaces wet or dry"

Michael P., OH (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Even in heavy snow, the Camry handles well. It's definitely not a feedback-intensive driving experience, but for longer rides that is a plus."

Jeff P., OH (2009 Toyota Camry)

"It is very easy to drive. It handles well, turns well and has good acceleration when you want it."

Anonymous, OH (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Acceleration is excellent for a 4 cylinder engine and handling is fine."

Thomas A., FL (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Good acceleration while handling is not so good"

Anonymous, OH (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Hesitates sometime during acceleration"

Anonymous, GA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Moves well, handles beautifully and is a joy to ride in and to drive. Would love to be able to buy again."

Anonymous, MI (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Drives, rides, and handles surprisingly well."

BRIAN E., IN (2009 Toyota Camry)

"I dinged the 2009 Camry driving by one point because 1) it revs too high at idle and, after being reset by the dealer, reverted to the same problem; and 2) it has significantly more rolling resistance than my 2002 Camry. Both of these factors may help explain why it gets several less mpg than the 2002 Camry."

MARK W., CA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"There is a lot of road noise which drowns out the stereo system. Also, I'm not crazy about the car's transmission. The car I had before was a 6 cyl. GM, and you could tap the accelerator and the car would glide. This car actually seems to downshift itself if I take my foot off the gas. I understand that it's probably a fuel-saving thing that was built into the car, but it sometimes makes for an uncomfortable driving experience. Also, the head restraint is never in a comfortable position so that"

ROCHELLE R., PA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"I don't like the acceleration on the 2009 Camry. Very poor. Sluggish. Step on accelerator and nothing happens for 2-3 seconds then there is a sudden burst of energy. I would consider this Camry actually dangerous if you don't know how it reacts when you want to accelerate. It is a 4 cylinder but it is inferior to other 4 cylinder cars I have owned or rented. Everything else abut the car is good, as with all Camrys. I did have to replace the water pump but that was predicted in your reports"

Anonymous, IL (2009 Toyota Camry)

"I found the acceleration quiet and quick for this size of car"

STIRLING Y., YT (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Acceleration is below expectations. The car feels too light and has a noisy ride."

LAWRENCE G., FL (2009 Toyota Camry)

"the car has a dead spot when stepping on the gas peddle. The idle is very high when starting the car..I think it is dangerously high until the car warms up.The windshield visor is broken and drops down-very dangerous . This seems to be a general problem with camrys for a few years. They refuse to replace it.It is a safety problem. Shame on them."

Anonymous, NJ (2009 Toyota Camry)

"There have been trips where we have driven this are almost 3500 miles in just 10 days. For the past year the freeway mpg has averaged 32.5 mpg - with the AC on. The 4cyl has lots of pep and has always been quick to deal with merging zones as well as driving up steep inclines."

WILLIAM G., FL (2009 Toyota Camry)

"The engine makes a loud reving noise when trying to accelerate quickly and is slow and hesitating response when you step on the gas peddle. When you drive another car and then this one you notice the steering has a lot of play in it."

Anonymous, GA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Handles well and has excellent acceleration"

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"have never liked the brakes. They feel sluggish and not as responsive as I would like"

Anonymous, IL (2009 Toyota Camry)

"It is a nice drive on high ways, handles well"

FLEMMING V., NY (2009 Toyota Camry)

"The turning radius is small and makes driving much easier. Also, Acceleration is fantastic. I can rely on moving into the line of traffic as quickly as is necessary, every time."

CYNTHIA K., NH (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Acceleration is very nice, and handling is very soft (not sporty)."

Anonymous, PA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Drives well and=d accelerates well on highway"

Anonymous, NY (2009 Toyota Camry)

"The car does not handle well on uneven roads. It also tends to be adversely affected by side winds more than it should. I had the alignment checked by the dealer, but all they did was make the steering stiffer, which lasted only a few weeks.Birchwood Toyota Winnipeg."

Anonymous, MB (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Reliable Would not consider changing to an other type of a car"

Anonymous, NY (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Cruise control surges beyond set limit very quickly when it returns from lower speed. You didn't ask but jack and tire changing system is very poorly designed and very dangerous."

GARY M., VA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"It has plenty of pep, seems tight still, corners well and gets good gas economy for a non-hybrid vehicle."

WARREN J., MN (2009 Toyota Camry)

"I NOTICED HOW FAST THE CAR ACCELERATED AND HOW HARD IT WAS TO HANDLE WHEN I HAD A RUNAWAY FLOORMAT ISSUE. VERY DIFFICULT TO GET THE CAR STOPPED WHILE TRYING TO SHUT OFF THE PUSH BUTTON IGNITION SWITHC AND AVOIDING A CRASH. I HATE THE PUSH BUTTON SYSTEM, HARD TO SHUT OFF THE CAR WHEN PUNCHING THE BUTTON REPEATEDLY, WHICH IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN IN THE MIDDLE OF A CRISIS. I CAN SAY THE CAR HAS PLENTLY OF POWER, BUT AT THAT POINT I WISHED IT HAD A PUNY 4 CYLINDER. IT WAS A MURPHYS LAW SEQUENCE, WH"

WAYNE K., CA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"I don't drive very far but I like the way the Camry handles. The acceleration is very good and it gets me to where I want to go."

Anonymous, OH (2009 Toyota Camry)

"I despise the acceleration trait as it is almost always jerky from a standing start and sometimes from just increasing my speed. It is particularly difficult to make maneuvers requiring just slight acceleration such a parking or backing up. I've been told that it's a software problem for which there is no fix and that it is working as designed, both of which are unacceptable."

WAYNE S., IN (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Handles very easily."

SALLY C., NJ (2009 Toyota Camry)

"it is fine"

Anonymous, MA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Camry has the best combination of smooth ride, economical operation, roominess and reliability of any mid size car, and it is quieter than the rest while having a better ride."

DALE P., KS (2009 Toyota Camry)

"The ability to merge into traffic due to the acceleration is something I use often."

WILLIAM L., IL (2009 Toyota Camry)

"I had a 1995 Camry for years and it handled like a dream. It was a joy to drive. The 2009 Camry is...fine. I guess. I wouldn't buy it again if I had a time machine. Of course, if I had a time machine I would using a flying car because I would go back in time and make sure they were invented...duh."

Brian E., IN (2009 Toyota Camry)

"From the beginning, the steering has not been good at self correcting. I took it to the dealer who realigned it. But that didn't correct the problem. I've learned to take adjust to the problem when I drive."

Anonymous, ON (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Acceleration is good, but not sporty. I didn't buy a hybrid for speed. I really like the handling. It's very easy to drive. The mileage has gone down in recent months mainly due to my new tires that are not the expensive low rolling resistance tires."

Anonymous, LA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Well designed suspension"

Anonymous, ON (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Tremendous acceleration with the V6 engine, smooth transmission shifts easily, handling is excellent at all speeds and does well in mountain driving, taking turns easily and effortlessly accelerating up hills when needed. My only real complaint is road noise infiltrating the cab. Supposedly the new Camrys are much better and I am considering a new one if I can get past the what I consider ugly front end styling."

Edmund H., WA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Plenty of power when accelerating; handles well in all types of weather and conditions."

Anonymous, PA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"6 cylinder good pick-up."

Mackenzie-Tim P., WI (2009 Toyota Camry)

"The 2009 Camry Hybrid has been a joy to drive. Unbelievable acceleration and braking on demand. The turning radius is a bit "wide" for my liking and the steering "feel" is a bit lousy-goosy. Cabin noise was ultra quiet until I "upgraded" to performance all-seasons that had been top rated by CR for rain traction. I got the traction all right, and hear every inch of in loudly."

Duncan M., BC (2009 Toyota Camry)

"lots of power, and grips the road nicely"

Julie H., ON (2009 Toyota Camry)

Robert D., PA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"handles well"

Joe-Pam H., NE (2009 Toyota Camry)

"The car is a big marshmallow. While comfortable and smooth in its driving, acceleration is sluggish, and handling, while solid, is slow, with a wide turning radius. In my opinion, this is due to both the fact that the car is a full-size sedan and the added weight of the battery in the trunk just behind the passenger bench seats. While acceleration is acceptable, it does seem to struggle to high speeds from a full stop, since the smaller sized main engine is not a beast at providing torque. Still, for calm drivers willing to avoid risking tickets with speeds or maneuvers, it's a solid automobile providing a smooth and comfortable ride."

What Owners Say

"Solid and dependable car that runs well and quietly on long trips. I like the electric controlled adjustments of the driver's seat. The interior color of a neutral grey/beige are nicer than a darker color. Both for looks as well as not being as hot in sunny weather."

Anonymous, PA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"I can't seem to get a clear viewing position no matter how I adjust the seats. I'm 5' 9"" so I don't think that should happen."

Anonymous, SC (2009 Toyota Camry)

"The Camry is very quiet and has an excellent ride. The seats are very comfortable for me and my wife who is much shorter than me."

Anonymous, AL (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Very comfortable ride at all speeds. Some road noise due to tires and road surface and sometimes a bit objectionable. Needs more insulation, Engine noise is minimal and only noticeable during acceleration, which is pretty awesome when needed (V6 engine).. Seats are comfortable and not tiring on long trips."

Edmund H., WA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Lumbar support is great. My car seat is the most comfortable place for me to sit."

Anonymous, IN (2009 Toyota Camry)

"In my experience Toyota Camries eventually get "the squats" where their suspension starts sagging and the car sinks lower and lower. This is the case with this 2009, as it was with our 1999. Also, the ride has lots of front suspension noise and the suspension is very loose."

Anonymous, WI (2009 Toyota Camry)

"The Camry is a bit too small for my comfort. I am 6'2" and I am a bit cramped while sitting in the drivers seat. It seems to have gotten worse as I have aged. I purchased this vehicle mainly for my wife to drive."

Ron C., NC (2009 Toyota Camry)

"This is the fourth Camry we have purchased over these past16 years. Overall quality has continued to diminish with Camry's. We will no longer consider a Camry for future purchase"

MAMIE L., TX (2009 Toyota Camry)

"The one complaint I have about my Camry is the seat belt; I hate the way the belt hits my neck area when in use, and I cannot adjust it with the levers. It has been suggested that I hook up an "S" lever to keep it away from my neck. I have to drive with my left hand holding the seat belt away from my throat and it's very irritating. If the next car I buy has the same problem, I will not get it. I will try all other models until one fits correctly."

Anonymous, MA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"The climate control is very basic, i.e., a manual system. However, it has functioned flawlessly over the seven years I've owned he car. The A/C puts out a frigid blast of air that quickly cools the interior even through the sweltering south Florida summer weather."

The style (since it was the same for many years) has kept a good look to i.t The only problem was over the years the dashboard on top got very sticky. It'll last us probably another 2-3 years."

Jan J., FL (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Have driven my Camry for 9+ years & still don’t feel the need to replace it. It still looks, drives & rides great! Required maintenance has been performed on schedule. The only thing I’ve replaced are the headlights as originals became cloudy (to be expected). Value doesn’t get much better than that!"

"Ownership about 10 years. Minimal repair required. My next car will be a Camry."

"No problems. After 9 nine years still runs good. Have only gotten regular scheduled maintence, oil change, tire rotation, etc."

Peggy B., IL (2009 Toyota Camry)

What Owners Say

"Although styling is a subjective issue, I believe the Camry has clean and modern lines that still look current and not dated even though Toyota has released two different updates from my model. I prefer its understated looks to those of the model that followed it."

JORGE S., FL (2009 Toyota Camry)

"It looks good except when the wheel covers come off which they often do. As I am now paying attention to this I see many of the same year +/- cars without hubcaps."

Anonymous, WA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Excellent styling"

ALBERTO D., ON (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Nice car to look at and drives very well."

SALLY C., NJ (2009 Toyota Camry)

"This particular model is the ugliest of the Camry line. The earlier and later models have much sleeker styling. (Bumpy headlamps, what were they thinking.)"

CHRIS H., MA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"people comment on the looks of the vehicle"

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Defective and melting dashboard has been an issue, Toyota dealer taking nearly a year to receive parts and fix."

Anonymous, FL (2009 Toyota Camry)

"The car is comfortable but beige interior always looks dirty. Getting accessories like seat covers and floor mats difficult and expensive. The design of the trunk area makes seeing when backing up difficult to impossible and this model has not backup camera system."

Anonymous, GA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"the styling"

DORISE H., VA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"looks good and in style with newer cars"

Anonymous, WI (2009 Toyota Camry)

"Unless the styling happens to be particularly good or bad, it's just not that important to me. That's why I'm neither satisfied nor dissatisfied."

MARK W., CA (2009 Toyota Camry)

"I like the front grill and overall smooth lines."
