Combining the practicality and frugal fuel economy compact-sedan buyers want with more interior room, upgraded amenities, and a sorely needed shot of style, this generation Corolla is a reasonable alternative to a midsized sedan. Slightly larger than the outgoing model, Corolla has a surprisingly spacious rear seat with ample leg room. Despite the bump in size, the car remains small enough for easy maneuvering and parking.

Display screen freezes up

"The entire radio/gps screen froze and was replaced by Toyota at no cost to us"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Toyota Corolla S 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"When switching between channels, the display would freeze and remain on the current station. Sometimes the station would catch up to the selected and other times I would have to reset the radio by restarting the vehicle. Then all's good until the next time, which isn't all that often."

Michael B., CA (2014 Toyota Corolla S 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"I am unable to access the bottom of the screen. Therefore, I am unable to pair my new phone with the bluetooth system, and unable to scan the radio and other functions."

Jane L., TX (2014 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Radio balancing as well as scanning functions would not work. Toyota had a recall bullentin about this problem. The dealer tried a software fix, did not work. Ended up replacing the whole radio and display assembly, under warranty. This problem accured just before the warranty expired."

Kenneth S., FL (2014 Toyota Corolla LE Eco 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen goes blank

"The display screen died after only two and a half years. Toyota paid to replace it"

Linda P., CA (2014 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The phone is in an out of the Entune system"

B K., CA (2014 Toyota Corolla S 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The infotainment display is used for Bluetooth phone pairing. Display calibration has drifted, making pairing a new phone impossible. The radio is also affected. It is apparently a known and common problem with this model, but Toyota refuses to take responsibility. From on-line sources, a new infotainment system would be needed at a cost of about $1,000. I am very unhappy with Toyota."

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"the 1st leak occurred in the fall of 2017. The water had risen above the mats in the front & back of the passenger side of the car. Was told it was caused by a leak in the sun roof because they found part of the tubing plugged. In February 2018, found the floor flooded again in the same location. This time they did not find the tubing in the sun roof plugged so they had to do thorough investigation. They even brought in a leak specialist to determine the problem. Found out the leaking was caused by a defective vapour barrier in the passenger door. Seats had to be removed and carpet pulled up so the car could be thoroughly dried (and ozoned) since the car was essentially wet for over 4 months."

Headlights

"I want my sealed beam head lights back! THESE "NEW" BLUE-WHITE LITES DO NOT LIGHT-UP THE ROAD ENOUGH. Plus there is a dark horizontal bar out in front of you that annoyingly bounces up & down as you go over uneven pavement. It is very distracting"

Anonymous, NC (2014 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Headlights are different from sealed beams and it took some adjustment in my driving habits to see properly. The dealer went out of his way to get me properly orientated. I'm fine with the lights now!"

Anonymous, MD (2014 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Headlights will not stay on high"

Stephen A., AR (2014 Toyota Corolla S 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"I had one low beam headlight burned out. The dealer was busy, so I left it with an independent place, someone I trusted. I thought it would be a simple replacement of a bulb. After about an hour they called to say it was a bigger deal than they thought. They needed to remove the bumper to get at the headlight assembly, and that the low beam bulb part was sealed (but not the high beam or turn signal bulbs). I told them to stop and that I would come over. Meanwhile I called the mechanic who did all my cars for 25+ years when I lived in N.H. 4 years ago. I also called the dealer where I bought the car. They all thought it should be a simple swap of a bulb. The mechanic admitted that the car was actually too new, and that he hadn't yet needed to replace a low beam on a 2014 Corolla. At the dealer I spoke to someone who called down to the service department, but it seemed to be a perfunctory answer. Tell him it's about $35 dollars. Then I looked online, and found many references to it being a new thing with Corollas, and it did require an entire replacement of the whole part -- both headlights, parking lights, and turn signal lights. So even though some people reported being able to hack the old part open and replace the bulb, and glue the hacked back of the low beam portion back together, I decided to pay what they asked. It turned out to be close to $700. I did get the old part from the mechanic, and I couldn't see any way to exchange the low beam bulb without cutting plastic with a saw of some type. I'm very disappointed with Toyota for this. I have owned several Toyotas previously and always had a respect for their engineering."

Richard S., MO (2014 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"From day one the LED headlights in this car have been terrible; they don't illuminate properly, and the glare angers drivers coming from the opposite direction. Toyota has offered no remedy for the problem. I'll never buy another car that doesn't have an IIHS good rating on its headlights."

Thomas D., NY (2014 Toyota Corolla LE Eco 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"I went to an independent repair company to have them replace my low beam headlight. I have owned other Corollas, and assumed it would be an easy fix -- possibly $75 to $100. Instead I was told that the bumper had to be partially removed, and an entire headlight assembly needed to be installed -- the headlight unit was sealed and the bulb was not independently removable. I checked with the dealer where I bought it (in New Hampshire), they said it was an easy fix. I checked with the mechanic who serviced all my cars in N.H. for more than 20 years, someone whose answer I trust. He said my car was so new that he'd never had to fix a headlight. Finally after a lot of checking on the phone and online and with the local repair shop, I decided to let them go ahead. It was over $600. I had them give me the old part, and sure enough I could see how it would be easy to switch a high beam bulb, but the low beam bulb definitely looks sealed in behind a very thick magnifying glass which sits in front of the bulb cavity. It would be possible to cut the plastic and maybe replace the bulb, and then re-glue the magnifying lens back in place, and some online comments indicated that owners had done that. It also appeared that perhaps the headlights varied in different parts of the country. In the end I decided to let the repair shop go ahead, after all they already had my bumper off. I felt it was a very bad design on Toyota's part, and it seemed like the dealers (local and back in N.H.) were giving me an answer based on general knowledge of older Corollas and not on my model 2014. So is that reasonable? -- $600 divided by 5 years of use is $120 per year. This is about the only repair I ever have needed other than tires and oil changes."

Anonymous, MO (2014 Toyota Corolla LE Eco 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The LED headlights are horrendous. They do not sufficiently light the road, but oncoming drivers think your brights are on, so they flash or hold their brights. Bulbs cannot be replaced; you must buy the entire lighting unit--over $700. The Toyota dealer has offered no remedy for the problem, even as it acknowledges it. Otherwise, the 2014 LE Eco is a great car. But the headlight problem is a safety issue. Therefore, I answered that I would not likely buy the car again. In fact, I won't buy any other Toyota if similar LED headlights are installed . . . and I'm a lifetime Corolla owner. Too bad. I'm deeply disappointed by the company."
