2010 Toyota Highlander Reliability - Consumer Reports
The Toyota Highlander scores high for its refinement, quiet interior, ride comfort, power, fuel economy, and flexible and roomy second-row seat. It's one of our top-scoring three-row SUVs, but it is not without its drawbacks. The third-row seat is tight. And while the handling is secure, it's not very agile.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2021 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

"All the things that I clicked were related to ONE issue. They all went out at one time when the battery failed. AAA replaced the battery but these items were permanently affected. After about 3 weeks, all of a sudden the whole system booted up again. This after a trip to the dealer where repair/replacement would have been $2300, which we declined to do. My husband went to Best Buy to see if there was after market repair available and the answer was no. We were surprised and happy to discover it"

B B., CT (2010 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The LCD display occasionally malfunctions"

Anonymous, NC (2010 Toyota Highlander 3.5-L V6)

"This is the second radio I have had installed by the dealership. Both this one, and the original, both experienced the same problem. The display goes "crazy" and looks like a row of triangles not showing the stations. The player will randomly eject the cd"

Anonymous, FL (2010 Toyota Highlander Base 3.5-L V6)

"There seems to be an electrical short with the radio. Sometimes it won’t turn on, sometimes it turns on and we can’t adjust the volume or the station. There are numerous times where the display is jibberish or so light that we can’t read the information for the volume or station letters. This is the second radio since the first one was just as bad but was still in the warranty period so it was replaced for nothing. Toyota wants to charge us over $500 for a new one. We plan on getting rid of the car shortly so we can live with the annoyances for the next few months."

"Sunroof drains to area in front cowl, then is supposed to drain to bottom frame member outlet. Problem has occurred 3 times that cowl drain clogs and floods floors. My problem is on driver side. Definite design defect. Toyota does not have a TSB fix, or confirms problem. Understand this problem exists Highlander 2008-2012 models. Dealer has been very responsive to try and correct. Tailgate, hatch or trunk

"Fixed under old recall"

Anonymous, TX (2010 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The lift gate stopped working. Toyota covered the repair under special expended warranty (not sompthing I paid for, it was not called a recall but that was the effect."

Anonymous, CO (2010 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The tailgate alarm would indicate it was opened when it was not. Extremely annoying. The sensor is built into the latch mechanism and replacement would be around $500. I saw on YouTube that this is a common problem on this make and model. One YouTube fix included cutting the sensor electrical wire. I did that and it no longer is a problem. The automatic hatch open still works. The cut wire was only the sensor circuit."

Anonymous, AZ (2010 Toyota Highlander Base 3.5-L V6)

"The power lift gate arm has detached twice due to a stripped male and female threads at the point it attaches to the gate. There seems to be no good way to replace/repair the nut welded to the interior of the gate body. I will likelly have to have it"

Phillip M., IA (2010 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Rear hatch stuck. After opened by dealer the power lift gate no longer works and told it would require replacing entire lift gate at over $1400"

Blake B., OK (2010 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Power tailgate lift stopped working, initially told it was not covered under warranty and would cost around 3 to 4 thousand dollars. After complaint to Toyota customer service, repaired for free"

Lowell B., MN (2010 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Initially we had to have the rubber gasket around the opening firmly glued in place. It would continually unattached itself. Then the tailgate would not close. Anonymous, CT (2010 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

Mark D., CO (2010 Toyota Highlander SE 3.5-L V6)

"I had an incidence of unintended acceleration (UA), while stopped at a stop light with a brake pedal pressed, the throttle opened wide. Car started moving forward in spite of having the brake fully pressed. Threw shifter into park, turned off ignition. Car was towed to local Toyota dealer where car was purchased used three months earlier. Computer scan showed nothing wrong. Tried to get dealer to fix problem, he said there was no problem according to the computer, he would not know what to fix. Contacted Toyota HQ, got the same response, asked them to buy back the car, they turned down my request. Went on internet, found lots of information on UA, this is a real problem, Toyota has not admitted it fully. Am probably going to fix what is most likely wrong, throttle body and ECM or Electronic throttle control. Got this information from an independent mechanic and from Toyota technicians, service manager was not around. However, asked service manager later to put this in writing, i.e, I had fixed what most likely caused the UA. he told me mis-understood the technician. I have great concerns about reselling vehicle from a liability standpoint, even though I plan to fully disclose entire situation and fix the recommended parts first. Only other option is to fix vehicle and then sell back to Toyota dealer at a significant dollar loss. This option provides considerably more liability protection."

If the FFC is damaged, connectivity to the driver's air bag module could be lost and the air bag deactivated. The failure of the driver's air bag to deploy in the event of a crash that typically necessitates deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver.
Summary:

In the affected vehicles, the steering column assembly contains electrical connections to the driver's airbag module housed in a spiral cable assembly, which includes a Flexible Flat Cable (FFC). Toyota will mail owners a second letter when remedy parts are available.
