Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2014 Toyota Highlander owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Display screen difficult to see

"When driving during the day you can't hardly see the screen. Also entering address in the screen sometimes is difficult. Also the driving directions are backward the is showing to the left when is supposed to show the right"

Anonymous, FL (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited)

"The back-up camera display feature is great, when it works! However, it is impossible to use on sunny days. There is a bright glare that renders it unUSble. Had I realized this prior to purchasing the SUV, I would have bought another brand,"

Linda S., NJ (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Design angle and lack of sunscreen around display screen makes it difficult to see during bright daylight"

Maynard W., MN (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"High glare, poor location (too low & too large), almost impossible to see with polarized sunglasses"

Jeff P., ON (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Difficult to see in bright daylight"

Anonymous, OH (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Bright light shinning onto the dash make it nearly impossible to view the display"

Katherine H., AZ (2014 Toyota Highlander LE Plus 3.5-L V6)
Display screen freezes up

"It blinks on and off then goes blank and reboots"

Anonymous, OH (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Unit replaced by Toyota"

Anonymous, VA (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"the screen freezes when entering an address"

Anonymous, FL (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited)

"The entire radio/display unit had to be replaced because it would randomly freeze and stop working; it would reboot itself but it was happening more and more frequently"

Anonymous, MN (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Screen locked up"

Anonymous, FL (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"On trips of varying lengths, the entune system (nav, radio, etc) completely freezes and has to be manually reset by holding power for 30 seconds. If using navigation, have to pull over to reprogram."

Anonymous, PA (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The display freezes and none of the electronics associated with that system worked. It was a known problem per the mechanic. This was replaced."

Anonymous, WA (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"This happens rarely, but when it does nothing is operable (radio, screen map, GPS system. Service seems to return after the engine has been turned off and restarted."

Anonymous, OH (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Screen freezes up unable to operate, sometimes comes right back on ,if you’re using g p s you might have to stop and turn off engine"

Frank T., CT (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"At no particular interval, the entire dash computer system first freezes up, then randomly shuts itself down and restarts. If you have a gps route programmed in you have to reset it up. You may or may not have to reprogram the audio source."

Anonymous, NC (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The display would freeze after approximately 15 minutes of driving. If I left it alone for a few more minutes, the Entune system would reboot. Sometime it froze enough that I had to manually reboot it using the on/off knob because it couldn't reboot itself. I fixed it when I found Toyota's software update for the Entune system and applied it. It is free and requires a 2GB USB drive that is connected to the vehicle's USB port. Now the panel and the rest of the Entune system is rock-stable."

Andrew B., IL (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"It freezes up and has to reboot two or three times and hour"

Anonymous, TX (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"At random moments, thew screen freezes. Power button, volume controls, etc. all stay at the last settings. The only way to get it to stop is to hold the power button for ~5s or turn off the engine. Sometimes it happens once/wk. Sometimes it happens once/3mo. Never know when it's going to happen and nothing specific seems to trigger it."

Jonathan S., MD (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Screen freezes. Car restart usually fixes. Supremely annoying."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Toyota Highlander)

"Display screen suddenly freezes. Happens frequently even after update. On long trips it freezes while suing GPS which can potentially lead to getting lost using it"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"At random, the display screen freezes, no controls work, and usually within a couple of minutes the whole radio/in-dash system reboots"

Scott S., ON (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Screen freezes and then reboots losing some settings"

Peter O., CO (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Happens when I am trying to pair up a phone and/or display the contact list from the phone. Screen just will not display the options I need for what I'm trying to do. Will just sit there in this state for a period of time, then sometimes it becomes active again"

Alfred N., OH (2014 Toyota Highlander LE Plus 3.5-L V6)

"GPS/display randomly freezes up and then resets. I believe this usually happens when connected to blutooth or using the GPS functionality"

Anonymous, PA (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Display screen, including nav system and radio, was stuck in a reboot loop"

Anonymous, PA (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"the navigation system or radio display would freeze up and stop working. Sometimes it would crash and restart by itself. Then it began to do it more frequently and we had to turn the car off and back on to make it work again. The entire radio system was later replaced by Toyota as it was under warranty"

Ramon M., FL (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Navigation system unusable due to constant software issues. Dealer has updated system multiple times"

Anonymous, VT (2014 Toyota Highlander LE Plus 3.5-L V6)

Clyde R., VA (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"gps stops working usually when the weather is warm"

Anonymous, PA (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"It sometimes freezes and the only way to restart it is shut the car down and restart it. Aldo it's very difficult to change the nav volume which is very loud. My cell phone nav is better than the car's. Finally the angle of the screen makes it almost impossible to read during the day in sunlight. The screen should be hooded to reduce ambient light and turned slightly towards the driver for better vid"

Anonymous, CT (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"You touch the screen and sometimes nothing happens"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Toyota Highlander 3.5-L V6)

Sandra P., SC (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Display screen would freeze up when using Navigation system even if not on Navigation screen. I was able to get this fixed under warranty at the dealership as it was a known problem that had a firmware update fix to it."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"This problem seems to occur in similar conditions to the display screen rebooting. While driving the GPS will freeze in position. It seems to resolve itself by leaving the GPS and resetting the destination."

Anonymous, IL (2014 Toyota Highlander LE 3.5-L V6)

"The display screen freezes at random times. It's very inconvenient and sometimes happens when using the GPS, as well as when listening to music."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"I took my car to a professional who said that the issue was not in the electronics but rather that the battery must have gotten low at some point. I have had the problems again on a trip when the battery was well charged because of trip driving. I also had the battery checked and it is strong. This issue with freezing involves the radio, gps, CD player; all aspects of the screen, freeze, or go blank, or go to a screen that says my engine needs service."

A O., FL (2014 Toyota Highlander LE 3.5-L V6)

"I was told by the dealer that 2014 Highlanders have this issue due to the amount of data transferred via Bluetooth. I was also told subsequent model years corrected the problem. This is my only issue with this vehicle."

"System shuts down and reboots while driving down the road. It has happened 20 times in the last year"

Anonymous, SC (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"This happens without warning almost every time the car is driven. On long trips it happens several times a day. It always restarts itself but when it resumes all navigation data for the trip is lost. I believe this to be an overheating problem. The problem appears to be widespread based on online complaints from other owners. Local dealer admits that they don't know how to fix. A design issue is that the display allows selection of 2 or 3 items at the same time to be shown [nav, weather, fuel economy, etc.]. I want only navigation so to use the full screen but can't select a single item to be displayed. Had I known this prior to purchase, I would not have bought this vehicle. This is poor engineering."

"The old ipod I had been using for 18 months with this car suddenly refused to connect and play. I had no problem listening to it in other cars or with headphones"

Martha P., NY (2014 Toyota Highlander LE Plus 3.5-L V6)

"For a while, we had problems with the USB port in the car in that it was not recognizing the iPhone as a music device. This was an intermittent problem--sometimes it would work and other times it wouldn't. Eventually, the USB port would never recognize the iPhone. It was later replaced by Toyota as it was under warranty"

Ramon M., FL (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Very unreliable and intermittent operation, stops and drops out frequently, pairing doesn't work or is intermittent depending on device paired, am confident in using correct pairing method etc. System is more reliable when device is connected by wire (either USB or 3.5mm), but still freezes regularly. This is a major issue and reflects very poorly on Toyota that they could release the car with this system so poorly resolved. We have used very standard phones in our attempts to connect - iPhone a"

Anonymous, VA (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"I am appalled that Toyota could take this vehicle to market with a phone / music interface that basically doesn't work. We have given up on using bluetooth as it's so unreliable and usually doesn't connect at all. These services need to operate seamlessly to be of any value. We only use phones for music, by aux cable connection. We cannot connect our phones by bluetooth to make and receive calls. Even when the system occasionally worked in the past (before we gave up), it was clunky an unintuitive. I am very tech-savvy - it's not operator error."

Sheri-Nouane D., VA (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Sporadically refuses to play from my usb connected ipod at all. Gets confused as to what is actually playing, and does not update song info when the song changes."

Anonymous, (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Interface/software with the phone has never worked properly. Has caused entertainment system to lock up - we have been forced to not use the USB ports in the car or use bluetooth to pair a phone due to issues with the interface."

Hardware replacement

"I've had two problems that showed through the radio/head unit. Toyota claims unrelated. One was touch screen would freeze and reboot. Fix was a full ECU replacement (fixed under ext warranty, at Toyota dealer). Second was also my radio, happened after ECU unit replaced. It powercycles every 45-60 seconds. It connects to phone starts playing and then reboots. I can control the problem if I disable bluetooth on my phone, but I lose handsfree calling by doing so. I've been in for a software update and a replacement head unit. Neither worked (Toyota dealer service). Awaiting my second head unit, but faced extended delays (started this complaint in Dec 2019). Is it that common-place a problem that Toyota faces a worldwide back order of several months? Thank goodness under ext. warranty, otherwise I'd have to sell my vehicle to avoid the problem. Problems began about 18 months ago."

Anonymous, ON (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The Whole head unit was bad. It started slow and then just kept having problems with nav screen, Bluetooth and radio. The unit would go blank. I had it checked out several times and then finally paid to have the head unit update with a software fix for $130. This pissed me off, they told me it a common problem with the Entune system but they said it will cost you to have it updated. My wife was so pissed off we went to an AUDI dealer and test drove a Q7. We almost purchased it but decided to get one more year out of the Highlander before we trade it in. The Audi is very nice but $10 to 20000 more depending on the model. Of course we want the prestige model. The other issue which pissed me off more was having to have three of the four door actuators (door locking ) replaced. If I hadn't had an extended warranty I would have got the Audi the same day. I called Toyota USA headquarters and they listened to me and said thanks for calling. The service representative at the local dealership, where it was purchased and serviced said it's a big problem for Toyota but no recall on it!!!!"

Anonymous, TN (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Whole unit stopped working. Kept re-booting."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Display screen is touch controlled. Right after warranty expired, no longer responded to touch. Dealer replaced anyway but replacement was difficult and interior trim was damaged in the process. The new display screen worked for about 20 months and then stopped responding too touch. Dealer quoted about $800 for replacement. "Temperature caused failure of GPS/in-dash system. While this was replaced multiple times, it still occurs on occasion. Vehicle would be moving and using navigation system; temperature/humidity outside would be high and system would reboot. Did not affect vehicle operations (still driveable), but created some angst for driver as GPS/in-dash system needed back up with phone in order to prevent mis-directions while driving. Experienced it several times before dealership replaced system - and replaced system a second time, then had to retune it due to factory default needing updates. The problem resolved over a couple of months, but more importantly, the issue started in 2016. Unable to resolve it before 2019 due to transfer with military to England where Toyota does NOT honor warranty work from the US. Definitely a problem for me in England. It is now resolved, but still has the issue (rebooting of the system) much less frequently - usually once a month during extremely warm temperatures with high humidity. Still consider it an excellent vehicle. Will NOT purchase another Toyota at this time due to warranty and inability to recognize issues inherent to the system."

"After about 2 years, the rattles and squeeks have really piled up. The Toyota Highlander Limited AWD rattles and creaks like the worst cars I have owned back in the early 70's. You guys get an erection for anything Toyota, but sadly, my FIRST and LAST Toyota experience has been a nightmare of warranty repairs and worse. ALL 4 power door lock actuators failed, 1 by 1 just outside the warranty. I have NEVER had a single power door lock actuator fail with any of the dozens of cars I have owned throughout my life - - EVER! Toyota wanted $2,000 to fix them. I ended up buying parts online and fixing them all myself, but that still cost me $1,000. Toyota corporate is HORRIBLE to deal with in comparison to GM and other brands I have owned. Once you own it, these arrogant bastards in Japan will do almost nothing to help you out, even if your vehicle is JUST outside warranty. You guys need to quit hyping Toyota.... Most Toyota owners are fanboys, not unlike Apple product owners.... they generally explain away any problem instead of admitting that this brand has JUST AS MANY, if not more issues than domestics or other brands. I personally, will never buy another Toyota again.... my $46k Highlander is a piece of crap.... constructed of flimsly, cheap materials, and just doesn't have a 'solid' feel..... It is just 'ok.'"

Nicole L., VT (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The rear power tailgate started acting up shortly after the warranty expired. It would not close completely and had to be pushed manually to close. At around 48000 miles it stopped working entirely and could only be opened and closed manually at great effort since the power mechanism did not disengage when the power lift motors in the hatch struts failed. It required brute strength to open or close. Repairs included replacing the struts and motors on both sides of the tailgate and the computer module that controls them located inside the tailgate. Toyota dealership cost to repair was nearly $2000.00. I did a lot of research on this issue and it turns out it is very common problem with 2014 through 2016 Highlanders. It should have been a recall item but it wasn't. I escalated to Toyota of America and the best they would do is split the cost with me. This still cost me more than $900 for repairs on parts that should have been designed to last for the life of the vehicle and not fail shortly after the new vehicle warranty expires."

Robert J., CO (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The automatic lift does not operate reliably with key fob or by pressing lift gate buttons inside or outside the car. The lift gate will move a few inches and then stop. Then I have to press the button again. This happens one time all the way up to ten times when I try to open the lift gate."

Sue W., NV (2014 Toyota Highlander 3.5-L V6)

"The powered liftgate would intermittently fail to open fully and/or close fully. Since the vehicle was still under warranty at the time, the dealership replaced the rear hatch stays, one of the on-board computers and two power unit assemblies. There was not cost to me. Based on my research, this has been a somewhat common problem with this model of Highlander, although you have to dig a bit to find out about it. I also had to take videos of the malfunctioning tailgate and provide them to the dealer as proof of the problem so that they would repair it under warranty. So far, so good regarding the repair."

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Catalytic converter

"Loose heat shield on the converter was making a lot of noise. Dealer wanted $4,300.00 to repair it. Said the whole converter assembly came as one piece and the engine had to be dropped to install it. Took dealer 3 tries to find the problem. On the first try they said it was the water pump. So it was replaced $1,100.00 .still had noise. Second try said it was the rear exhaust, but the noise was coming from the engine. Third try found problem near exhaust manifold and quoted price. Not a happy camper, that the dealers can only replace parts instead of fixing"

Anonymous, MS (2014 Toyota Highlander LE Plus 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, CO (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"At idle, a noisy rattle was evident enough people would look at the car to see what was going on. rusted heat shield and bracket, a $280.00 fix, ugh!"

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Alignment

"I purchased this automobile used. Within six months of purchase, I had to have the alignment checked then corrected. A few months later I had to have this one again. I've never had an automobile that had to have the alignment corrected more than once over a period of several years"

Anonymous, WY (2014 Toyota Highlander)
Power steering pumps and hoses

"Started suddenly while out of town. Car would not steer. Required an extra overnight stay while it was being repaired."

Anonymous, (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)
Shocks or struts

"The left rear shock started to make squeaking noises over bumps. The dealer replaced the shock for free and problem went away"

"Shock started leaking oil so it was replaced free of charge."

Anonymous, AL (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Both rear shock absorbers made squeaking noises during the first 26000 miles. They were replaced under warranty. One of the replaced shocks failed again within 3000 miles and both rear shocks were replaced again under warranty. Both replaced shocks are now working well without noise. These are genuine Toyota shocks and vehicle has been driven gently (not at all abused) on only paved roads. We suspect they were either initially installed incorrectly or were from a defective manufacture batch"

Robert J., CO (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The vehicle was only 3 years old when I noticed one of the wheels bouncing while it was driving on the expressway. The vehicle would also lurch to one side if the suspension became unsettled while going over a bump. When I took it into the shop, they discovered that the strut had leaked much of the fluid out. I found this odd due to the age of the vehicle and the way it is driven by my wife. Once it was repaired, the difference was like night and day."

Tom M., NY (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"One rear shocks was leaking."

Richard H., NC (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Noise coming out of front left of car, worn out bearings on front right pillar, suspect driver side going as well. More noticeable after winter when salt and sand get in and cause excessive wear. Started three years ago and got worse after each winter. Repaired this spring and no issues."

Anonymous, (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)
Springs or torsion bars

"Noise at rear; they were aware of the issue but no recall on the vehicle; repair was warrenty"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)
Tire wear is uneven

"Since day one, right front tire has been wearing by the outside rim. Dealer shop has never found the problem other than saying it needs alignment. Because of this problem I've had to change tires well before the usual mileage. I suspect it is a manufacturing problem which hasn't been recognized as a recall. This has been the most annoying problem with the vehicle."

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

John H., CA (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)
Automatic climate control

"The AC in the second and third row are very poor, low power"

Anonymous, FL (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"This occurs infrequently but without warning. Vehicle cooling system turns compressor off but fan continues to run. Turning off the system manually and waiting a few seconds before manually restarting fixes this problem."

Anonymous, NC (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"In warm months when interior of vehicle gets very hot when sitting in the sun not running and you engage the Auto Climate Control and put the temperature settings to LOW to start blowing cold air right away the system blows HOT air like I had selected HIGH HEAT in stead of LOW COLD. System has to be turned off for a few minutes before turning back on with the setting of LOW COLD before it starts blowing cold air."

Condenser

"musty odor coming from a/c vents on vehicle less than 6 month old. Never had with any other vehicle. indication is EPA required coating change to condenser that causes mildew/mod build up. Toyota did not fix problem, just tried to mask odor"

Anonymous, AL (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The condenser is located under the dash. They had to completely dismantle the dash to gain access. This took almost 2 weeks to complete."

What Owners Say

4WD/AWD components

"AWD Malfunction Light came on along with the Engine Light... vehicle lost power and chugged and ran roughly."

Anonymous, MI (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"When the car had about 60,000 miles, the check engine light and check AWD system light came on. THis caused the AWD and cruise control to stop working. THe car seemed to drive. THis problem repeated itself several times. In October 2019 It became chronic and I dealt with it, I took our 2014 Highlander to Cedar Park (Texas) Toyota, and here's what their diagnosis said: "Found DTC P0012 & P0025 for cam shaft bank 1A and bank 2B stuck over retarded. Suspecting intermittent oil control valve sticking. Unable to duplicate condition." They ended up replacing bank 1 intake cam actuator oil control valve and bank 2 exhaust cam actuator oil control valve. Cost was $219.40 for parts plus labor. It came to $666.40 total. The car has been driven about 10,000 miles since the repair and the problem has not recurred. In our case, the car always drove normally except that we had the check engine light and other warnings mentioned, plus we could not use the cruise control. I always suspected it was a sensor problem and not a real problem with the engine. I think the problem was expensive to repair. THis plus the water leak in the sunroof area that has plagued this car from the beginning has caused me to lose confidence in Toyota. This will probably be the last Toyota I buy."

CV joint

"leak, repaired under warranty"

George H., WI (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Interior cover for panoramic roof is coming apart. Afraid to use it because if I open it it might not close. Repair cost is $1000. Solution - don't use it and of course don't use the sunroof either- which we never did very much. Not covered by extended warranty because it's a Trim piece not mechanical or electrical!? But if you can't use the cover then you can't use the sunroof either- which is both mechanical and electrical- BS! Specifically the cover is coming unstitched from the piece that slides in the track. Oil leak was actually a differential seal."
