What Owners Say
"The back-up camera display feature is great, when it works! However, it is impossible to use on sunny days. There is a bright glare that renders it unUSble. Had I realized this prior to purchasing the SUV, I would have bought another brand,"
Linda S., NJ (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)"Design angle and lack of sunscreen around display screen makes it difficult to see during bright daylight"
Maynard W., MN (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)"High glare, poor location (too low & too large), almost impossible to see with polarized sunglasses"
Jeff P., ON (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)"Difficult to see in bright daylight"
Anonymous, OH (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)"Bright light shinning onto the dash make it nearly impossible to view the display"
Katherine H., AZ (2014 Toyota Highlander LE Plus 3.5-L V6)"It blinks on and off then goes blank and reboots"

Frank T., CT (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)"At no particular interval, the entire dash computer system first freezes up, then randomly shuts itself down and restarts. If you have a gps route programmed in you have to reset it up. You may or may not have to reprogram the audio source."
Anonymous, NC (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)"The display would freeze after approximately 15 minutes of driving. If I left it alone for a few more minutes, the Entune system would reboot. Sometime it froze enough that I had to manually reboot it using the on/off knob because it couldn't reboot itself. I fixed it when I found Toyota's software update for the Entune system and applied it. It is free and requires a 2GB USB drive that is connected to the vehicle's USB port. Now the panel and the rest of the Entune system is rock-stable."
Andrew B., IL (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)"It freezes up and has to reboot two or three times and hour"
Anonymous, TX (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)"At random moments, thew screen freezes. Power button, volume controls, etc. all stay at the last settings. Anonymous, SC (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)"This happens without warning almost every time the car is driven. On long trips it happens several times a day. It always restarts itself but when it resumes all navigation data for the trip is lost. I believe this to be an overheating problem. The problem appears to be widespread based on online complaints from other owners. Local dealer admits that they don't know how to fix. A design issue is that the display allows selection of 2 or 3 items at the same time to be shown [nav, weather, fuel economy, etc.]. I want only navigation so to use the full screen but can't select a single item to be displayed. Had I known this prior to purchase, I would not have bought this vehicle. This is poor engineering."

It was later replaced by Toyota as it was under warranty"
Ramon M., FL (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)"Very unreliable and intermittent operation, stops and drops out frequently, pairing doesn't work or is intermittent depending on device paired, am confident in using correct pairing method etc. System is more reliable when device is connected by wire (either USB or 3.5mm), but still freezes regularly. This is a major issue and reflects very poorly on Toyota that they could release the car with this system so poorly resolved. We have used very standard phones in our attempts to connect - iPhone a"
Anonymous, VA (2014 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)"I am appalled that Toyota could take this vehicle to market with a phone / music interface that basically doesn't work. We have given up on using bluetooth as it's so unreliable and usually doesn't connect at all. These services need to operate seamlessly to be of any value. We only use phones for music, by aux cable connection. We cannot connect our phones by bluetooth to make and receive calls. Even when the system occasionally worked in the past (before we gave up), it was clunky an unintuitive. I am very tech-savvy - it's not operator error."

Anonymous, (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)"I've had two problems that showed through the radio/head unit. Toyota claims unrelated. One was touch screen would freeze and reboot. Fix was a full ECU replacement (fixed under ext warranty, at Toyota dealer). Second was also my radio, happened after ECU unit replaced. It powercycles every 45-60 seconds. It connects to phone starts playing and then reboots. I can control the problem if I disable bluetooth on my phone, but I lose handsfree calling by doing so. I've been in for a software update and a replacement head unit. Neither worked (Toyota dealer service). Awaiting my second head unit, but faced extended delays (started this complaint in Dec 2019). Is it that common-place a problem that Toyota faces a worldwide back order of several months? Thank goodness under ext. warranty, otherwise I'd have to sell my vehicle to avoid the problem. Problems began about 18 months ago."
Anonymous, ON (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)"The Whole head unit was bad. It started slow and then just kept having problems with nav screen, Bluetooth and radio. The unit would go blank. I had it checked out several times and then finally paid to have the head unit update with a software fix for $130. This pissed me off, they told me it a common problem with the Entune system but they said it will cost you to have it updated. My wife was so pissed off we went to an AUDI dealer and test drove a Q7. We almost purchased it but decided to get one more year out of the Highlander before we trade it in. The Audi is very nice but $10 to 20000 more depending on the model. Of course we want the prestige model. The other issue which pissed me off more was having to have three of the four door actuators (door locking ) replaced. If I hadn't had an extended warranty I would have got the Audi the same day. I called Toyota USA headquarters and they listened to me and said thanks for calling. The service representative at the local dealership, where it was purchased and serviced said it's a big problem for Toyota but no recall on it!!!!"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)"Display screen is touch controlled. Right after warranty expired, no longer responded to touch. Dealer replaced anyway but replacement was difficult and interior trim was damaged in the process. The new display screen worked for about 20 months and then stopped responding too touch. Dealer quoted about $800 for replacement. Not worth the money if my car is going to get further damaged in the repair process and no guarantee the new one will work more than a year or so. We have work around we've figured out but it's a hassle to be able to use all of the bells & whistles we purchased."

Vehicle would be moving and using navigation system; temperature/humidity outside would be high and system would reboot. Did not affect vehicle operations (still driveable), but created some angst for driver as GPS/in-dash system needed back up with phone in order to prevent mis-directions while driving. Experienced it several times before dealership replaced system - and replaced system a second time, then had to retune it due to factory default needing updates. The problem resolved over a couple of months, but more importantly, the issue started in 2016. Unable to resolve it before 2019 due to transfer with military to England where Toyota does NOT honor warranty work from the US. Definitely a problem for me in England. It is now resolved, but still has the issue (rebooting of the system) much less frequently - usually once a month during extremely warm temperatures with high humidity. Still consider it an excellent vehicle. Will NOT purchase another Toyota at this time due to warranty and inability to recognize issues inherent to the system."
