The Matrix offered a lot of room and many of the virtues of an SUV, such as a little higher driving position, easy access, and optional AWD. You'll find a compliant ride, fairly nimble handling, and effective brakes. Notable shortcomings are a flawed driving position and a noisy engine. Overall, the Matrix offered a good and practical alternative to a small SUV. The Pontiac Vibe is essentially the same car.

    Muffler

"While I realize that this car is 12 years old the pipe and muffler failure was dramatic and cost $600 to fix. Technically it could have been driven, but a noise violation ticket was a possibility."

David L., ON (2005 Toyota Matrix Standard 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Rusted out. The car is 13 yrs old. Other than this problem. NO MAJOR problems in the last 13yrs. I LOVE this car"

"The light issue popped up about three years after purchase. It is intermittent and continues to this day."

Mark H., CA (2005 Toyota Matrix XR 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Intermittent light on. Dealer unable to determine cause."

Anonymous, NJ (2005 Toyota Matrix XR 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Kept on going on and off"

Anonymous, AB (2005 Toyota Matrix 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Light comes on in low temp (below 32F) and probably higher humidity situations. Intermittent fault, and I have previously taken car into dealer. I will take it in again, as the Takata airbag issue is a concern."

David L., ON (2005 Toyota Matrix Standard 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"This was all the hassle related to the Takata airbag ignitors. These recalls require interaction with the dealer network - always a complication."

Mark B., AB (2005 Toyota Matrix Standard 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"When Takata air bags were changed, the light came on. The car dealer said that was the spiral or spring was damaged due to the change of air bags on the driver's side. Now I do not have good and functioning air bag in case of an accident. :("

Irmgard G., PR (2005 Toyota Matrix Standard 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

    "Taketa air bag issue"

Anonymous, NC (2005 Toyota Matrix XR 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Car has two air bag related problems that Toyota knows about 1) the airbag system gets it's power from the clock which has bad solder joints. I fixed mine by reheating all of the solder joints. 2) I've become good at replacing clock springs I buy them online and they last for a while then I replace them again. It's not that hard but Toyota should be ashamed, again, they know about the problem."

Ron M., IN (2005 Toyota Matrix XR 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
    Pipes

"Exhaust pipe system had corroded to point that electronic safeguards in ignition system would not allow car to start it run. Assume due to lack of back pressure. Had to tow vehicle to a shop to install new exhaust system. Utilized aftermarket garage to replace system. OEM (Toyota) estimate for job was in the $3000-$4000 range. Aftermarket was able to do job for less than $500. Aftermarket work was more than adequate."

Anonymous, KS (2005 Toyota Matrix Standard 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Cyndee W., PA (2005 Toyota Matrix XR 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Exhaust pipe joint over the axle rusted and broke. Had to be replaced with aftermarket one"

Jordan J., WI (2005 Toyota Matrix XR 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Front exhaust pipe failed / rusted out"

Anonymous, KY (2005 Toyota Matrix Standard 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, MB (2005 Toyota Matrix XR 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"I had lived in Maine until 2011 and the undercarriage was exposed to severe salt damage thus causing rust along the entire exhaust system. Perhaps coating this with some kind of protective shield to prevent this from happening"

Teresa W., NM (2005 Toyota Matrix Standard 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"I had to have the complete exhaust system removed from behind the catalytic convert to the tail pipe."

Martin H., NY (2005 Toyota Matrix XRS 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, CA (2005 Toyota Matrix Standard 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"About 6 years ago the clock started to fade in its brightness and then completely disappeared about a year ago. I wanted a click that worked and was concerned maybe other lights were not illuminating when needed, such as warning and indicator lights. So I had the dealership troubleshoot, repair and replace the clock. And by doing so, I have noticed all the dash lights seem brighter and stronger."

Anonymous, (2005 Toyota Matrix Standard 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, NC (2005 Toyota Matrix Standard 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
    Wiper motor or washer

"Simple fix but dealership charged a lot to diagnose and then had to do 50% of the same labor to fix the problem at a later date so essentially doubled up on the cost"

Anonymous, NJ (2005 Toyota Matrix Standard 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"There is a strip on the hood where the paint apparently just peeled off. Nothing scratch it or anything that I know of, I noticed it one day about three years ago when washing the car. The area hasn't gotten much worse, about quarter inch wide and maybe 10 inches long. No dent in the metal either, so seemed that the paint apparently peeled free at some point, maybe when driving? No other areas of paint have peeled."

Anonymous, CA (2005 Toyota Matrix XRS 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"We have replaced the clutch three times since ownership"

Anonymous, CA (2005 Toyota Matrix XR 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Very low kms for a clutch change needed. Both drivers have long time experience using a manual transmission with no previous issues with any other vehicles. This car was always hard to shift, yet was told this was normal by dealer and garages."

David L., ON (2005 Toyota Matrix Standard 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Donna L., CA (2005 Toyota Matrix Standard 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Clutch wore out at roughly 185000 miles, had to be replaced, normal wear and tear, was able to be driven (carefully) to the mechanic without issue when wear got excessive."
