Toyota Prius Prime

The Toyota Prius Prime is for those consumers tempted to buy a fully electric vehicle, but who aren't willing to contend with the range anxiety that typically goes hand-in-hand with owning an electric car. For anyone who can charge frequently and thus maximize the electric drive, it's a compelling car. Otherwise, using it as a hybrid compromises fuel economy. You also get a $4,500 federal tax incentive, at least for now.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Very smooth in EV mode. Surprised to find good performance on hilly territory"

Anonymous, AZ (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"Electric motor is very responsive. Way better than a gas engine. Fantastic choice for a lot of city driving. Just remember to fill up at least once a year!!"

Anonymous, ON (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"Extra power from electric motor compared to regular Prius."

Peter F., PA (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"Trying to drive efficiently with the eco indicator does help with traffic awareness. Although the MPH display uses large digits, it's still difficult to gauge changes in speed through peripheral vision only. Some graphical indicator like a moving dot might help."

Anonymous, OR (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"Quick acceleration in the band of speeds where it is most used during me normal driving. 2018 has much better acceleration than the previous Prius V or my 2011 Prius. The regenerative braking is noticeably more aggressive during braking, returning more energy to the battery."

Paul B., AZ (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"It truly feels like you are driving a car of the future. The car does so much for you, automatically. I had concerns about it being underpowered from other reviews I’d read, but this was not the case."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"When the battery is charged, the car is terrific. The torque comes on seamlessly and the car is virtually silent. When it's running on gas, it's cheap, slow and loud."

John C., AZ (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"EV mode is very snappy around town. The overall power considering it’s amazing mpg is very satisfactory, surprisingly so. It is very comfortable on the road and much quieter than the 4cylinder Camry."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"The acceleration and torque in EV mode is pleasant and surprising."

L L., MD (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"The Prius Prime is a little heavier than the standard Prius. The extra battery actually seems to give the car a better feel, better handling, and certainly acceleration that feels much more lively than the 2017 Prius IV I had before. That plus the option to be an EV for the first 30+ miles make it great for me!"

Melvin H., TN (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"The handling can be a bit stiff but it has great acceleration and a lot more power than expected in a hybrid."

Anonymous, MI (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The Prius Prime is comfortable and quiet in most situations; however, at higher speeds with the gasoline engine running, the road noise is excessive."

Steven F., UT (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"I am a big guy and for a small car it is very comfortable and roomy"

Christopher L., WA (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"It's a ver quiet car with a smooth ride. The seats are not the most comfortable, and can be a little hard to adjust."

Anonymous, MI (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"Ride is great. Much superior to my 2006 Prius."

Gordon S., TX (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"The seats are great. Not like the six Volvos I had before, but pretty good and since they are white, the car doesn't get too hot. As to noise, the gas engine is loud, weak and cheap sounding."

John C., AZ (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"The seats and driving position are very comfortable. The lack of noise and vibration are excellent in EV mode. The ride is firm and well controlled."

L L., MD (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"Seats very comfortable on long drive"

Anonymous, AZ (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"Quiet, comfortable ride. Toyota didn't allow me to get the fabric covered seats in the Prime Advanced. I find fabric much more comfortable than other surfaces."

Paul B., AZ (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"quality. comfort, low noise and of course mileage."

Clay H., CA (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"Quiet and smooth ride. Rear visibility is so-so due to sloped hatchback window."

Anonymous, ON (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"very comfortable"

George K., KY (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"I have driven 3700 miles and have only used 22 gallons of gas. I only need to use the engine on longer trips and then I get 54 miles to the gallon. It's great!"

Bart J., OH (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"The fuel consumption has exceeded my expectations. I travel 38 km to work and back which I can do on a charge. This has resulted in a slight increase in electricity consumption but the savings on fuel is significant."

Anonymous, ON (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"great value, especially with rebates and EV bonuses"

Clay H., CA (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"The Prius Prime is an exceptional car. Given its high rate of fuel efficiency, the way it drives, and the many safety features—in addition to the EV credits—it is truly one of the best values out there. This is especially true in comparison to other EV’s and hybrids."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"3000 miles and filled the tank once. I get 20 t0 30 miles on a charge depending on ac usuage."

Mark G., NV (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"for 30000 - a very comfortable, great looking ( not green looking) and super gas conservation"

Joseph F., SC (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"The Fuel economy is great and the 25 mile range really covers many trips without using the regular hybrid drive. I anticipate receiving a tax credit for the plug in feature from the federal tax regulations."

Anonymous, KY (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"So far, so good as we have had this vehicle for only one month. We have driven 450 miles and still have over 1/2 tank of gasoline. The average MPH is 110."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)

"getting the tax credit!"

Anonymous, AZ (2018 Toyota Prius Prime)
