The RAV4 is quite competitive in its class with either the standard four-cylinder or the optional V6 engine. Improvements to the four-cylinder engine for this version of the compact Toyota SUV reduced noise. An available third-row seat and powerful V6 make it a good alternative to some midsized SUVs. The RAV4 is agile and roomy, rides comfortably and has a smooth drivetrain and a flexible interior.

Power steering pumps and hoses

"The electronic system glitches, and the power steering will shut off as you are driving it, which could be at 65 mph on the expressway. The dealer and 3 other shops said they cant fix it. it happens about every 2 mo. Mostly when very hot. Dealer replaced 3 expensive items, not fixed. Toyota web blogs are aware of this glitch, but they have not found a solution, only to say the computer shuts down "non vital" parts of the car when the power dips, and thus dash board lights all blink, and power steering shuts down."

"Dealer checks everything when I do an oil change and felt this needed attention."

Anonymous, AK (2006 Toyota RAV4 Sport 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The struts had bled out. So the ride was rough and noisy, and I felt like it didn't have the good handling of previous. It had been getting more noticeable for a while, and had been bad the past year or so. But we don't drive the vehicle a lot, so we didn't get it fixed right away. When we had it in for service and found out what it was, we decided to replace the struts in order to get more years from the vehicle. It is a second vehicle for us, that we use mostly around town and not for long trips. Since it is otherwise in good shape and is reliable, we feel like it is worth investing in repairs; cheaper than getting a different car to replace it."

Anonymous, MN (2006 Toyota RAV4 Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The boots surrounding the struts were deteriorated and subsequently the shocks were worn and the vehicle starting vibrating at speeds over 50 mph."

Anonymous, OR (2006 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"STEERING LINKAGE HAD A CLUNK WHILE TURNING. FROM WHAT I READ ON THE INTERNET, MANY PEOPLE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, BUT TOYOTA NEVER SEEMED TO HEAR THE NOISE UNTIL THE DRIVERS CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. AVERAGE COST TO REPAIR WAS $700"

James M., IL (2006 Toyota RAV4 Limited 3.5-L V6)

"I was having a snap-like feel when I came to a stop and proceed to turn left or right. The linkages were replaced about two or three times when the issue was solved. I had these steering problem when the car was fairly new"

Anonymous, MP (2006 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Tire wear is uneven

"Rear wheels cannot be aligned properly leading to cupping of tires. No fix available"

Sunset S., CA (2006 Toyota RAV4 Sport 3.5-L V6)

"Our RAV4 has been experiencing uneven tire wear on the rear tires that has caused the vehicle to wobble and make a loud wub wub noise when it's driven. We first noticed the problem when we had the tires rotated to the front. One mechanic thinks it's caused by a recall fix that installed permanent control arms on the back of the RAV4 so it can't be aligned by anyone but a Toyota dealer's repair shop. The tires are wearing out very prematurely."

Anonymous, WA (2006 Toyota RAV4 Base 3.5-L V6)
Wheel balance

"After the shocks were replaced the dealership had to go back and rebalance my tires that were not adequately balanced during the shock replacements."

Anonymous, (2006 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Wheel bearings

"Noise from wheel bearing slowly increased to the point where I could easily discern where the noise was coming from. Mechanic confirmed and replaced part."

Anonymous, NY (2006 Toyota RAV4 Base 3.5-L V6)

"After a trip from Boston to New York and back, at 178,000 miles, I noticed a clicking noise coming from the right front. I searched for possible causes online and determined that it was probably a wheel bearing. I had the diagnosis confirmed and repaired at the dealership where I bought the car. This was the first bearing replaced since the car was bought new."

"The oil consumption/leak was a recall item in the 2006 RAV4. My RAV did not have the issue during the recall monitoring period so nothing was done. Then 1.5 years later the car is drinking oil like crazy. When I looked into getting it fixed three different places told me either it is not worth fixing or unable to be fixed. My favorite honest car guy told me that not fixing this issue (whatever it is) is not dangerous to the car but that I will need to constantly watch my oil level. So I went to Costco, bought 2 cases of 00/20 synthetic oil. I check the oil every morning while the engine is cold and add oil if needed. There is always an extra bottle of oil in the car just in case. I plan to drive it until this solution no longer works."

"Toyota issued silent recall, but I only learned of the program after it had expired, forcing me to deal with a known problem with the prop shaft u-joint seizing up. This, in turn caused excessive vibration that broke two studs on the mounting hub of the rear differential. Replacing the prop shaft was relatively simple, but the studs on the hub could not be extracted, forcing additional expenditures for a $1500 hub assembly that integrates with the read differential. RAV4World and other forums document the issue very well and numerous Toyota customers missed out on this silent TSB/recall. Sneaky but legal. Definitely impacts my feelings toward Toyota."

Anonymous, ON (2006 Toyota RAV4 Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Both front wheel bearings went, though one was included in last year's survey. They reached about the same noise level about 9 months apart. At no time was there loss of function or control. They became progressively worse/noisier over thousands of miles."

Anonymous, NY (2006 Toyota RAV4 Base 3.5-L V6)

"found oil leakage on floor after car was in for oil change, I assumed it to be oil plug incorrectly installed. It was not. Dealer said I had to replace part of the drive shaft to left front wheel. They had trouble getting the correct part but gave me a loaner for a week or so until they fixed it. seems ok now"

What Owners Say

Cruise control

"sensors in the wheel are corroded and causing certain systems in the car to stop functioning: cruise, ABS brake system, etc. The cost to repair ONE of FOUR wheel sensors is $1000 per wheel. Because of cost, I chose not to get this fixed so my cruise no longer works. I am totally frustrated about the way these systems were set up on this SUV- making it extremely costly to repair. While Toyota's are reliable, their repairs have proven too costly for me so I won't buy another Toyota"

William D., OH (2006 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The cruise, anti/slip and one other thing are all tied to sensors located in each of the 4 wheels. These lights popped on about 5 years ago and of course the cruise, anti/slip etc stopped working. I took the car to toyota to determine the issue and was told the sensors needed replacing at a tune of $1000/wheel! these sensors are encased in the wheel so the entire wheel needs to be replaced to fix the problem.... and there are 4 wheels. Again because of the cost of repair on a very high milage car, i chose not to fix it and have been driving without cruise or anti-slip since then."

Interior lights

"The interior lights that are supposed to go on when the door is opened stopped working. The repair would have been too expensive so it was left as is."

Anonymous, NJ (2006 Toyota RAV4 Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The interior lights do not go on automatically when the door is opened and it would be expensive to fix according to our dealer"

Tire pressure monitor

"Faulty transmitter in one or more wheels gives false tire pressure alarm indication on dashboard. I use a tire pressure gauge monthly. Another issue: Radio on/off switch does not work. I now leave radio “on” because if I do turn it off it takes multiple switch pushes to get the radio back on. Volume function of the switch still works fine."

Anonymous, FL (2006 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"this sensor also short circuited and it will cost $200 to repair - just for the benefit of having a light tell you when your tires need air. My older 3 cars did not have this feature and I used a tire gauge to check the tires on occasion. So instead of fixing this, I opted to start using a tire gauge"

William D., OH (2006 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"I had to replace two of the tire pressure sensors"

Anonymous, IN (2006 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"the plastic casing near the ignition key cracked so a number of warning lights came on"

Chad K., IL (2006 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The plug underneath the driver's seat connecting the airbag warning is gone bad. The only way to fix it is to get a new seat, which is very costly. Warning lights on is a safety hazard."

Zhou Y., UT (2006 Toyota RAV4 Base 3.5-L V6)

"Traction control warning comes on and cannot be diagnosed effectively by mechanics. not able to cruise control. safety in winter is questionable. Very expensive and inconvenient repair - initial and expensive repair not effective."
