Parking brake

"Parking brake no longer holds the car. It has been serviced several times, but they cannot fix it. They want to replace the entire mechanism, but the price they have quoted is outrageous, and feels like they are trying to take advantage of our situation. We have elected to just live with it not working."

David G., OH (2012 Toyota RAV4 Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The parking brake no longer holds the car. I have taken it to the dealership multiple times for adjustment, and they have checked the rear adjustment, as well as removing the center console to check the front adjuster. They still cannot get the parking brake to grab, and now they are saying that the cable is too stretched out for the adjusters to take up the slack, and they want to replace the cable. I'm willing to make this repair, but the price they've quoted is unreasonable, and way out of line. I feel very strongly that they are trying to take advantage of us, and we have elected to forego the repair, and just place the transmission in Park when we leave the car."

Anonymous, VT (2012 Toyota RAV4 Base)

Ralph M., WA (2012 Toyota RAV4 Limited 3.5-L V6)

Leroy B., CO (2012 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I actually tried to figure out how to contact you and failed. Massive paint peeling in sheets on my pearl white 2012 RAV.This began about 2 years ago, or right after it went out of warranty. There are online blogs and numerous complaints for this paint type, but Toyota is unresponsive. Most bloggers are being told that the problem is either with improper priming or with the clear coating. Please see the blog Toyota/Lexus/Scion Blizzard Paint Peels and they won't fix it on facebook or contact me directly. I think there are numerous other online blogs, as the problem is widespread. This is a great car in every way except two... The paint and rust will require a full re-paint, and there is a significant problem with blindspots . I would not buy this car again (knowing what I now know), and I would strongly advise against such a purchase should anyone ask. My phone number is 985-373-6186. Email is betsytarkington@gmail.com. Fuel cap

"Cable going from drivers position to locking cover over gas filler cap either broke or came loose. Had to do and emergency repair at filling station in order to fill tank with gas. Dealer repaired fuel filler door unlocking cable under warranty. Aggr"

John M., TX (2012 Toyota RAV4 Limited 3.5-L V6)

"fuel cap design requires more forceful tightening to prevent esc and 4x4 malfunctions as evidenced by warning lights on dashboard. when car senses vapor leak, it shuts down those safety features rendering the car not as safe as it was intended to be. same lights first came on when an oxygen sensor malfunctioned. after replacing it, lights still come on and off from time to time after a tank fill up"

Fuel injection system

"Recently experienced sudden engine acceleration with revving engine at low speeds within a parking lot. Unsure how this is classified. Issue has occurred 3 times in 7 years. Toyota dealer found nothing and ultimately Toyota blamed my wife as accidentally hitting gas with break, but this was definitely not true. Car was put in neutral and engine shut down with engine revving. Once off, car was put in park. It was restarted without any further issue. Lawsuit from several years ago against Toyota covered this topic with no conclusion. It seems Toyota feels safe claiming driver error . Unfortunately, although this has been a great car otherwise, we do not know when this will happen again."

Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"Sensor light came on; had it checked by private mechanic, who at first thought it was loose gas cap. This did not solve problem, so mechanic replaced one of the sensors -- twice. Still did not make warning light go off, so took vehicle to certified Toyota service center. All 3 sensors had to be replaced."

"Check engine light came on, disabling the AWD feature, replaced 2 times within a few days, replaced 1 additional sensor which made O2 sensor fail"

"check engine light came on, and other idiot lights. Had it repaired, then a week later light came back on. The other sensor had to be replace"

"Upstream 02 sensor broke at 48000 miles. I was told this is very uncommon for a 3 year old vehicle"

Alyssa P., MD (2012 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The only indication was a light on the dash suggesting something wrong. It was determined to be an oxygen sensor. I was somewhat taken back that this was not covered under warranty since there was so little mileage on the car. the limit on the coverage was 3 years. I got it repaired because we had to pass an emission test to renew the car license."

Ed V., ON (2012 Toyota RAV4 Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The sensor lights go on when it gets very cold or rains heavy. Then they eventually go off as it warms up or dry weather arrives. These lights also come on -traction control, low tire and engine light. Computer code implies it is one of the O2 sensors. I just ignore it."

"Dashboard lights were on indicating a problem."

Joseph C., QC (2012 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"When the car sits in the hot sun for an extended period, the oxygen sensor triggers and a bunch of dashboard lights come on including check engine. There is nothing wrong with the car, but those lights could mask a more serious problem. I go to the dealer and they just reset the sensors."

"Purge Valve failed ( apparently due to overfilling/topping off of gas tank) and required replacement."

"Slight engine knock, check engine light on, repair and diagnosis about $150.00"

"The check engine light came on. Also, the 4 wheel drive and traction system lights came on. I took it to a local garage. They diagnosed it as the oxygen sensor. Cost me $240.00 to have it replaced. No problems since then."

"Two oxygen sensors failed and needed to be replaced"

"Several idiot lights came on after being on the road for about 6 hours. After checking the manual and determining there was nothing requiring immediate attention and only 30 miles remaining in the journey; continued on and took the car into the dealer the next day to replace the O2 sensor"

"as i have found to be common with my previous toyota vehicles, 1 oxygen sensor wore out prematurely after expiration of warranty coverage at an approximate repair cost of 400.00 for a 50.00 part"
