The 2013 RAV4 redesign eliminated the awkward side-hinged rear gate and replaced it with a more convenient top-hinged hatch. The spare tire was also moved off the rear gate to reside in a well beneath the cargo floor, which was previously occupied by the discontinued optional third-row seat.

Stephen R., IL (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
CD player

"Sometimes it does not work at all sometimes it does"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen difficult to see

"lettering too light on clock. Radio/CD change displays without warning"

Rita A., SD (2015 Toyota RAV4 LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Screen is too small, screen is difficult to impossible to see when sunlight is on it, this is particularly bad for the back up camera visibility"

Stanley W., NH (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"cannot see activity on screen at times due to sunlight glare"

Dave B., CA (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"during certain times with the sun shining-one can not view the screen"

Allan E., CA (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Display screen all but worthless in daytime conditions - constant glare on the screen makes it impossible to see the screen or any information contained on it"

John C., PA (2015 Toyota RAV4 LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The display screen is very reflective, to a dangerous degree. When driving with the sun behind the vehicle sunlight will reflect off of the display screen, blinding me as I drive"

Andy S., NY (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen freezes up

"Multimedia system got stuck in endless reboot cycle and failed to function."

Anonymous, IL (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It freezes about once or twice a month. Sometimes comes back on it's own, sometimes after turning car off."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sometimes the GPS screen will stay on the same map for miles and miles"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Stops functioning and have to stop and restart the car"

John L., ME (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen goes blank

"The screen went blank. Took car into dealer who replaces the whole radio system which was under warranty."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Toyota RAV4)

"screen wuld go blank and radio would shut off. Within 60-90 seconds, it would return to normal. Happened approx 3x/week without any patterns as to car location or time of day, just randomly"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"USB interfaces works only about 50% of the time at random intervals. Problem is independent of type of drive and is not a seating problem. Dealer still unable to find problem over two years now."

Anonymous, VA (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"when connecting an ipod (120GB) to the usb input only a limited number of tracks will be played before the ipod and car unit lock up. This does not happen when a ipod touch is used"

Anonymous, NJ (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The radio will not work with a thumb drive containing MP3 music. This is strange, as it seems to be set up to do so, but it doesn't work. I brought this up with the Toyota service center, and they confirmed that the radio does not work with MP3 thumb drives. This is a disappointment, particularly as our 2012 Honda Accord's radio works perfectly with a thumb drive, and it's much easier to scroll through music using the radio than with a separate iPhone"

Andy S., NY (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"system is useless. cannot recognize any voice commands and gives nonsense results. Toyota could do a free software update"

Anonymous, ON (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Outdated system that is inaccurate and dangerous"

Harvey G., AB (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Difficult programming directions"

Richard C., FL (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"app frequently is slow to load the ability to enter an address into navigation system"

Anonymous, WA (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The navigation system has a lot of features that could be USble but frequently are not. The USbility of the features is important as you don't want people 'messing' with the nav system while driving -- but frequently you need to resort to just that"

Brody B., AR (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"navigation system gives drastically wrong directions"

Dave B., CA (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"voice controls are completely useless. Toyota could do a software update to fix problems. Basically, it cannot understand any commands, and results are totally unrelated to request. Waste of money"

Anonymous, ON (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"GPS visibility is poor, as is the entire touchscreen. Adjustments to the GPS brightness did not work properly, causing the screen to go almost completely invisible. GPS data and updates also not very good/accurate. Navigation with voice control also essentially useless. Much of this is the touchscreen itself, touches do not cause action to perform"

Anonymous, VA (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Does not always pair up with the blue tooth"

Anonymous, OH (2015 Toyota RAV4 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The phone will disconnect a call when the steering wheel is turned too far in either direction."

Anonymous, NC (2015 Toyota RAV4 LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"occasionally the phone does not link at start-up or drop the link. It may be the phone because rebooting the LG phone solves this issue some of the times."

Anonymous, NJ (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Difficult to use not reliable"

Enio G., GA (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"phone occasionally looses connection to car. I can't answer incoming calls because the phone toggles back and forth between headset and car. Outgoing calls are fine"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Radio

"Bad Radio and also two times vehicle would Not Start. The Electrical system acting strange/intermittent, but Toyota could not find source of problem."

Henry M., OH (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Radio display did not work properly in below freezing weather. A software update fixed the problem."

Greg-Becky J., MI (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Infotainment volume is not high enough to sufficiently overcome driving noise in some conditions."

Andrew S., MA (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"radio cuts out for a few seconds, several times a day. I took it in and they said that is normal because it is a hd radio. I find this hard to believe"

Anonymous, IL (2015 Toyota RAV4 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""Premium" Entune system sounds like a clock radion. Radio won't hold equalizer settings and randomly resets to defaults. Also, Voice reco is very spotty"

Andy Z., NJ (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"satellite radio signals are poor in hilly terrain, really bad reception when the leaves are on the trees. It is marketed as a paying option and they really should do something about the poor signal strength"

Stanley W., NH (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Routine software updates

"The manufacturer charges a lot of money to update the software and the outdated cheap navigation system. Have to use a Garmin unit with lifetime free updates since the navigation is so unreliable."

Harvey G., AB (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Speakers

"Premium system is not premium. The bass is nonexistent."

Harvey G., AB (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Paid extra to have the radio with 11 speakers with subwoofer and this does not operate well for a premium system. Supposed to have over 500 watts JBL, but sounds most of the time like a regular radio"

Robert H., FL (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Steering wheel controls

"Often I will notice that the Cruise Control is tuned on, when It was not turned on. The button to turn on or off is located at the end of the control arm, and can easily be turned off or on accidently especially when wearing winter gloves. I feel the control arm should be shorter. It has not caused a problem for me but there is a potential for an unintended slow down"

Anonymous, ON (2015 Toyota RAV4 LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Voice control commands

"system simply doesn't work 95% of the time, even though trained with my voice multiple times"

Anonymous, VA (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"voice commands never worked properly, the system either said please say again or spouted nonsense, the only exception was when I was waiting @ a red light, when my car was operating on the road it was terrible, I returned to the dealer 4 times an supposedly they got it to work indoors!"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"No matter how many times we train the VC system to recognize our voices, it just doesn't work more than a little. It's more of a distraction than using hte touchscreen while driving."

Dale D., NC (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Randomly, but repeatedly, when I use the voice command function, it causes the screen to freeze, and all functions on the screen (radio, etc.) cease to work. After a few minutes, the system will reboot, and functions return to normal. I have taken it to the dealer twice for this. They have applied the latest updates to the Entune software, but this has not fixed the problem."

Anonymous, TN (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"response time on voice sometimes takes 5 seconds and other times 5 minutes to respond; the dealer looked and said it was fine. I have video footage proving otherwise. I just don't care about the voice feature enough to raise a stink over it but it bugs me the dealer said everything was fine."

Stephen H., PA (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Does not understand commands"

Richard C., FL (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"system does not understand commands when spoken at normal volume levels and speed"

Anonymous, WA (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The command system is neither user friendly nor intuitive. The system is list driven with a completely illogical list of choices. The system frequently fails to execute on commands and has several dead ends that require a complete restart"

Brody B., AR (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"voice commands work only with the car not moving. any other time you receive mumbo jumbo. dealer says it works fine"

Allan E., CA (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Voice recognition has been awfully on this vehicle from day one. It recently stopped working. Was told that the software w as out of date by two years. In other words from the day I got the car. Has been working Mitch better since but still not great"

Michael M., OH (2015 Toyota RAV4 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This function is essentially useless whether using for navigation, audio, or anything. If you use it, CANCEL will be the most used function"

Anonymous, VA (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"Water pump failed"

John H., MN (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Mold damage due to water leaking from the sunroof, apparently from clogged drain holes. Seems like a bad system if the drain holes can be clogged. No one ever discussed the need to check the holes, and at none of my mileage service visits did anyone check the holes or provide advice on keeping them unclogged. It was an expensive problem to fix ($1500.)"

L S., MD (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Problem with sun roof leaking water was on driver sign floor carpet. Roof drain hoses are a bad design"

Anonymous, CT (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Seals and/or weather-stripping

"mechanism around sunroof was rattling; dealer fixed"

William C., NC (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The driver side weather stripping was defective(had a 3 inch cut along the seam"

Daniel K., NH (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Squeaks or rattles

"The vents in the dashboard rattle. When I told the dealer about this, I was told the entire dash would have to be taken out to fix the rattles, so it would be too expensive."

L S., MD (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Liftgate makes a noise when opening and closing."

Anonymous, FL (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"We have had a squeak from suspension components since 4000 miles. We have had it in a dealership over 15 times now. One dealer could never reproduce it, other heard it but after replacing many parts, issue still occurs on a daily basis."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Rattling sound coming fro engine compartment."

Anonymous, FL (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Dealer replaced the front sway bar which was defective."

Greg-Becky J., MI (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"There is an intermittent rattle/rubbing sound coming from the area above the rear view mirror. Of course, when we took it to the dealer, it wasn't making the sound. We'll be taking it back soon"

John S., MN (2015 Toyota RAV4 LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"When the temperature is colder than around 10 degrees, it sounds like the "hard" interior materials (like plastic) are cracking -- very loud - although no visible damage"

Anonymous, MN (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Rattle in dash by radio/climate system. Only on roads that are not smooth"

Keith M., BC (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"front brake pads cause banging sound when applying the brakes, going forward and reverse"

Anonymous, ON (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Plastic parts on dashboard squeaking"

Anonymous, TX (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The car suspension began squeaking around 5,000 miles. We have taken it to dealer who said there is nothing they can do and squeaks are normal. The transmission makes clunky noises and wind noise is high. I know RAV is not luxury car BUT $32,000 is still a lot of money and should mean something. I no longer expect this from any car maker in 2015 to now"

John A., NC (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"In dash rattle. Corrected under warranty by dealership"

Greg M., ON (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Four trips to dealer to correct significant rattling in sun roof. One time the entire unit wa replace. Also, molding fell off"

William E., NJ (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Constant noise from interior materials rubbing together. Taken to the dealership who "could not find any noises" - dealership "test drove" the vehicle less than 1 mile according to odometer readings"

John C., PA (2015 Toyota RAV4 LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sometimes/intermittently hear a metal rubbing sound when I push the brakes. Took it to the dealer and they said the brakes were fine and they were not able to reproduce the described sound. They thought it might be dust"

Anonymous, SC (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Wind noise

"Most noise I have ever experienced in a vehicle. Hard to have a conversation while driving. Also road noise due to poor insulation and very rough ride"

Harvey G., AB (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This vehicle is not quiet at freeway speeds. Road noise and wind noise can be very wearing depending on the road surface."

Ron A., OR (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Due to the lifted molding on the front window passenger side, there's constant wind noise when I drive over 45 mph. It's annoying."

Ingrid A., WI (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I think this is more road noise than wind noise, but you didn't have a box for that."

Beverly G., TX (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It seems to have a lot of road noise. It may be the tires"

Anonymous, ON (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

David B., MA (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Brakes were replaced by the dealer repair shop, cost for this is outrageous."

Stanley W., NH (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"After I purchased this used vehicle out of town, I took it to my local mechanic, who determined the brakes needed to be replaced, something that was not disclosed by the used car dealer. My mechanic replaced the brakes and the car has worked fine."

Anonymous, KY (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Replaced rear brake Pads and Rotors"

Anonymous, NS (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"noise in wheel. Had it looked at by TOYOTA which could not identify the problem Went to Pep Boys who identified the problem and replaced the breaks."

Anonymous, FL (2015 Toyota RAV4 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Premature brake wear

"In this instance, the Toyota Service representative claimed that my brake pads were showing excessive wear, and my rotors had to be turned. The brakes were working well, but they were making more noise than usual (when wet). I recently learned that Toyota did some time ago issue an alert for such problems on Year 2015 models. I have not ha the time to follow up on that information. Without question, the problem was not a normally expected one."

Anonymous, VA (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Front brakes pads and rotors needed replacement at 43798 km I think that was poor."

C G., ON (2015 Toyota RAV4 LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Brakes developed a grinding noise when brakes were applied. Our mechanic felt it was road debris (i.e. road sand, salt, etc. We have 10 months of winter here, and 2 months of poor sleddin, so plenty of road salt and sand to contend with) This could have caused the early problems with the brakes. Both pads and rotor were replaced last August."

Anonymous, NH (2015 Toyota RAV4 LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I'm not a hard on the brake pedal nor do I drive a great deal but I had the car into Toyota complaining about the feel of the brakes at least two times before it was said I needed new brakes when the warranty expired. This vehicle is not like the Toyota's of the past."

Anonymous, PA (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I had to replace the brakes at 15000 miles, which I felt was very early in wear."

Morris H., CA (2015 Toyota RAV4 LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"So few miles driven over 2 years for brakes and rotor wear to such a degree on the right front wheel seems very unusual"

Dan D., PA (2015 Toyota RAV4 LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The disks and pads had to be replaced after only 40,000 KM. This is much less than with our Camry 2011."

Andre P., QC (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Brakes replaced under warranty"

Craig G., CA (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Front break pads wore more quickly than expected and required replacement"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota RAV4 LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Rotors

"Every time the car is due for brake service the rotors must be replaced. I have never been able to replace just the pads."

Fred F., NY (2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Right front rotor developed a surface defect and along within the brakes needed replacement. For the miles driven I thought this was very unusual with such low milage and modest driving."

Dan D., PA (2015 Toyota RAV4 LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"If this vehicle is allowed to sit without being driven for a period of time of approximately a week or more, even if garaged and with the emergency brake off, the brake rotors grind and seize when the car is subsequently driven. Toyota has resurfaced the rotors twice on this vehicle, at their expense, but insist that there is no problem with the brakes. I've never experienced this kind of problem in any of the many automobile that I have owned over the years. I believe that this is a manufacturing defect."

Prager J., MA (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I had to replace all four rotors the day after I drove it off the lot. The dealer lied about the vibrations .I called Toyota USA and they made the dealer do all repairs free."

Why did your repair person cut off 12 plus inches of my wiring harness? We pulled the quarter panel and found where the wiring harness had been cut. Constance B., NC (2015 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

When I told the Toyota dealership about it, expecting them to fix it, I was told that it was a known issue and don't go through a car wash. The molding on the passenger side front window is lifted and whistles as well. I brought it in and they tried double side taping it-twice. Seriously? double sided tape? I would never buy a Toyota SUV again."

Loose interior trim or moldings

"Pannel under passenger dash comes off constantly, annoying. Other interior plastic parts pop off or have completely broken off to. Also, there was no place to leave comment so I'll leave it here, the RAV4 has been a mechanically reliable car' however, it is one of the most uncomfortable cars I've ever ridden in. The vibration is horrible and seats are extremely uncomfortable especially how high they placed the headrests. My spouse is short and always has neck pain after riding with me in this car. I will never buy another RAV4 because of the poor comfort. Next time I will buy either a Subaru or Honda."

Joanne W., FL (2015 Toyota RAV4 LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

The only way to resolve the door trim issue was to replace the entire left front interior door panel. Both of these items were replaced under the auspices of the car's factory warranty"

"After driving on a 600-mile road trip, the paint on the hood and doors was noticeably pocked. Toyota says this is because small gravel from the road can damage the paint. After they touched it up (for free), we had them put on a clear adhesive bra and side mirror and door protectors (~$200) to minimize the damage. They also advised us to not drive behind semis, so we don't. This was never a problem with our 2003 RAV4"
