The original Toyota RAV4 pioneered the small, car-based SUV segment in the mid-1990s, and it has continued to set a high standard for the class with each subsequent generation—until now. Today, the RAV4 is no longer among the best in class in our road tests. Toyota changed the RAV4's proportions with the redesign, drawing styling cues from its truck-based vehicles to craft a more rugged appearance.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2019 Toyota RAV4 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Apple CarPlay

"Will not bring up station list on favorites or will sporadically. When restarting the car even when it is plugged in have set it back to station each time. A lot of distraction with trying to re-engage or trouble shoot the lists while driving or waste a lot of time pulling over to get it to work."

Anonymous, PA (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The system will not stay connected. I've tried several wires and phones. It is so irritating I've stopped trying to use it."

Anonymous, (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
CD player

"We were very disappointed to not have a CD Player with the car ....might have changed my mind with leasing this vehical at all."

Anonymous, ND (2019 Toyota RAV4 Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Toyota Entune is terrible and Scout Navigation System is worse. I've had to use a Garmin placed over top of the navigation device due to the unreliability of the system. The Entune system is unreliable and software updates don't help. The not in USA. Toyota will accept Android play in some 2020 models. I like the vehicle but am terrible disappointed with the whole system and am considering an aftermarket unit.Entune will only operate with Apple Play but not with Android. Updates are being done overseas but not in the USA."

Hardware replacement

"Infotainment module would not connect to phone so entire module needed to be replaced. Covered by warranty."

Anonymous, MD (2019 Toyota RAV4 LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"It sometimes gets addresses wrong."

Anonymous, NJ (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The button on the dash nav. often has to be pushed several times to return to nav. map, just annoying and time does not display. None of this is big deal, just annoying. With COVID-19 I've not gone to a dealer."

Anonymous, MI (2019 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Navigation system is awful. Information is not current and has gotten me lost or sent me on a circular route numerous times. Total waste of money. Shouldn't have gotten it."

Anonymous, TX (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"WE were not given complete instructions on how to operate the system. It took 3 visits before they were able to make it work. The GPS system has to have my cell phone hocked up to it. It is a real PIA to use."

Anonymous, IN (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The GPS requires the phone to be connected to the USB port. Otherwise it navigates with text and voice only, no map. Not convenient. And if you want to look at the map while driving, such as see what a road name is with a missing sign, you have to connect the phone. Then you use the Entune map which is not even remotely close to Google Maps, Mapquest, etc. Like a program from some dark age decades ago. Very poor quality. . Connecting and disconnecting is very clunky in my opinion for a Toyota which I consider a fine vehicle. Remote connect to a smartphone was free but they say only for 3 months, now a monthly service charge. No update available for connecting to an Android phone, and presumably there is nothing in the works. Apple phones we hear connect with no problem. But I don't use Apple phones so this has no value to me. Now I pretty much ignore the GPS and just use my phone. It's not worth the effort to try and use the GPS. Entering an address takes a lot of patience, slow response time so by the time you start entering it, you cause an error. Then the time delay for it to restart and be ready for the address to be entered, maddening. Maybe this is 3rd party software but it's installed in a Toyota. My last Camry was a 2005 and I had 340,000 miles on it. I had good reason to buy another Toyota but didn't want to spend $50,000 plus, and have to pay a subscription so I could use my phone with it. Basically just dissapointed with Toyota on this one. Don't know if I'll go back when I decide to buy a vehicle again. If it wasn't for this, I'd say it's a very good vehicle that runs, and rides decent and gets good mileage."

Anonymous, MO (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"1. It prefers to pair with my husband's phone, or just doesn't pair sometimes without physically pressing buttons. 2. It does not have Android though it has Apple which is very inconvenient in this day of technology."

Anonymous, PA (2019 Toyota RAV4 Adventure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"We can receive/make calls, but the caller/recipient can't hear us."

Anonymous, MN (2019 Toyota RAV4 LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Maybe this problem of Bluetooth disconnecting is due to Toyota's refusal to provide timely normal over air updates and even time consuming dealership long waits. But the Bluetooth is constantly disconnecting. So I have to re-enter my cellphone data!!"

Anonymous, CA (2019 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"There is NO clear, concise explanation of how to pair Bluetooth phone items with this system, or what that pairing will accomplish for the driver. The owner's manual is over 700 pages long and would take years to read and completely understand. I finally figured it out via trial and error."

Virginia R., ID (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"We have to keep entering saved phone numbers"

Anonymous, NJ (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Radio

"Again, there is lack of clear, concise explanations on very simple items such as how to select and save preferred radio stations. Trial and error over a period of 2 months worked much better than trying to read the owner's manual."

Virginia R., ID (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Routine software updates

"Whenever I do a software update, it causes issues with the volume of the infotainment system, it loses the volume to the point it is barely audible."

Anonymous, (2019 Toyota RAV4 LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"My new system needed an update, but Toyota refused the normal over air sent update to software."Make a reservation at a Dealership." I did, in home town Burlingame. On time for scheduled appointment, I was told "The appointment is only the exact time to drop off your new Toyota for a regular software update, Not the starting of work on your car, just storage until we get to your car.". This was before CoVid Crisis, so I left and drove miles to Palo Alto Toyota regular free maintenance. They did all the scheduled regular maintenance, EXCEPT for the software update!"Our technis too busy, reschedule another appointment." It has been months since those 2 dealership visits, and my software is still Not Updated!!"

Anonymous, CA (2019 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Entune Software Update application will not download"

Anonymous, (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I'm told there will not be a software update for use with an Android phone for the 2019 model year RAV4. Although it was mentioned in the dealership, it sounds like this will not happen. Very dissapointed."

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Clutch adjustment

"It's apparently a manufacturing defect and parts had to be ordered according to the VIN number. It was not a recall. Has something to do with the clutch and is worse when it's hot outside. The parts just came in and the repair is scheduled for next week."

Anonymous, (2019 Toyota RAV4 Adventure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Rough shifting

"At very slow speeds coming to almost a stop, the transmission will jerk entire car when you hit the gas"

Anonymous, CA (2019 Toyota RAV4 LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"A common problem most 2019 RAV4's had in looking for gears at various times.Toyota put a technical service bulletin about this problem."

"shifting not smooth when going from a slow speed to a higher speed"

Anonymous, OK (2019 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, WI (2019 Toyota RAV4 LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Very rough 2-1 shift. Rough shifting all gears, reprogram computer, made problem better. Gas mileage was marginally improved after reporgram"

Anonymous, FL (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The transmission would down shift very hard after making a turn and pressing the gas peddle to accelerate. The dealer did a software update to correct the problem. It seems to have worked so far."

Anonymous, AZ (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Transmission engages at a jerk when coming out of a rolling stop or at a quick start up from stop"

Anonymous, MI (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Dealer says its "normal" Nothing they can do"

Anonymous, CA (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"When you slow down and then step on the gas nothing happens for a second or two. The trans will hunt for a gear to select and then find it and you take off with a jerk when this happens. Also when you step on the gas a little too much it down shifts and the engine makes too much noise. This is a new transmission for the RAV4, it is a 9 speed trans and I think it has some problems that Toyota needs to find a fix for it."

Wayne P., AZ (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"When slowing to approximately 10 mph or less the vehicle is very slow to down shift so the vehicle lurches and hesitates before being able to accelerate. This happens most often on making turns and when driving in heavy traffic."

Anonymous, TX (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"At low speed, almost stopped it has trouble deciding on what gear to go into, 1st or 2nd and clunks into one or the other with a rough shift."

Anonymous, ON (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The 8-speed transmission shifts up very abruptly at lower speeds. and shifts down very abruptly. The jerking of the vehicle due to rough shifting is so bad that driving in traffic causes nausea. It is undrivable, we are returning it to the dealer."

Alex M., FL (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Taking off from a stop the car will shift many times. A lot of noise."

Anonymous, MD (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Slipping transmission

"Transmission randomly slips at times especially when cold. Constantly shifting and never in the right gear"

Anonymous, CA (2019 Toyota RAV4 LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Transmission computer

"Transmission had very abrupt up and down shifts, down shifts were dangerous when slowing down to make a turn. It was like this from brand new, Toyota had no TSB's on this problem, I had to research this myself. Found a lot of transmission reports from owners from USA, finally came across a US version of TSB and took all articles to my dealership, since they were denying and problems. I finally convinced them a low a behold they found the Canadian version of TSB and had to flash and reprogram computer. Works much better now."

Anonymous, ON (2019 Toyota RAV4 LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Replaced under warranty/service order"

Anonymous, FL (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Transmission reacted unusually. While moving slowly, like 10 mph, accelerating the car would cause hesitation then jerk forward suddenly. Researched. Discovered a software fix for problem. Went to Dealer to have problem fixed. Dealer refused to upgrade software and tried to blame me for not knowing how to drive. After arguing for a half-hour, the Dealer upgraded software and problem was resolved."

Anonymous, NY (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"there is a definite hesitation when turning into traffic. iris very problematic."

Anonymous, CA (2019 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Transmission leaks

"Transmission was groaning when you shifted up or down from a speed of 20 miles a hour. Toyota replace a transfer clutch mechanism. This was also from a technical service bulletin."

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Seals and/or weather-stripping

"Right front passenger door fills with water after a hard rain. Suspect it's a weather stripping issue. Bringing it in to the dealer for repair. I've never had this problem with any Toyota before."

Anonymous, (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Squeaks or rattles

"There was a rattle in the rear drivers side roof. This noise sounds like a wire harness/cable, or panel that rattles very loudly at 10 - 35 mph, and only below 70 degrees. it does get worse the lower the temperature gets outside. As a mechanic that I am, I have experience with vehicle noises. You would swear it is coming from underneath the rear roof headliner, at the rear door. I had my wife drive as I sat in the rear of the vehicle. I have found that the noise is coming from within the rear wing that is attached to the rear hatch door, where the 3rd brake light is located. At first I was able to slide pieces of thin rubber or gasket material in between the wing and the rear door, this definitely changed the noise, and I knew I was on the right track. When we purchased this vehicle from new, it was Hot outside, the vehicle does not make this noise during the summer. This tells me that as the temperature rises, some parts are expanding in the heat and the rattle stops. This rattle is very loud and distinct!! If the rear door is closed and you slightly press up and down on the wing, you can duplicate the clicking/rattle noise. As a Mechanic you would call this "beer Canning". the 2 panels are rattling against each other. This is a very small area, 6"x 10", but I was able to slip a 1/4" plastic tubing, about 18" long, into the wing towards the drivers side corner, the I tie wrapped it to the wire harness in the wing where the wire harness goes through, very easy to access and put back without any tools at all. I tied it to the wire harness so it would stay wedged over the side that rattles, it works like a charm, NO RATTLES. Toyota should have incorporated some type of padding between these panels."

Anonymous, NJ (2019 Toyota RAV4 LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"There is a screeching noise that happens around my instrument panel. It mostly happens on uneven roads or blacktop roads"

Anonymous, TX (2019 Toyota RAV4 LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The breaks frequently squeak. I reported this problem to the Toyota establishment where I bought it and where I have been getting service. They said it was typically caused by driving on dusty roads. However, it happens even when NOT driving on dusty roads."

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"Not long after purchase the driver's side metal door edge guard bent slightly and came loose. Perhaps it got caught on a coat. The dealership satisfactorily took care of the problem, installing a new one."

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Anonymous, LA (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Refrigerant leaks

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Fuel gauge/sender

"I don't speak mechanic very well - sorry. The fuel gauge does not read appropriate amount of fuel correctly. The gauge indicates fuel for a ;to of driving, but when it get off full, it zorches down the rest of the tank."

Anonymous, TX (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Gauge shows empty long before tank is empty. It has a 14.5 gallon tank, but even after driving on "empty" for quite awhile, the most it has ever taken is under 12 gallons."

Anonymous, (2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Over the last 2 months, fuel gauge has become inaccurate. Shows about 1/4-tank lower than actual fuel level."

Anonymous, KY (2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"The gas pump caused fueling to stop way too soon. Since the gauge is unreliable at the full end, we never knew if we've received a full tank of gas. We took it into the dealership twice and they kept it to thoroughly evaluate. They agreed there was a problem and on contacting Toyota discovered that the flaw was not unique to our vehicle and was being investigated. We've heard nothing since and the annoying problem continues to plague us. In order for the pump to provide sufficient gas, we have to finagle with removing, reinserting, and then s.l.o.w.l.y drizzle the gas in with the nozzle. Then we never know if the tank is really emptier than the gauge shows. A royal pain! The worst part is that we LOVE the vehicle otherwise, but this flaw is unacceptable."

Anonymous, TX (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Exhaust leaks

"A few hours after returning home from a drive in this car, a liquid form of exhaust is fanned out of the vehicle onto the floor of the garage and forms a puddle. According to the user manual, this is a standard event, and not because of a malfunction."

Anonymous, ID (2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The engine is too loud. Sounds like an exhaust leak. Dealer says all cars of this type sound like mine does."

Leonard M., IN (2019 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Other/unsure

"It is great when you have a line on the road on each side of the vehicle. But with the center line only it wants to wander right to find the other line, to the point of almost going into the ditch!"

Transfer case

"There was a grinding noise from the front of the car, seemed to be coming from near the drivers side front wheel. At first, the mechanics at the dealership couldn’t diagnose it. They could hear it but not sure what it was. An engineer was called in and diagnosed the problem as the transfer case. It was replaced at no charge and I was given a free loaner vehicle for 2 days while the repair was made. No problems since."

There was no recall but I found an official Toyota repair had been issued to correct the problem. I brought my car into the dealer and they updated the software which took care of the problem."
