The Toyota Sienna affords a comfortable ride and a smooth, energetic powertrain returning respectable fuel economy. Expect 20 mpg overall from the front-wheel-drive version. If you need an all-wheel-drive minivan in this model year, Sienna is your only choice. Be apprised however, those four-driven wheels sacrifice one mpg and dictate run-flat tires.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2013 Toyota Sienna owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"The sunroof(s) started leaking and after several visits to the dealership, Toyota Corporation removed and replaced key components to the sunroof(s) to correct the problem. All total, the bills came in at over $3500 of which Toyota paid in full. As of February, 2018 I have not noticed any further leaks."

C P., FL (2013 Toyota Sienna Limited 3.5-L V6)

"sun roof air / water leak"

Anonymous, VA (2013 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Toyota Sienna SE 3.5-L V6)
Seals and/or weather-stripping

Squeaks or rattles

"Even slow speed uneven road twist of the body emits a loud creak from somewhere, multiple dealer visits never resolved it. One source was loose rear seats (TSB) another was a loose lugnut I found my jack stowage. Creak sounds like old loaded picked truck bed settling. Dissapointing Toyota build. Contacted corporate about all the problems/issues...response was to sell trade it. Not helpful"

Anonymous, ON (2013 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"The problem is with the front bumper cover. It is held on with little plastic clips that seem to break easily. I have twice had to replace the bumper cover because of this at a cost of about $400 each time."

Anonymous, KY (2013 Toyota Sienna Base 3.5-L V6)

"The trim is coming loose around the windows and the gasket around the back passenger side window has come loose. We experienced both of these problems with our 2007 Toyota corollas as well. Time for them to fix this junk!"

Anonymous, MS (2013 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"Two different times in two different automatic carwashes the rear plastic covering for the bumper has been damaged. Toyota customer service claims no knowledge of such problems. Carwash association & owners have reported same thing for several years"

Larry S., MS (2013 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"The whole front end (including bumper) assembly came off the car while I was backing out of a parking space a "Cracker Barrel" restaurant. The six "clips" which keep this assembly attached to the van are not strong enough to hold the entire assembly"

"The middle row of seats are on tracks that allow them to slide forwards and backwards. There are four long tracks. On both sides of each track, there are plastic trim pieces. These eight trim pieces have repeatedly become loose. They frequently require me to put them back into place. There doesn't seem to be any sort of adequate attachment to the floor for these pieces. They don't seem to snap into anything and they aren't screwed down. It's not dangerous, but it's annoying!"

Anonymous, CA (2013 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

Ruth G., BC (2013 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Immediately after leaving the dealership with this car, I experienced braking problems. The dealership was closed upon my departure and it was Saturday. We had to drive back to TX by Monday, so we planned to have the car adjusted there. Upon inspe"

"Have replaced brake pads and rotors 2 times. Wear out after 14-15000 Kilometers"

Robert S., ON (2013 Toyota Sienna Limited 3.5-L V6)
Pulsation or vibration

"Have had to replace brake rotors a few times on this vehicle. It seems that the rotors/pads are sized properly for the weight of this vehicle."

Anonymous, OH (2013 Toyota Sienna Limited 3.5-L V6)

"While breaking, experienced the pulsation/vibration but could not believe it was my breaks again - a 6 year old car, with breaks completely redone 18 months ago at the dealership, and I had to put several hundred $$ on both front and back breaks. The Sienna has had small problems (mostly assembly - rubber seals coming apart) from the beginning. My Honda Odyssey (died at 8 years old in an accident)had no problem whatsoever. So I am spending more on the maintenance of the Toyota than I ever did of my Honda. By the time the Sienna is 8 years old, I will have spent more on maintenance than the price difference at the outset. BUT, I do love driving that Sienna SE - drives like a « sportier » car."

Anonymous, NB (2013 Toyota Sienna SE 3.5-L V6)
Regular brake failure

"I tried to stop at a stop sign and bumped into an older pickup in front of me. No significant damage observed on either vehicle. The brakes they operated properly for 100 miles or so but upon the return of a trip when I entered my garage, they failed to operate a second time and I ran into a freezer in front of my vehicle. Mechanic had to install a new Brake Booster to repair."

Body Hardware

Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top.

What Owners Say

Doors or sliding doors

"I've had no problems, but Toyota has issued a recall notice for an electrical problem related to the powered side doors"

Thom R., DE (2013 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"Recall on doors due to chance of lock failure if door travel restricted. Toyota has no solution. This Sienna is a handicapped accessible ramp van and their "temporary" (about 6 mo. so far) is to tell the users to disable the power close. When told that this is a handicapped van they told me "Well that's the option you have". When asked how they think the ADA would feel about that solution they said... do what you have to do. NEVER buy a Toyota!"

Chas M., NJ (2013 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The sliding doors have opened themselves. I know that it sounds like I have a ghost, but Toyota has acknowledged the problem in a recall. So far, this has only happened when the vehicle was parked, but according to Toyota's recall notice, this can happen while the vehicle is in motion. This is a SERIOUS and DANGEROUS problem. It's been six months since I got the recall notice and they still don't have a resolution"

"The power doors stopped operating properly. They had to be opened and closed manually. My doors also unlocked and opened themselves when the car was parked. I know that it sounds like voodoo, but they did that twice. The first time, it was raining but luckily, the inside of the car didn't get wet. I came back to the car from doing some shopping and the door was wide open. The second time, the car was parked on a city street and someone ransacked the interior. I came back to the car and again, the door was wide open. Toyota sent out an acknowledgement of the problem. I got my notice around November 2016. Apparently, the doors would also open when the car was moving (!) under certain conditions. It affected 2011-2016 Siennas. They said that they were working on a fix. It then took Toyota a FULL YEAR from that announcement to come up with a fix. Because there were so many cars affected and the fix required extensive rewiring of the car, I had to wait for about a couple of weeks to get my car repaired. It then took a couple of days to get my car fixed."

Automatic climate control

"The climate control is awful. At the second lowest setting (65) you still roast in winter, next step lower lets in pure winter air. Cars from the 70s ,80s ,90s had Much better control.
