The Toyota Sienna affords a comfortable ride and a smooth, energetic powertrain returning respectable fuel economy. Expect 20 mpg overall from the front-wheel-drive version. If you need an all-wheel-drive minivan in this model year, Sienna is your only choice. Be apprised however, those four-driven wheels sacrifice one mpg and dictate run-flat tires.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Body Hardware

Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top.

What Owners Say

Doors or sliding doors

"There has been chronic issue of sliding doors not operating correctly, would not close and latch properly. We have had three repairs done, one was a safety recall, the other two were covered under warranty."

Anonymous, IN (2014 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"sliding door stopped working. Dealer replaced hinge. Not under warranty"

Anonymous, CT (2014 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"The power sliding doors will intermittently stop when closing and reopen. When this happens the power doors must be disengaged and used manually."

Anonymous, WV (2014 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"Doors are glitchy- sometimes don't operate as expected, but dealer states just lubrication problem."

Rick O., NJ (2014 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"Sliding door worked well, but was subject to a recall. Done at Toyota dealer. Airbag recall also done at Toyota dealer. I only have ONE Toyota Sienna, not two."

Anonymous, FL (2014 Toyota Sienna Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Sliding door recall, Airbag recall"

Anonymous, FL (2014 Toyota Sienna Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Both sliding passenger doors had issues with the cable that pulled them open getting kinked. Both had to be replaced and this is the second time we've had to have it repaired."

John G., MN (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Both power sliding doors often close nearly all the way but then reverse as if they've encountered an obstacle. Sometimes it requires multiple attempts to close the doors, even with a passenger 'helping' to push the door closed."

Dave R., WI (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The sliding door motors seem weak. Had to replace one and have to manually help the second door to close."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"We have had multiple issues with the automatic sliding doors on our van. One time the cable that pulls them open broke. Currently when you push the button to have them automatically close, one of the doors closes about 3/4 of the way, then hits something internally and then opens back up. The dealership said that there's some hinge that's ready to break that needs to be replaced."

John G., MN (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Power sliding door makes clicking sound when operating, sometimes sticks and must be operated manually"

Anonymous, NC (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Driver's side sliding door would occasionally close to within 6 inches and reverse itself. Dealer replaced a mounting bracket under warranty"

Dave R., WI (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Shortly after purchasing sliding door wouldn't fully close and would reopen on its own. Took to dealer numerous times. Recall issued 2 years after purchase and to date no action has been implement to correct issue"

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"Intermittent failure to open using electric switches; failures in latching"

Roger D., NY (2014 Toyota Sienna SE 3.5-L V6)

"Sliding door mechanics had to be bypassed and Toyota has been unable to provide a fix for the past six months"

Daniel L., IL (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The power sliding doors work intermittently. At times they will not close without physical assistance"

Robert A., NY (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"doors don"t always close, the sliding doors"

Anonymous, RI (2014 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"Recall notice because sliding doors could open when driving. Toyota has not addressed this issue! Just sent a recall notice. Sliding doors make a banging noise sometimes when they open. Sounds like they are going to break. This happens occasionally...reported to service department they had no fix suggestions"

Gary W., TN (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Recall for electrical power"

Anonymous, TN (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"sliding door on the passenger side closed on it's own"

Anonymous, NB (2014 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"On two occasions the automatic closure feature of the passenger-side sliding door (pull the handle and the door should close on its own) has failed. In each instance the door would close part way and then return to the open position. The door could be closed manually with much effort. Toyota fixed the problem in both instances."

Prager J., MA (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Had a recall on the drivers side sliding door. The dealer kept the car for 3 days, said they could not figure out how to put it back together. When I got it back, the door would not lock, it popped open when I hit a big bump, and it rattled like crazy. The dealer wanted to charge me over $800.00 to fix it. I complained and received 3 different case numbers from Toyota over this issue that the corporation never followed up on. Finally I looked up Toyota USA COO and got in touch with him. He assigned me to someone with SE Toyota. She sent me to another dealership who found out, not only did the dealer install the door panel incorrectly but broke the door latch trying to put it back together. After this experience together with some other instances with Toyota, I will never buy another one. Life is too short trying to deal with a company who does not support their products. We have owned Toyota's since 2003, it seems in the last few years they have gone down hill."

Gregg T., AL (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Recall for sliding door mechanism; still makes clicking sounds when operating."

Anonymous, NC (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"warranty work replace wiring harness sliding doors could open while vehicle is in motion"

Brian R., CA (2014 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"The left rear passenger sliding door: One of the cables that opens the door broke - due to rusting out, located tucked along the rear window ledge. I couldn't open the door, even if the opening switch was turned off. First, I inquired on-line about other Sienna owners having the same cable-breakage problem, and found unsatisfactory outcomes. Then I called my Toyota dealer, but ended up taking the vehicle to a local body shop. They ordered the cable part they thought would be required. But upon working on the door, it was discovered that a second motor part was also needed. At a cost of over $1,800, we scrapped the repair and disconnected the opening mechanism. I now manually open and close the door. So far the right passenger sliding door still works."

Glass defects

"windshield stress crack"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Toyota Sienna SE 3.5-L V6)
Locks and latches

"Fuel filler door hinge fatigued and the assembly needed to be replaced. Before replacement the left sliding door was not usable because the fuel filler lid safety latch plunger would not depress to disengage the latch."

Anonymous, WV (2014 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"Front door latch broke."

Anonymous, VA (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The gas door hinge failed resulting in left sliding passenger door being inoperable. Hinge became partially detached due to premature wear and probably rust as well. Not under warranty or recalled so had to be replaced at a cost of $400. Hinge and door are one unit plus paint hence the expensive repair. Body shop tells me its a common problem with Siennas"

Gary M., ON (2014 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)
Mirrors

"Both the driver and passenger outside mirrors became lose...they would move from there stable position about a quarter of an inch."

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"1. Backup camera screen often washed out or blocked due to the sun which 100% negates its usefulness. I have rented 3 cars on vacation trips in past 24 months. All 3 had excellent screen view of backup camera including superimposed lines showing where I was headed related to the current position of the steering wheel, which is an excellent & missing feature on my car."

Anonymous, MA (2014 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"The back-up camera that came with my 2014 Sienna is the poorest excuse of a back-up camera I have ever seen. It might as well not have one, poor resolution, almost black and white, and the depth visuals are non-existent."

Gregg T., AL (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)
CD player

"The CD player stopped working in the 37 month of ownership, 20,000 miles. The dealer has not been supportive, claiming that they had no employee trained to address the problem, and their only solution was for us to give them $1,640 to replace the radio unit"

Chris L., SC (2014 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"Their was a fan noise coming from the dash. CD player had to be replaced"

Todd J., WA (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"CD Player quit working. Took Toyota over 6 weeks to replace the CD Player. After 4 trips to the dealership where we were called in for an appointment and then told they didn't have it in stock it was finally fixed. Toyota did nothing to compensate"

Peter R., GA (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)
Display screen difficult to see

"NY State law requires that headlights be on when windshield wipers turned on. When headlights are on (except for dark night,). When we switch headlights on, the display darkens to point it's unreadable. Actually, *every aspect* of the radio, GPS, phone voice instruction, etc, sucks!!"

Roger D., NY (2014 Toyota Sienna SE 3.5-L V6)

"The screen is not only impossible to see in the daytime, causing distraction, it is overall a huge pain to use. I would rather have "old school" knobs and buttons for selecting audio and changing settings. The touch screen has to be touched very firmly to even respond and there are too many menus to get to simple selections while driving. Knobs and buttons were so much more to the point and simple to figure out"

Anonymous, ID (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Screen easy to see when it's not a sunny day, but IMPOSSIBLE to see at all when the day is clear and/or even somewhat bright"

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"Display very confusing & very distracting. Even my electronics-savvy grandson has trouble with using it: EG: setting location in nav system, tuning radio stations. When paired with iPhone for media, it forces "shuffle all." In One word = STUPID!"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)
Display screen goes blank

"The display screen for the radio will periodically flicker or go completely blank. It usually lasts for less than a couple minutes, and does not occur again. There seems to be no pattern to the occurrences. Because of the randomness, the tech I spoke to at the dealership wasn't sure that anything could be done."

Anonymous, GA (2014 Toyota Sienna SE 3.5-L V6)

"The screen goes black and then back to normal for a few seconds and then black again. Happens mostly when the outside temp is below 40 degrees or so."

Anonymous, TN (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"You can not see or use this system in normal daylight. Not pleased with system at all"

Anonymous, IL (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Have iPhone with Verizon. Phone connection to Bluetooth often gets dropped or will not connect. No one at dealer, Apple or Verizon ever able to solve problem"

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"The Bluetooth firmware does not connect automatically with our phones, and we need to reconnect it manually every time we want to use it. It's a significant hassle that would be easy for Toyota to fix"

Benjamin R., WI (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"No adult over 45 can operate the system. Our 20-something kids can figure it out after a while. Very confusing."

Anonymous, MA (2014 Toyota Sienna SE 3.5-L V6)
Radio

"Had to have complete radio, CD, steering control replaced. First it went blank occasionally, then no finger controls worked , then no picture for back up camera"

Anonymous, FL (2014 Toyota Sienna L 3.5-L V6)

"radio is impossible to tune safely whille driving. Other than volume, all the controls require looking at the screen and then pushing buttons displayed on the screen. We have laws against texting while driving, but the car manufactures are allowed"

Anonymous, WA (2014 Toyota Sienna SE 3.5-L V6)

"The display brightness would vary in the first radio. A fan or something was running in the second one even when the van was turned off"

Anonymous, OK (2014 Toyota Sienna Limited 3.5-L V6)

"changing radio stations is very inconvinent. You have to hit too many screen buttons and the screen is impossible to see in normal day light. Very bad design"

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Alignment

"5 days after driving the NEW van off the lot it started pulling to the left. We took it back to the dealer for realignment two different times before the issues was resolved. Realignment on a new car is completely unacceptable"

Anonymous, MN (2014 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)
Shocks or struts

"Had to replace most of front suspension. Control arms and struts and shocks"

David L., CA (2014 Toyota Sienna L 3.5-L V6)

"second time that the struts tie rods had a problem with this vehicle. They were covered out of warranty under a good will cover by Toyota due to this being a second mini van we owned plus owning Lexus vehicles."

"Leaking strut. Battle with dealer over whether it is "oil evaporation" or a bad part"

Anonymous, MD (2014 Toyota Sienna SE 3.5-L V6)
