Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2016 Toyota Sienna owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"replaced the radiator at 1000 mi."

Bob F., NC (2016 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Sunroof leaked water from the time of purchase that I had to pay for ($200) to Toyota. They would not cover cost and was not fixed after 3 trips for repair. Toyota recommended I take to someone else. I did and they found leak in replacing windshield at a cost of$ 600+. I negotiated with the Dealer to pay half. The Sienna was certified but it had been wrecked! They denied. I had a signed statement from them that there was no damage. The windshield that was replaced was an after market. Also the drivers door has no sound insulation unlike the passengers door and there is red over spray paint under the car."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"the seals around the roof rack were leaking into the car. when I drove the car through an automatic car wash the blue soap stained the inside passenger sun visor and around the windshield frame. Also had to get the seals around the trunk replaced twice due to rain and car wash water pooling in trunk. None of this was covered by the original manufactures warranty or the extended warranty I purchased."

Roderick B., TN (2016 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)
Seals and/or weather-stripping

"The sliding door seals have been abrading and tearing."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"Leaking around the windshield"

Anonymous, GA (2016 Toyota Sienna Limited 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, OH (2016 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Back passenger seat squeaks and rattles much of the time, as is something metallic is loose in the seat. Six trips to dealership have not resolved problem"

Renee P., MD (2016 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Brakes squeal sometimes in your turns"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Second row seat squeeks when not in use"

Stephen L., IL (2016 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"We heard rattles on both sides near the sliding doors. I took it to Toyota for the 10000 mile update. The service advisor said the mechanic found some rattles in the rear past the sliding doors. But, we still have some rattles over rough pavement"

Anonymous, IL (2016 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"LOTS OF RATTLES/NOISE FROM DOORS AND OVERHEAD"

Anonymous, MA (2016 Toyota Sienna Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Popping noise from rear of vehicle"

Anonymous, CO (2016 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"We have tried to determine the source(s) of the noises. We emptied the area where where the jack is stored, , emptied all the cubbies, and tightened the spare under the vehicle. We could NOT find the source(s) of the rattles. I had to use the spare before replacing the tires at 23,000 miles. It was hard to lower the spare without shredding the floor insulation and when the new tires were installed, they couldn't replace the spare because of lift used."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"Both sliding door windows developed significant rattles over time. Both were addressed by the service department, but it took several rounds for at least one door. The rattles were loud enough to cause distress to the drivers."

Anonymous, OR (2016 Toyota Sienna Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Rattles in the back of the van probably coming from the seats."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, MI (2016 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"just purchased this vehicle, took back for squeak and rattle. nothing found. I will be taking it back"

Raymond S., FL (2016 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"2nd row seat driver's side rattles. It sounds like the seat is loose in the tracks. Dealer has tightened all the bolts associated with the seat and we still have the rattle. I guess we will just live with it."

Anonymous, OK (2016 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The radio and display screen constantly turned off or went blank. We took to the dealer for repair 5-6 times. Even the backup camera would not function properly. You could see what was behind you but the lines wouldn't show you where you were going and wouldn't beep if someone was behind you. The dealer finally did an update to the software and the problem was fixed"

Anonymous, AR (2016 Toyota Sienna Limited 3.5-L V6)

What Owners Say

Body control module

"Sliding rear doors had intermittent failure to close"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Since we started with this lease, we've had problems. First issue which was never corrected (they couldn't find problem & its not always, but the passenger door behind the driver side would always get stuck and would open very slowly, especially during the winter months. Another was towards the start of the lease, the automatic (no key) start up gave me trouble a few times, actually leaving me stranded, where a tow & lift was needed. Since those experiences, I was never fully comfortable with the reliability of the car, and before this minivan, we had lease and purchased from honda (odyssey) which made me regret moving over to toyota brand. Another issue we had for the entire lease was the rugs for the minivan would not fit, and constantly move around - were poorly made. I feel it was not the correct rugs for the model, but the dealer would assure me it was. Meanwhile, they were horrible. Another issue (this may have user issue) was the middle seat was very hard to move forward & back to allow the passengers access to the last row"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"rear passenger door would have intermittent problems closing when using the open/close button"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)
Keyless entry

"I'm not sure this is the right area for the problems I had. The car started itself. I had turned off the motor and was exiting the car when the ENGINE STARTED ITSELF. Other times, the car does not always start. If it doesn't start the first try it starts on the 3rd try, occasionally the 8th try before it starts. Dealer was unable to fix the problem and then became unwilling to even try to fix the multitude of problems we experienced. We purchased the 2016 Sienna May 21, 2016 and traded it in for"

Anonymous, AR (2016 Toyota Sienna Limited 3.5-L V6)
Tire pressure monitor

"The warning lights would go on even when nothing was wrong, and I know weather may impact some, but I would have the tire pressure check or go to the dealer after a light goes on and they couldn't tell me why, and just reset the warning signs."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, IL (2016 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, MA (2016 Toyota Sienna Limited 3.5-L V6)

"First there was a recall that we needed to take the car in for to get the sliding door corrected. Now, about a year later, one of our automatic sliding doors is making terrible noises as it opens and closes. We're afraid it'll get stuck open or closed so we have to take it in to the shop again."

Anonymous, TN (2016 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"Driver side sliding door rubbed all the paint off the exterior where it was rubbing while opening & closing. This was not covered by the extended warranty. The door had to be worked on and the body repainted, $575."

Paul B., NC (2016 Toyota Sienna Limited 3.5-L V6)

"in the first 10,000 miles I had to replace the brakes rotors in the front wheels twice because they warp and Toyota did not want to cooperate I had to go to a private mechanic shop to solve the problem"

S C., CA (2016 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)
Pulsation or vibration

"Know issue. Tsb removes air dam to allow better cooling and replaces the brake pads. They should be replacing rotors with better quality and better semi metallic pads."

Anonymous, MA (2016 Toyota Sienna Limited 3.5-L V6)
Rotors

"they just get hot and warp, I owned two other Toyota sienna before this one and had no problem with brakes, I'm sure they have changed the alloy to save money, but they won't admit it,,"

My 1st set of tires were bald after only 25,000 - and the dealer told me that is "normal" for Sienna AWD models; something I was not warned about when purchasing the vehicle. This is important because the AWD Sienna utilizes very expensive Run-Flat tires"
