Performance
Acceleration Acceleration Acceleration tests are conducted on a smooth, flat pavement straightaway at the track. Time, speed, and distance measurements are taken with a precise GPS-based device that’s hooked to a data-logging computer.
0 to 60 mph 0 to 60 mph (sec.) The time in seconds that a vehicle takes to reach 60 mph from a standstill with the engine idling.
Transmission Transmission Transmission performance is determined by shifting smoothness, response, shifter action, and clutch actuation for manual transmissions.
Fuel Economy Fuel Economy We perform our own fuel-economy tests, independent of the government's often-quoted EPA figures and the manufacturers' claims. Using a precise fuel-flow measuring device spliced into the fuel line, we run two separate circuits to represent city and highway consumption.
CR's Overall Mileage CR's Overall Mileage CR's overall mileage is a composite of measured fuel usage on a prescribed city course and highway cruising; and CR's 150-mile test trip of mixed driving, if tested. In recent road tests, we've discontinued the 150-mile trip test.
CR's City Mileage CR's City Mileage Measured fuel usage on a prescribed city course.
CR's Highway Mileage CR's Highway Mileage Measured fuel usage on a prescribed highway cruising.
Annual Fuel Cost Annual Fuel Cost The cost and amount of fuel used in 12,000 miles and is calculated from CR's overall mileage.
Braking Braking The braking rating is a composite of wet and dry stopping distances and pedal feel. Braking distance is from 60 mph, with no wheels locked.
Emergency Handling Emergency Handling Several factors go into the rating, including the avoidance maneuver speed and confidence, as well as how the vehicle behaves when pushed to its limit.

Owner Reports

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

"When the truck was first bought (new) the radio began to randomly turn on and/or off as I drove. The dealer fixed it by replacing the radio - this seemed to work for a month or so. The second complaint, also under warranty, was a repair by the dealer which again worked for a month or so. Again the radio began to power itself up and/or down randomly. I have tried to find the problem myself since then with no success. So I have lived with it for the past 7-8 years. Bumps, speed, weather, radio settings, nothing seems to be a trigger - just randomly occurs, on the average every 10-20 minutes. Since I don't spend much time in the vehicle I continue to live with it. And on and on it goes!!"

"Rough transmission at about 42 mph. It acts like running on a rumble strip. I don't know if its the solenoid but I want to record that I have this transmission problem. This topic is discussed on the Internet as a problem for Tacoma of this age. Usually it is called a 'shudder' but I don't think that is a good word for it. A shudder goes away quickly but I can make my transmission shudder indefinitely provided I drive it just above 40 mph. Only by speeding up or slowing down will it go away. The shudder seems to be stable and not deteriorating."

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Clutch replacement

"The clutch problem occurred as a result of mice moving into the clutch assembly, getting decimated and creating a slurry which caused the clutch to engage correctly. While it wasn't a typical mechanical failure caused by wear and tear, it seems to fall on Toyota's inability to protect this vehicle from mice moving in. They are regulars in the cabin air filter, and have even taken up residence in the truck's headliner - after chewing through two wiring harnesses and causing significant damage."

Peter M., MA (2009 Toyota Tacoma Base 2.7-L 4 Cyl)

"While the issue was caused by mice moving into the clutch housing, the repair involved the need to replace parts which had been changed since the vehicle was built. This resulted in additional costs added to the repair. In fairness to Toyota, they agreed to absorb 1/3 of the cost of the $1500 replacement"

Anonymous, NH (2009 Toyota Tacoma Base 2.7-L 4 Cyl)

"I purchased the truck used from a reputable dealer. I noticed that the clutch released very close to the top of its travel, though it did not slip under any conditions. I removed it and found that while the clutch friction surface had little wear, two of the six torsion springs were broken. I replaced the pressure plate, pilot bearing, throw-out bearing and disc. Even with the new clutch it still releases a bit closer to the top than I would like, but I know that it is new and strong and will not be an issue."

Gordon J., AB (2009 Toyota Tacoma Base 2.7-L 4 Cyl)
Torque converter

"With trailer towing option from factory: manual and all written information shows tow capability of 6500 lbs. My 6 cylinder eng has great difficulty towing a 2016 16' lightweight travel trailer of MVGW 4500 lbs. 3500 lbs empty, and still has a hard time. I was worried trans or eng would fail me"

Totally intermittent, nothing helps situation: turn steer wheel, take in/out of gears (automatic trans), repeatedly turn ignition on/off, move truck 5 feet in gear, NOTHING helps, will just turn over and start when key turned, and when does start will hesitate like an old carb engine like it has been flooded. Sometimes wait times to start as turning key on/off is 15"
