Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2016 Toyota Tacoma owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"sounds like the windows are open a crack while driving"

Bruce B., VT (2016 Toyota Tacoma SR5 3.5-L V6)

"Water leaking through window seals"

Anonymous, CT (2016 Toyota Tacoma SR5 3.5-L V6)

"water leaking from 3rd brake light into rear interior of the vehicle causing mildew problems"

Anonymous, MD (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 3.5-L V6)

"Told by dealer that the water from the air conditioner condensation leaked from a clog in the hose that runs under the carpet in the rear compartment. This of course is not a warranty item. It took a while and a lot of effort to get rid of most of the mildew smell."

Anonymous, MD (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 3.5-L V6)
Seals and/or weather-stripping

"Toyota’s small trucks have always been good in the more important ways (reliability), but have also always been tin cans."

Anonymous, MN (2016 Toyota Tacoma)

"Driver side window seal were defective causing major howling sounds in windy conditions"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 3.5-L V6)

"the seal around the third brake light leaked ad one around the rear glass."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 3.5-L V6)

"some squeaks when going over bumps"

Bruce B., VT (2016 Toyota Tacoma SR5 3.5-L V6)

"Buzzing noise at steady speed 1500 to 1800 rpm"

Anonymous, KS (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 3.5-L V6)

"Right front cab mount was installed incorrectly and needed to be replaced. Rear leaf springs squeaked - leaf springs had to be cleaned. I also took the vehicle in to have the ATF checked. Reports in Tacomaworld suggested that many with the tow package were low on ATF"

John B., NJ (2016 Toyota Tacoma SR5 3.5-L V6)

"Brand new vehicles should not have rattles in the first 12 months. The problem was a piece of the hand hold on the passenger side somehow was not fit correctly at the factory and started to rub against the dash. Super annoying"

Anonymous, UT (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 3.5-L V6)

"rattles from passerger side"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 3.5-L V6)

"Rattles in dash. Can't seem to find it. Very annoying"

Anonymous, MN (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 3.5-L V6)

"I noticed noises coming from the rear while driving. Later I discovered that Toyota is in the process of issuing a recall due to a problem with the rear differential. I'm awaiting the recall notice from Toyota so that I can take it in for inspection and repair"

Valerie R., CA (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 2.7-L 4 Cyl)

"Interior of truck. A rattles/squeaks coming from the passenger (front) Unable to locate source of noise. Bringing in vehicle to dealer next week to fix this noise"

David H., GA (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 3.5-L V6)

"I noticed a squeak in front of my truck. The dealer body shop told me my front bumper had been hit and the bumper bracket was bent. You could not see anywhere the bumper was hit and they showed me a picture of the bracket, it was really thin. I have never hit anything and am about the only one who drives this truck. I just think that a bumper should take a 5mph hit or something like that before the bracket bends. Also they told me my back bumper was hit and on one side the bracket bent. You could actually see a tiny ding mark in this bumper. I park my truck out away from other cars and haul firewood and bicycles in it most, its not used for work or abused. Pretty wimpy bumper brackets if you ask me."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 3.5-L V6)

"Bushings went bad but were covered under warranty"

Walter K., GA (2016 Toyota Tacoma 2.7-L 4 Cyl)

"There is a part somewhere in the door post area between the front and back door that rattles. The dealer couldn't find anything when the vehicle was under warranty."

Charles R., MN (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 3.5-L V6)

"A lot of noise both inside and out"

Gerald W., MT (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 3.5-L V6)

"The bed rattles as though screws are loose. Service department hasn't been able to do anything to end the rattle."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Toyota Tacoma SR5 2.7-L 4 Cyl)
Wind noise

"Loud when driving any speed"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Toyota Tacoma Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Much wind and tire noise"

D H., WY (2016 Toyota Tacoma 3.5-L V6)

"Extreme wind noise so loud that you have to increase volume to hear radio/Navigation"

Andrew B., NY (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 3.5-L V6)

"A whistling noise occurs at high speed in combination with strong winds"

Bryan T., TX (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 3.5-L V6)

"Can hear the wind noise on the driver and passengers doors, while driving westbound"

Ed A., CA (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 3.5-L V6)

"Howling noise during a crosswind. Weather seal around doors replaced. Helped but still there but much better"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 3.5-L V6)

"Wind noise from mirrors at or above 70mph"

Tony S., CA (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 3.5-L V6)

"Depending on the speed, wind direction and possibly temperature, the vehicle emits whistling noises"

Anonymous, TN (2016 Toyota Tacoma 2.7-L 4 Cyl)

"Vehicle has very loud road noise probably coming from rear wheels through rear air vents in cab."

Anonymous, TN (2016 Toyota Tacoma SR5 3.5-L V6)

"Wind noise around mirrors and windows. Very noisy overall in the cab. The dealer couldn't do anything about the noise while the vehicle was under warranty. The mirrors in my last Tacoma had the same problem. No more Tacoma's for us! Very poor workmanship!! Lousy upgrade. I don't imagine Toyota will do a major overhaul of this vehicle because they don't do it for approximately 10 years."

Charles R., MN (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 3.5-L V6)

"When driving at highway speeds, especially on windy days, there is a loud, almost constant sqealing wind noise coming from the front doors (both the driver's and passenger's side)"

Anonymous, NB (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 3.5-L V6)

"Drivers side window makes a loud fluttering noise driving at 65mph on the freeway. Sounds like the rubber trim on the top of the truck cab allows air underneath. Dealer couldn't find the problem."

Anonymous, UT (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 3.5-L V6)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"The vehicle is very slow to down shift to a lower gear. When driving in 2nd or 3rd gear and attempting to accelerate, the transmission up shifts to a higher hear resulting in an unexpected change / drastic slowing of acceleration. Also, between 20 and 40 mph, the vehicle rides at a very low rpm and shimmies / vibrates when you attempt to accelerate"

Gary T., AZ (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 3.5-L V6)

"Constant shifting on the smallest hills. Sluggish pickup on starting from a pause ( ie stop or yield)"

Anonymous, NS (2016 Toyota Tacoma 3.5-L V6)

"Problems returning to overdrive after acceleration"

Andrew B., NY (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 3.5-L V6)

"transmission shift flare between 3-4 gears. Delay in response time from a stop, and in stop and go traffic. Only when it is in s mode and set up to 5 gear does if feel some what normal. Very did appointed even after the trans updates. 1st one and rev 1. Still not acceptable"

George E., NJ (2016 Toyota Tacoma Limited 3.5-L V6)

"It's really a combination of the transmission and the transmission computer. I think the gearing is too steep and the computer always wants to be in a higher gear than is practical. This makes the driving experience frustrating especially in stop and go traffic. I ended up getting rid of the truck after about 14 months because I couldn't take driving it anymore"

Paul E., RI (2016 Toyota Tacoma SR5 3.5-L V6)

"Car surges when cold. Car shifts back & forth during slight inclines when driving"

Anonymous, TN (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 3.5-L V6)

"delayed shift in the morning from park to drive. While driving, it up-shifts too early. when braking, you can feel it down shift late. when i need a lower gear, i almost have to floor it to get it to downshift but then it down shifts too far. drives me craZY"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 3.5-L V6)

"Shifting was rough going up hills (automatic shifting). Complained about it 2 months after purchase but was told the software had to "learn" my driving habits. A software update came out a year later which made shifting less rough, but I'm still not happy with the transmission"

Anonymous, PA (2016 Toyota Tacoma Limited 3.5-L V6)

"When starting in the morning it would hesitate when shifting into drive. An update to the computer has corrected this"

Anonymous, AR (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 3.5-L V6)

"hard upshifts when driving in hilly areas. jumps gears between 50-60 mph. abrupt noise when coming to a stop. Like it won't go into neutral"

Anonymous, VT (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 3.5-L V6)

"Jerk going from reverse to forward . Hesitate when first starting."

Anonymous, AL (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 3.5-L V6)

"The shift points for this truck is terrible. Google it and you'll see it's a Tacoma epidemic! For me, it shifts too early from take off. On hills it can't decide what gear to be in. Sometimes shifting from park to drive the motor revs up and jumps into gear (safety issue). Very disappointed in the quality of this Toyota transmission!"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 3.5-L V6)

"The dealer told us of the rough shifting and the fact there was a software upgrade which fixed the problem."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 3.5-L V6)

"The 3.5 liter engine/six gear transmission is under powered vs the previous 4.0 lite/five gear models causing continual downshifting on any incline. Its loud, but weak. I want my 2013 Tacoma lease back. What a disappointment."

Anonymous, TN (2016 Toyota Tacoma SR5 3.5-L V6)

"The transmission remains (after computer adjustment) both rough shifting and slips?, actually, it often doesn't shift when it should."

William S., CA (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 3.5-L V6)
Slipping transmission

"The fluid in the transmission was low"

Anonymous, AR (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 3.5-L V6)

"Transmission was not correctly filled with fluid from the factory. Toyota denied there was a problem then claimed they filled it with fluid. After several return trips they actually filled the trans with fluid, now it goes into gear and shifts correctly"

Anonymous, OH (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 3.5-L V6)
Transmission computer

"When new, transmission shifts up and down constantly. After 6 months, a new transmission update came out. My transmission was updated. Much better, but not perfect"

Anonymous, NE (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 3.5-L V6)

"TSB on transmission on ill-developed computer programming. TSB took care of most of my complaints"

Jon K., MN (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 3.5-L V6)

"I was told the problem with the "slipping" was the computer program which was updated but now the shifting does not seem right at all times - I'm just not sure I can rely on it to last as long as I think it should"

Robert W., NJ (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 3.5-L V6)

"The shifting was sporadic and rough, especially when first operated (of the day) or going from reverse to forward."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 3.5-L V6)

"On deacceleration for a stop that doesn't warrant a stop, depressing the throttle pedal will give a jerk. In auto, the transmission doesn't shift properly. Driving in manual eliminates a lot of the transmission issues."

Lance L., TN (2016 Toyota Tacoma)
Transmission sensor or solenoid

"Broke down 2 times. They replaced the crank shaft sensor which fixed the problem for a month. Broke down a 3rd time but they couldn't find any additional problems. I was sent home without any fix so just waiting for the issue to occur again. Toyota corporate has been involved"

Anonymous, PA (2016 Toyota Tacoma Limited 3.5-L V6)

It worked fine for 6 or 7 months and then it went all haywire and we had to restore the phone to original settings and software for it to work again. Funny as It worked fine for months. In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"The Navigation is far too complicated can cause distracted driving.I use my Garmin GPS instead"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 3.5-L V6)

"Both vehicles have in-dash GPS systems. I inquired about updating the maps for both vehicles. I was told the cost was $300 per vehicle. I consider the cost to be extremely exorbitant and called Toyota to inquire about the issue. I was told by the representative I talked to that the cost is set by each dealer at their discretion. I was also told that some dealers provide map updates at no charge. I sent a letter to my dealer describing my experience and received no response. I contacted Toyota"

"phone not working when driving"

Anonymous, MA (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road 3.5-L V6)

"Phone paired but the nav and audio system in the dash kept stopping and starting. Was in the shop 4 times and updated but seemed to end up with my samsung 8 phone or contact list interfering with the electronics and when updated and removed and reinstalled it was fixed. The phone and dash nav and audio had worked for months and one day decided to go out of wack. I will never trust a self driving car as there are too many systems ans softwares that will never be quite right with all the auto makers and phonemakers with too many app:to al work properly all the time. Glad im getting old before the problems develop and surface. Might be that a certain brand of self driver will only work with brand x phones and certain apps. Good luck."

"Frequently when I attempt to play music via Bluetooth from my iPhone the music skips. I have to turn off then back on to resolve the problem"

Charles S., SC (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 3.5-L V6)

"The phone will un pair from the system and then the radio will restart. You then have to re pair the phone to the system"

Anonymous, GA (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 3.5-L V6)

"The radio system would regularly drop the phone connection. When this happened, the radio would turn off and restart. When that happened, all favorites and contacts were lost. Many times when a call was attempted the radio would appear to be dialing, as did the phone yet nothing was really happening and the phone and radio were then stuck in limbo. Toyota was totally aware of the problem and ultimately said they could not fix the problem. They basically told us to live with. it. They made no attempts to replace the unit. Their excuse was they couldn't find anything wrong, yet they openly admitted there was a problem that they could not fix. I ended up pulling the unit and replacing it with an after market one."

"Manufacturer recall issue. Rear differential leaks. It's not fixed and I have been advised to NOT drive the vehicle. Toyota providing a loaner until they determine the fix"

James J., FL (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 3.5-L V6)

"went in to local Toyota dealer for oil change, was advised there was a recall of 2016 Tacomas due to defective rear differential; have received no notice from Toyota about the recall; I asked if it would be safe to continue driving my Tacoma over the weekend, and was advised by a Toyota representative that it would be safe. Premature brake wear

"The truck brakes when applied going downhill would shutter. This brake issue began to occur with the truck only having 6,600 miles on it. This issue was likely warp rotors. I took it to the Dealership and found out that this is not covered under the 5 year warranty. I considered the truck to still be considered new due to the low mileage and therefore summed it up as a faulty brake system or premature wear on the braking system. I strongly implied to the Dealership Representative that this problem should be of no charge to me due to the low mileage and the cost of the truck that's being financed again at such a low mileage. The dealer did a bulletin search and discover that the 2016 Toyota Tacoma brake rotors do have a tendency in becoming warp (TSBT-SB-0313-17). The Dealer Tech resurfaced the rotors which has fixed the issue."

Anonymous, HI (2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 3.5-L V6)
