This generation of the Tundra was bulked up to take on Detroit's full-sized workhorses. Growing dramatically in size, but losing much of the refinement of the previous model, the Tundra, once considered the Camry of pickups -- fully-modern and easy to live with -- became one of the least refined and most dated. Shortcomings abound. Among them, the Tundra's ride is jittery, especially with the TRD off-road package.

Owner Reports

Worse Better
Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Build configurations and options were limited as well.

On the plus side, Tundra's 5.7-liter V8 produces effortless power and a still-competitive 15 mpg. Off-road capability is impressive, as is towing capacity. A neat feature is the hydraulically damped tailgate, which falls opens gracefully instead of flopping down.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2010 Toyota Tundra owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"Anti-lock brake light came on, it was taken to the dealer. The tech found the error was from the brake light switch. It was replaced and everything was fine after that"

Gregory P., IL (2010 Toyota Tundra Base 4.6-L V8)

"The ABS system failed due to a shorted wheel sensor."

Albert C., RI (2010 Toyota Tundra SR5 4.6-L V8)

"The abs, traction, and brake light are all on. It can still be driven but the abs and traction control do not work, so essentially it is like having a braking system from the 60's. To repair it I was quoted at $2500-3000 to repair, however the vehicle is only worth approximately $7000. My issue is that it is very expensive to repair."

Anonymous, CA (2010 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

Rotors

"Related to calipers"

Anonymous, NY (2010 Toyota Tundra Limited 5.7-L V8)

"Rotors were severely warped and vibrated hard during high speed braking. There was a recall to replace the heat shields around the rotors but Toyota made me pay out of pocket to fix because my model wasn't included in the recall"

Anonymous, AZ (2010 Toyota Tundra SR5 4.6-L V8)

"I was told by the dealer that 40000 plus miles was "acceptable" for rotors to wear out to the point of all 4 wheels needed replacing. I DISAGREE!"

Steering linkage (includes rack and pinion)

"During service was told that my rack and pinion is leaking fluid. Sad to say, this is the second Tundra that I have had that has had this issue.. The previous one was a 2004 Tundra which experienced the same issue with approx. the same mileage but was NOT as old (drove it more often that my current Tundra). Have not had it fixed it yet, the leakage just started to occur, saving up the money to fix it since it is NO longer under warranty"

Anonymous, UT (2010 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)
Steering wheel vibration

"Seem to have steering vibration at approx. 50 MPH. Have had the steering looked at (this is when I was notified that my Rack and Pinion assembly was starting to leak) but the dealer felt it was not necessarily causing the shimmy in my steering. Also had my tires rotated and rebalanced but has NOT corrected the problem. The dealer also felt that it was possibly bed bounce but I feel that is not what is causing the issue. As of yet, have not found what is causing the shimmy/vibration but ONLY"

Tie rods

"Right upper tie rod was cracked nearly all the way through, possible factory defect. Found by auto mechanic during alignment after purchasing new tires. This vehicle has never been in an accident nor drivin off road"

Tire wear is uneven

"Truck wears tire out in 28000. I am on 4th set of tires and had new struts and shock and several alignments but they can not figure why it wears tire out fast"

Wheel bearings

"There is a service bulletin for the wheel bearings wearing prematurely. The dealer failed to notify me or identify the issue. I had brought it in for a strange noise several times. New service department in FL identified it. Cost of $1,600 which should have been covered under warranty"

Michael V., FL (2010 Toyota Tundra 5.7-L V8)

"Can Consumer Reports or Consumer Union PLEASE advocate for us, to Toyota of North America? Toyota has wronged us over our CPO Toyota Tundra (~75,000 miles now), not honoring repairs under CPO warranty for known issues identified in TSBs. To be fair, the Toyota representative said the CPO warranty Insurer refused to cover the repairs, but I don't know how these things really work on the inside. The only trucks I have owned are both Toyotas (1994 DLX X-Cab 4WD and this 2010 Tundra DC 4WD SR5 TRD) I had reported a handful of issues to the Assistant SM (ASM), who wrote them ALL up on the same service report after inspection. Among those, a grinding noise from the rear wheels when turning; T-SB-0013-13 says bad rear wheel bearings allow excessive axle hub play, causing the brake rotors to rub against the brake backing plates. The ASM said the mechanic told her the noise was due to non-OEM rotors (I had replaced the warped factory rotors not many miles prior) and gave me an unbelievable estimate to replace the brake backing plates. This is laughable in light of what the TSB clearly identifies as the issue. TSBs for other issues I also reported with this vehicle: T-SB-0151-10: rear bearings growl when cold T-SB-0147-11: thunk from the rear at stop or off-idle T-SB-0101-12: rust-through in the bed floor (engineering/manufacturing issue from under the vehicle - I had installed a hard tonneau immediately after purchase to keep it dry inside) My wife and I have been avid, even rabid, Consumer Reports customers for 25+ years, trusting your unbiased approach to testing and rating products, which has served our family BEYOND well over the years. Corporations respect and fear CU/CR and we've witnessed this over the years through CR magazine and related news articles."

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"Hose, developed a leak. Mechanic checked system, he determined that a/c compression, was showing signs of wear and tear. Perhaps a failure , but not conclusive. I made the to have the tired a/c compressor replaced. I did not want to perhaps have a failure in the near future and pay for labor again. I was trying to be cost effective. My decision, was to replace the existing a/c compressor with a rebuilt part, which was cost effective. I paid, for the hose replacement, compressor, and labor, appx. $500."
