Toyota Venza

Change Vehicle
Toyota Venza 2009 4-door SUV
Trim Shown: Sport Utility
Difficult to classify, the Venza fits somewhere in between a station wagon and a SUV. Assets include easy cabin access, a quiet interior, and a roomy rear seat. The rear hatch and large cargo floor aid cargo flexibility. The refined 3.5-liter V6 engine provides plenty of power and 20 mpg overall. Handling is secure but the steering is short on feedback, hurting agility. The jittery ride is un-Toyota-like, partly a side effect of the V6's huge 20-inch wheels. Visibility is impaired by the styling. A rear camera helps when reversing, but its standard dashboard display screen is very small. Crash-test results are impressive.

Safety Equipment

ABS and ESC standard. Side and head protection air bags standard.

Road Test

While the Venza looks like a tall hatchback or an oddly proportioned station wagon, it's related to the previous-generation Toyota Highlander SUV. Targeted at former SUV drivers who want something less utilitarian for their daily drive, the Venza win...

  • Lots of space inside
  • Easy access through big doors

  • Stiff ride
  • Difficult driver visibility, especially out the rear

Best Version to Get

We'd skip the four-cylinder and go straight to the V6 version. Unfortunately, getting the V6 also forces you to get 20-inch wheels, which hurt the ride. Overall, the XLE is the best value.
