While the Venza looks like a tall hatchback or an oddly proportioned station wagon, it's related to the previous-generation Toyota Highlander SUV. Targeted at former SUV drivers who want something less utilitarian for their daily drive, the Venza winds up being less pleasant to drive than the bigger and more-refined Highlander.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Satisfaction Owner Satisfaction To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

While the Venza looks like a tall hatchback or an oddly proportioned station wagon, it's related to the previous-generation Toyota Highlander SUV. Targeted at former SUV drivers who want something less utilitarian for their daily drive, the Venza winds up being less pleasant to drive than the bigger and more-refined Highlander. Giant 20-inch wheels hurt the ride, and handling is nothing special, despite the Venza's lower ride height. The sloping roof inhibits cargo volume and the view out of the rear window. Thankfully, a rear camera became standard for 2015.

On the plus side, the Venza has plenty of room for passengers inside its very quiet interior and access is super easy. As in other Toyota products, the optional 3.5-liter V6 is refined and pulls strongly, although the Venza's 20 mpg overall in our tests is no better than the non-hybrid Highlander. We can't help thinking the Venza is an anachronism, fighting to win over an anti-SUV buyer who threw in the towel years ago.

"GPS stops working while using it for guidance"

Anonymous, VA (2013 Toyota Venza XLE 3.5-L V6)

What Owners Say

Calipers

"Seized"

Linda D., ON (2013 Toyota Venza LE 2.7-L 4 Cyl)

"At 35000 miles all 4 brake calipers needed replacing and rotors resurfaced. During repair dealer broke a bracket in rear wheel assembly that required replacement at another visit"

Bruce C., MD (2013 Toyota Venza LE 3.5-L V6)
Master cylinder

"1) Brake pedal (seemed to) travel too far (i.e.: at bottom of stroke it was even with or below the level of the accelerator pedal) and needed one pump to bring it up to "proper" height. 2) While sitting in traffic with brake steadily applied, the pedal would slowly sink to floor and needed to be pumped to bring it up to proper height. Toyota replaced master cylinder with no improvement --- independent shop said Toyota did not properly bleed the system to include the ABS causing air to be trapp"

Anonymous, FL (2013 Toyota Venza LE 2.7-L 4 Cyl)

"I report this only as an anecdotal comment; It may POSSIBLY have been a master cylinder problem!!! This Venza was purchased as an "off-lease" vehicle that h was fully serviced prior to resale. The problem we experienced was a low brake pedal that slowly sank to the floor but could be pumped to proper height. After several complaints I demanded that it be replaced under Toyota's certified used car warranty. Only after this was done did I subsequently learn (from a mechanic at an independent"

Anonymous, FL (2013 Toyota Venza LE 2.7-L 4 Cyl)

"Intermittently, the brake pedal would sink upon braking without applying good stopping force. Vehicle passed master cylinder pressure test. Dealer drove the car and replaced master cylinder due to internal leak. This solved the problem. Work was done under extended warranty purchased with this used vehicle"

Dianne D., ON (2013 Toyota Venza LE 2.7-L 4 Cyl)

"Needed new brake pads and rotors for all 4 wheels aft just under 24,000 miles. Very surprised at how early they needed replacement and that all 4 were needed at the same time"

David P., OH (2013 Toyota Venza XLE 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, UT (2013 Toyota Venza LE 2.7-L 4 Cyl)
Fuel pump

"went to start my car and it would not start. I tried several more times and the car started, luckily the toyota dealer is by my office"

Anonymous, FL (2013 Toyota Venza XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Although manufactured to use synthetic oil, gauge is factory preset to indicate oil change maintenance every 5000 rather than 10,000 miles. Very aggravating as Dealer cannot override and all dash visuals are negated by "maintenance required" warning"
