Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2016 Volkswagen GTI owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"Water leaks from the passenger side visor. Was told by VW service advisor that there is a drain there that is probably clogged so twice I had the drain in unclogged but after a rain storm the water pours out once the car is in motion. Also had an EPC issue recently for $650. Love you guys!"

Anonymous, (2016 Volkswagen GTI S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Air during HWY runs comes through kind of strong at times. Not bad to not be able to have a normal conversation."

Michael P., GA (2016 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Plastic water pump cracked and caused slow antifreeze leak, according to dealer rep. Loaner was provided and repair made under warranty in about an hour."

Donald E., NY (2016 Volkswagen GTI S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Leaked around sunroof. Was recalled &leak fixed & now dome light doesn’t work"

Anonymous, CT (2016 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"There was a slow coolant leak from a perforated hose. I was able to top up the level periodically to keep the system from alarming. Eventually, the frequency of filling was such that I took the car in for repair. Good news is that my GTI has a sensor for that, VW fixed it under warranty and provided a courtesy car during the 2-day down time."

Marc C., CA (2016 Volkswagen GTI 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Well my GTI suffered from a cracked sunroof frame which there was a technical service bulletin for (TSB). A TSB is ther version of an internal recall. I literally had water pouring in through my passenger side visor. They "patched" the roof and had to replace my headliner and carpets. When I went to pick the car up, they had washed it and the new headliner was soaked through. I ended up getting VW to buy this car back and I bought the Honda"

Jonathan N., MA (2016 Volkswagen GTI SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"cracked sunroof frame"

Anonymous, CT (2016 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Sunroof leaked water into passenger visor then into the cabin"

Anonymous, PA (2016 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Seals and/or weather-stripping

"The tail light gasket/seal developed a small leak after 4 years of ownership. As a result, rain water would collect between the metal panels in the truck. Ultimately fixing the leak only took minutes, but tracing the source of the leak took many hours as the leak was tiny and obscured behind layers of sheet metal."

Anonymous, WA (2016 Volkswagen GTI S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Groaning noise from door weather stripping when making turns into driveways as body flexes. Requires special lubrication applied to seals and weather stripping to stop noise."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Weather stripping/seals around the doors cause this weird flexing noise whenever the body of the car is flexing (such as driving over a gutter or going up an incline)."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Found water dripping out of overhead console after a heavy rain. Assumed to be a leak around sunroof weather seal (or possibly upper windshield). Only happened once. Has not happened in previous or subsequent hard rains or car washes. Sunroof had not been opened in the rain. Possibly a simple piece of trash (leaf, twig, etc.)"

Anonymous, AR (2016 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Squeaks or rattles

"Right rear ceiling, there seems to be a loose piece of insulation that moves around and squeaks when you hit a bump and then it goes back into position and doesn't squeak and then loosens again"

Anonymous, (2016 Volkswagen GTI S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Squeaking sound from sunroof occurs when outside temperatures are cold and happens when driving over bumps. Dealership could not reproduce problem. Still persists."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Volkswagen GTI SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Lots of rattles have come up in the car including center console, window controls on the driver's door, loud ratting on the rear driver's side door, etc. They have been very difficult to get under control and VW does not consider squeaks/rattles a warranty issue so they are somewhat hesitant to replace parts at many dealerships. I was only able to get a proper response to these issues when I went to the dealership at which I purchased the car, which was about an hour drive for me. The other issue I experience now is a squeaking noise coming from all of the seals around doors whenever the body of the car is flexing (e.g. driving through a dip in the road at an angle or speed bump, etc.). It's also very annoying."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Rattling noise in dash in upper portion of passenger's side."

Tyler R., MO (2016 Volkswagen GTI S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Items keep rattling in the interior, especially passenger side door and behind the speedometer. Passenger side door rattle was repaired, and behind the speedometer rattle 3 attempts have been made with no resolution. No wonder why VW only covers squeaks and rattles up to 1 year, 12,000 miles."

Nicola R., WA (2016 Volkswagen GTI S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Occasional squeaks from sunroof area on bumps and cold weather."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Volkswagen GTI SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Sunroof makes rattling sounds when car goes over bumps or vibrates. It has been back to the dealer at least 6 times but no fix has worked to date - 30 months later"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Volkswagen GTI SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Vibration noise in right front A pillar"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Volkswagen GTI S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"I've had continuous squeaks and rattles from the sunroof and rear passenger door area. Been to the dealer multiple times. The sunroof had 2 recalls, neither fix remedied the situation. At this point VW will no longer cover further issues with squeaks and rattles as those items are outside of the warranty. The dealer recommended fixes, but warranty wouldn't cover it. Very disappointed."

Sean B., WA (2016 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Persistent squeak and rattle in sunroof. 4 trips to service dept have yet to fix it"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Volkswagen GTI SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Window rubbed against seal when opening and closing creating noise"

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The sunroof trim squeaks when it gets wet. The dealer tried to fix it but they couldn't come up with a very good solution"

Daniel H., WA (2016 Volkswagen GTI SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Minor rattle started after hitting a number of potholes"

Joseph S., NJ (2016 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Anonymous, ON (2016 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Exterior lights (other than headlights)

"So my driver side parking light kept flickering. They replaced the socket because they said it was damaged. Turned out to not be that. They then replaced the body control module at which point my keys ceased to function from more than 5 feet away and sometimes the car wouldn't even recognize the key in the car. They were just happy the light was fixed. They replaced the body control module again and that fixed the keys"

Jonathan N., MA (2016 Volkswagen GTI SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Headlights

"Right front headlight swivel module ceased to function. $1000 repair bill to fix. Needed to replace entire headlight housing."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Volkswagen GTI SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Ballast was not connected."

Jack C., CO (2016 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The front right headlight assembly had a leak in it which shorted out the whole assembly. When it was opened up , everything was rusty indicating it had been that way since I purchased the car. At first they said it wasn't a warranty item but I convinced them otherwise."

Robert S., TX (2016 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Interior lights

"When sun roof replaced dome light stopped working"

Anonymous, CT (2016 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Water pump

"I had to replace the water pump for the second time since purchasing the vehicle new."

Anonymous, PA (2016 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Anonymous, PA (2016 Volkswagen GTI SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Pump was leaking coolant so had to be replaced. Got it in time before coolant was out entirely."

Robert C., NY (2016 Volkswagen GTI SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Automatic climate control

"Heat sensors were not telling the heater to maintain temperatures, set at 20 then goes cold, turn to 21 and after 10 minutes....Cold. On a 100 kilometre trip we would have to adjust the heat every 10 minutes or so, no comfortable setting."

Kari S., BC (2016 Volkswagen GTI S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Condenser

"Dealer first thought it was refrigerant leak issue which we have been watching since purchasing the car. Ultimately the issue was a bad weld on the A/C condenser. I could not be repaired and had to be fully replaced."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Evaporator

"After about 6 months, bad smell from air conditioner. One dealer, out of town, fixed it once,. The dealer I leased the car from wasted my time, service dept. acted like there wasn't a problem. This is a known problem of this German car, and a German company makes a product to fix the problem. And this dealer acted like there was no problem, and that included VW of America, since I contacted them as well. So, ,I am not pleased with the dealer or the company's service. I bought the product, a can of deodorizer of a special type, and I fixed the problem myself. (it involves taking a few things apart to get the spray to the evaporator Will have to repeat the procedure about every 6 months. But otherwise the car is so good, fast, great brakes, nice ride, good infotainment system which is easy to figure out, and relatively quiet for a hatchback--kind of like an inexpensive Audi--and no other problems. I plan to buy the car when the lease is up."

Michael Z., CA (2016 Volkswagen GTI S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Alignment

"Alignment issues caused uneven tire wear and need for early replacement (I elected to wait given sufficient tread). Alignment issue is not indicated from performance rather noisy rear tire normally something I normally assume is a tire balance issue. Dealer says GTI alignment is touchy. Not something I want to worry about having checked without symptoms. I might not retain vehicle past warranty, as a result."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Wheel bearings

"Wheel bearings fail on passenger front wheel. Volkswagen blamed me for the problem. Not covered under warranty by about 400 miles. Real customer service champs"

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Turbo or supercharger

"The car would lose power suddenly even when I kept steady pressure on the gas pedal. The car would suddenly regain power. After the second episode the dealer diagnosed it as a turbocharger problem. They replaced the turbocharger under warranty. There have been no problems since."

Anonymous, MA (2016 Volkswagen GTI S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"failed"

Anonymous, MA (2016 Volkswagen GTI S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

David K., WA (2016 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Transmission rebuild or replacement

"Transmission starting acting up at 36K. Under warranty but needed to be replaced. For whatever reason Volkswagen recommened clutch replacement at the same time. Clutch was not covered and would cost north of $800. Argued with Volkswagen that the clutch was an integral part of the transmission and should be included. They settled for $400. Not happy"

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Volkswagen GTI 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Power Equipment

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, remote engine start, alarm or security system

Spark plugs or wires failure

"Spark plug failures caused engine to misfire."

Anonymous, PA (2016 Volkswagen GTI S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Peggy S., ME (2016 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Difficult to fill up gas tank

"The gas tank on my GTI and many other GTIs are of a faulty design. Its difficult to fill. During fillup at gas stations the first click would happen very early, when there is still room for couple more gallons fuel. For the remaining portion after first click, you'd have to fillup very slowly and caredully. VW replaced my gas tank and some other parts to mitigate the issue. Living in Oregon where I can not take my own gas, it was very difficult for me. Before the fix from VW, i would be able to"

Anonymous, OR (2016 Volkswagen GTI S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Fuel leaks

"there was a recall for smell of fuel, we had issue corrected"

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Volkswagen GTI SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say
