With its smooth ride, elegant cabin, and extensive list of safety features, the Passat remains our top choice among family sedans. Cornering is competent, with quick, nicely weighted steering and minimal body lean. The GLS model we tested handled securely and completed our double-lane-change avoidance maneuver with impressive ease.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"The five speed manual transmission and turbo charged 4-cyl. provides plenty of acceleration. The car handles extremely well even though its a station wagon. Very sporty in many ways."

Fred M., ME (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"This car drives like a sports car - responsive handling, quick pickup - in a "soccer mom" exterior."

Anonymous, PA (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"Excellent handling with good road feel through the steering wheel. Acceleration is good enough for merging and passing. Engine loves to be driven on long road trips and gets smoother the longer it has been running."

Anonymous, WA (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"Handling is excellent for a four-door sedan, suspension is excellent (perfect match of control and comfort). The engine has good power and torque, but only at the higher end. Low end torque is weak, and the engine knocks under power below 3000 RPM. No gas brand or mechanic has been able to correct the knocking."

G M., CA (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"right turning radius excellent acceleration triptonics"

D W., WI (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"Excellent handling. Has the Audi A4 front end for that model year."

Anonymous, DE (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"A firm, controlled ride, combined with excellent steering feel makes this a very good driver's car. The only sour note is that the 1.8l turbocharged engine can surge a bit."

Stephen G., CA (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"Handles very well, fun to drive."

Anonymous, MA (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"Reliability"

Dieter O., NJ (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"With the four cylinder turbo motor the car has impressive acceleration and handles especially well on the twisty uneven roads I have driven most of the time. The car is seventeen years old and has nearly 100,000 miles and still runs and handles almost like new."

David W., PA (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"This car drives competently and handles sharply for excellent accident avoidance. the V6 engine is the best suited engine in my opinion for this sedan providing good acceleration and enough juice to cruise on a road trip."

Anonymous, CA (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"This car turns on a dime - tight radius."

Anonymous, IN (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"This car has an eight cylinder engine for outstanding performance. Brakes and suspension are tuned to provide excellent control and an exceptional driving experience. It's a joy to drive."

Kenneth K., CT (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"Despite VW's reputation for less than great reliability I've had no major problems with my Passat. It's 14 years old and still has original clutch, exhaust system, and suspension parts. The car is as tight and rattle free as the day I bought it. It's a joy to drive."

F W., IL (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"The acceleration and mileage have never been great. It seems like both should be better, considering the rest of the car. I suspect that something is not working properly but don't have the funds to track it down. I do put in 91 octane only because I know it is necessary because it is designed for better octane than that, which is only available in Europe. It does handle great. Very solid there. Very."

Anonymous, NV (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"After almost 300,000 miles the car still handles very well and the engine runs smoothly with good acceleration."

CARL P., NY (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"I have a v6. Plenty of acceleration when needed yet gets respective mpg for its day. The handling is well above average for it's day. I would recommend this car."

TREY G., CA (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"My 2002 Passat drives like a sports car-very responsive, ergonomic and comfortable. Any problems in the last year have been minor, and readily fixed. Considering the age of this car, I've been blessed."

PATRICIA V., NC (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"The finest car I have ever driven as far as handling. For being a older car, it is as responsive & 'tight' as the 1st day I bought it. The paint job has been excellent. One very small spot of rust developing.Even though I have had some major repair work done, I have been very satisfied with this car. If they weren't so expensive now, I would be considering another to replace this one eventually."

Anonymous, CT (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"Good handling"

DAVID N., IN (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Leather seats are comfortable, however, noise and ride are degrading faster (not bad for a car 15 years old). Leather seats are suffering from dry rot (minimal care)."

Anonymous, MD (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"The car isn’t too noisy, but the lumbar supports in the front seats are too present, and make it increasingly uncomfortable on long trips."

Sam D., IN (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"Seats are very comfortable and easily adjustable. The ride is smooth and quiet."

Fred M., ME (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"Seats are very comfortable and fully adjustable. The ride is smooth and noise levels are low."

Anonymous, WA (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"Heated seats is what saved us when the heater wasn’t working in the winter months. It has a very smooth ride of course if tires or axcle are good. Sound and comfort is awesome it’s the cost of repair that is the worst part of owning a passat"

Thomas L., MN (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"This car has a firm, but comfortable, ride. The optional leather seats are very long-range comfortable and contribute to the overall feeling of quality."

Stephen G., CA (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"Very comfortable for long rides"

Anonymous, DE (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"Ride is very comfortable"

B B., CA (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"Seats are comfortable and don't tax you on a road trip. The ride is pleasent and really smoothes out on the highway. Overall a good comfortable family sedan. The tensil strength on this model year is solid making for a fairly quiet cabin. The leather trim has worn a tad over the years on the drivers seat."

Anonymous, CA (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"Fun to drive, comfortable seats."

DAVID N., IN (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"Rides better than the 2016 Passat while test driving new cars!"

Anonymous, CA (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"It's a very comfortable car, not noisy smooth ride solid car"

Anonymous, IL (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"climate control is quick and cools the interior down quickly. The noise is below average (good) and the ride is solid and drives like a car with a wider wheel base. The ride is responsive but does have some roll with sudden, abrupt turns."

TREY G., CA (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"Absolutely excellent. I have heated seats and a sunroof which have both been awesome and never a problem. Also, having owned an 88' 626, 91' Festiva, 99' Altima, and driven my sister's 2010 corolla, 92' achieva, & 95, geo prism... My favorite car for comfort, interior design & layout and interior bells and whistles has been my 2002 passat. VW wins here and seems to think of all the little things that I've seen all the others miss and I now know why VW owners are so loyal."

Anonymous, NV (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"The driver's seat is too low for short people even though it has some height adjustment. It's hard to see the right-hand side of the car."

LORETTA F., MA (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"At almost 130,000 miles, I continue to do recommended service (at dealership) every 5,000 miles. Sure, a car this age has it's fair share of issues, however ongoing costs are less than a new car, the car runs great, and overall dependability has been great in my opinion. The car is well worth the amount I bought it for and have invested into it in upkeep."

Anonymous, OH (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"This car has been such a workhorse. I would buy another one in a second, but they don't make the wagon anymore. We've driven it for 17 years, put over 175K miles on it, and it's only now starting to show its age."

Anonymous, PA (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"No breakdown in 15 plus years. Fun to drive Exaleratin"

D W., WI (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"Purchased in 2002, the retail price was very competitive. The car is very roomy for four people. Fit and finish are impeccable, and after 16 years the interior shows almost no wear, all knobs and accessories are in great shape, and there are no rattles. The manual clutch has 140K miles on it and shows no sign of giving up! On the other hand, maintaining the engine has not been a bargain. In particular the ignition system (coils) have been replaced several times, and other work has averaged over $1000/year for the last 12 years"

G M., CA (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"Very good handling and excellent reliability"

Dieter O., NJ (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"Paid $ 22,000 in 2002, which seemed like a lot, but the car has been basically trouble-free for 16 years. The paint is in perfect shape, no rust, and the styling does not look outdated at all. In fact a brand new VW Golf Sportwagen looks very similar."

Anonymous, PA (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"I do not think another car of comparable value would last as long as this one. Most of my problems with engine were because of dealer inability to fix right the first time."

Anonymous, MD (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"After more than 200,000 miles its still a reliable car.15 years on the road and looking for many more."

Michael S., FL (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"Very reliable car with very few repairs."

Dieter O., NJ (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"For the length of ownership fairly low maintenance"

Anonymous, IL (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"Car keeps going and is mostly what was expected."

Anonymous, NY (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"This car handles very well. It has a high safety rating and I have had very little problems with it. I still have the original clutch!"

Anonymous, PA (2002 Volkswagen Passat)

"Compared to previous cars I have owned, I find the Passat very expensive to maintain."

Anonymous, CA (2002 Volkswagen Passat)
