Introduced for 2012, Volkswagen's midsized sedan was redesigned and optimized for the American market. In other words, it grew larger than most of its competitors, lost some of that crisp European driving feel and became less expensive. Since then, continual changes have tweaked and honed the Passat.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for about 329,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2020 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2015 Volkswagen Passat owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Screen for backup system was very dark - had to get the backup camera replaced under warranty"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Volkswagen Passat SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The RNS 510 takes 15 seconds to turn on the backup camera after starting the car. This is my 5th car with a camera and not 1 has taken more than a few seconds...AT MOST! VW said the 15-20 seconds is withing their engineering specs and won't fix it"

Kirk P., WA (2015 Volkswagen Passat SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"The back up camera failed to work all the time and the Service Department indicated that they replaced the computer"

Anonymous, NV (2015 Volkswagen Passat TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"The backup camera is nearly useless as it can take up to a minute for it to come on. Frequently I've completed my backing up by the time the camera comes on, only to have it continue to operate for up to 30 seconds after I've started driving forward. Almost totally useless."

Anonymous, (2015 Volkswagen Passat SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"It has always had a 10 to 15 second lag before coming on when starting the vehicle after it has been parked. The manufacturer did not put in a big enough processor so the whole system, radio and camera have that significant lag. Manufacturer says too bad. Back up camera is mostly useless since I do not routinely warm up my car especially in the garage."

Anonymous, UT (2015 Volkswagen Passat SEL 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The system is so slow to loading that most of the time you can not use it. You could use it but you have to wait a long time."

Anonymous, ON (2015 Volkswagen Passat Unsure 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Display screen difficult to see

"Back up screen was dark when used with the back up camera"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Volkswagen Passat SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Display screen freezes up

"Just frustrating when you're counting on GPS and it keeps freezing. I did fix it twice and is currently working."

Anonymous, VA (2015 Volkswagen Passat SEL 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The system, which includes the radio and rearview camera are very delayed and take long periods of time before becoming active. After igniting the engine and changing gears to reverse, I am able to reverse out of my garage and driveway and drive do"

Anonymous, TX (2015 Volkswagen Passat TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"When trying to activate Bluetooth it does not always respond and the screen freezes up"

Steven R., IL (2015 Volkswagen Passat SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Freezing and slow response are normal for the horrible "upgraded" infotainment system known as the RNS510"

Kirk P., WA (2015 Volkswagen Passat SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"I am VERY disappointed with not only the display screen quality but also the slow responsiveness of this so called high end audio system to turn on and the dim screen. I had a 2012 with the standard audio that was a way better value. This is junk. Not worth the extra money, but it was part of the SEL package."

Max B., FL (2015 Volkswagen Passat TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Happens during trip after navigation is in progress. Problem isn't constant. Happens without prior symptoms. Clears up after car is turned off. Doesn't clear when turning radio/nav power button off even for multiple minutes."

Anonymous, OR (2015 Volkswagen Passat SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Entire system freezes up intermittently on start-up. Dealer would not do anything about it when it occurred under warranty because it would never do it for them, although they admitted the infotainment center as being problem prone in this model vehicle. Restarting the system by shutting down the entire vehicle for 5 minutes or more would usually resolve the issue."

Anonymous, AL (2015 Volkswagen Passat SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)
Display screen goes blank

"Sometimes we put the car in reverse and the screen that should show the backup camera just stays blank"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Volkswagen Passat TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"occasionally music from my phone plays over phone conversations that I'm having. I am completely unable to stop this music and it will continue to play as long as I am on the call."

Paul M., ON (2015 Volkswagen Passat SEL 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"If a phone is paired to the car it can take minutes for the car to connect to the phone. During this time, the radio won't play and most of the time, the backup camera won't work"

Anonymous, (2015 Volkswagen Passat SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"The nav system is very slow to start; has given us routes which put us into a repeating loop; has given us routes which repeatedly sent us in the wrong direction, especially in the Los Angeles area. (Am using an after-market Garmin when in LA)"

Dorothy G., CA (2015 Volkswagen Passat TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"The system is not smart enough to recognize alternate routes and sometimes gives erroneous directions. Not as smart as the TomTom GPS"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Volkswagen Passat SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Gps froze up. Mechanic self test indicated a failure. System replaced under warranty"

Anonymous, OK (2015 Volkswagen Passat SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"It have to be update but the cost to update very night Sometime it bring you through wrong way or not through best way"

Anonymous, ON (2015 Volkswagen Passat Unsure 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"In the middle of listening to music with my phone paired, sometimes I'd hear such a high-pitched noise all of sudden that I have to push the radio power button right away to turn off the bluetooth / audio system."

Younji W., CA (2015 Volkswagen Passat)

"About 1 in 20 times the Bluetooth does not connect. ((% It connects if I turn off the engine and restart the car. Even though have this minor problem my VW Bluetooth works 100% better than my wife's Cadillac, SRX Bluetooth"

Ed L., NY (2015 Volkswagen Passat SEL 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Radio

"On two occasions the entertainment system froze up for a period of time and we could not use it. It took a couple of hours and a few stops and restarts of the car before the radio began working again."

Max B., FL (2015 Volkswagen Passat TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"The label-cover on one of the buttons snapped off. Everything works, but it is a cosmetic problem"

William E., TX (2015 Volkswagen Passat SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Radio problem is related to the backup camera system. Most times the radio will not activate for 20 or more seconds after starting down the road. Again manufacturer says too bad, nothing they will do. It has been like this since new"

Anonymous, UT (2015 Volkswagen Passat SEL 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Speakers

"The sound from satellite radio and from bluetooth phone music is odd"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Volkswagen Passat TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Front left speaker rattles with bass tones. Needs replacement, defective since purchase of vehicle"

Anonymous, MD (2015 Volkswagen Passat TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)
Steering wheel controls

"Bluetooth does not always recognize voice commands"

Steven R., IL (2015 Volkswagen Passat SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)
Voice control commands

"Voice recognition is very unreliable and at times simply does not work"

Anonymous, TX (2015 Volkswagen Passat TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"The voice dial functionality stops working apropo of nothing and doesnt"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Volkswagen Passat SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"A/C would not blow cold air when vehicle was first started. Cycling the system ON OFF was required. Have not taken the car in for repair."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Volkswagen Passat SEL 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"was not cooling I took it to the dealer and it was replaced under warranty"

Anonymous, AZ (2015 Volkswagen Passat SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"It took 2 trips to the dealer and sending them a video to show them the control valve was not working. It took them 3 days to trying to recreate the problem. In the end it was covered under warranty."

Anonymous, WA (2015 Volkswagen Passat SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"A/C compressor failed, metal fragments contaminated entire system, A/C failed to condition air."

Robert R., AZ (2015 Volkswagen Passat SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"It would only cool the car intermittently. Multiple trips to one dealer never found the problem. One trip to another dealer immediately identified the problem which was fixed next day under warranty."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Volkswagen Passat TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Seals and/or weather-stripping

"water got into all door locks. unable to open the doors in cold weather (locks froze)."

Anonymous, NY (2015 Volkswagen Passat Wolfsburg Edition 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Squeaks or rattles

"An odd annoying squeaking noise was heard coming from the interior light control panel above the console. Repaired successfully; a broken fastener was the cause"

Max B., FL (2015 Volkswagen Passat TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Within 30 days of getting my car it developed a rattle from dash area. It took two trips to the dealership to get resolved. They put insulation around the passenger side dash speaker"

Sean H., CO (2015 Volkswagen Passat SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"OMG, the noise that comes out of the plastic piece located by the sunroof controls is unbearable. At speeds over 55 and on a country road it usually kicks in. If you apply pressure it will go away."

Max B., FL (2015 Volkswagen Passat TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"The rattle appears to be near the fire wall and I can't pinpoint it. Annoying"

Guy F., CO (2015 Volkswagen Passat TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)
Wind noise

"too much wind and road noise when driving without radio playing. true at any speed over 30 mph. Also stering wheel is not centered for the driver...it sits at an angle but I am getting used to it"

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Normal routine brake wear

Mauricio G., FL (2015 Volkswagen Passat Wolfsburg Edition 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"brakes continue to grab"

Elmer S., FL (2015 Volkswagen Passat SEL 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Premature brake wear

"This was certified pre-owned car with 40,000 mi. We put 10,000 mi on the car over 7 mos. and the brakes needed an $850 broke job with included replacement of front rotors. We thought being certified the dealership had checked for this kind of problem. 10,000 mi is not enough to wear out a set of rotors."

Anonymous, AL (2015 Volkswagen Passat Sport 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Pulsation or vibration

"If you step on the brake a bit hard, not smoothly, the whole car would vibrate or shake."

Younji W., CA (2015 Volkswagen Passat)

"Cause by uneven pad wear."

Anonymous, GA (2015 Volkswagen Passat SEL 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Rotors

"Uneven wear which effected the wear of the pads which cause the vibration when stopping at high speeds."

Anonymous, WA (2015 Volkswagen Passat Wolfsburg Edition 3.6-L V6)
Tire pressure monitor

"temperature sensitive & does not show slow leak"

Jimmy M., TX (2015 Volkswagen Passat Wolfsburg Edition 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Warning lights

"Seat occupancy sensor (at the seat belt) was shorting causing the car to think there was an unbuckled occupant in the passenger seat."

Anonymous, AL (2015 Volkswagen Passat Wolfsburg Edition 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"check engine and 4 other lights mostly on then off sometimes. VW fixed something with rt front wheel"

Anonymous, SC (2015 Volkswagen Passat SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The seatbelt light would come on when I made left turns. I thought it was about the driver's seat, because there was nothing on the passenger's seat. They tried replacing the seatbelt, etc. but none of it worked. They figure there is an electrical problem somewhere but I was told that they didn't know where to start to find it because there were no service bulletins. I have been assured that the airbags should still go off even if there is a faulty airbag warning light. Not so sure about that, but that's what I was told. This has been an issue for two years and there is no sign that it will be fixed."

Anonymous, VA (2015 Volkswagen Passat SE Unsure)

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Alignment

"Upon new car delivery - alignment was off"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Volkswagen Passat TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)
Bushings

"I had just replaced my tires and was having the emissions system replaced as part of the diesel cheating scandal. Those emission parts cost thousands of dollars and when I asked to have the new tires aligned, I was told that that was not possible because a bushing was shot-kaput. If not replaced, the new tires would soon be junk. The bushing cost would be $82 but with labor the installed cost would be over $700. Because the car was already half apart to replace the emission system I didn't have to pay the full labor cost. I feel that a bushing wearing out like that should not have failed in the neighborhood of 60,000 miles. I thought that the cost to replace and install was ridiculous, but I didn't want to ruin the approximately $1,200 set of Michelin tires I had just had installed. I felt like I was being held hostage unless I paid the high labor cost to replace the bushing."

Anonymous, MI (2015 Volkswagen Passat SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)
Steering wheel vibration

"An annoying vibration in the wheel at 65 mph and above. Balancing, alignment and new tires did nothing to help. The problem was solved with new WHEELS."

Anonymous, CO (2015 Volkswagen Passat TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)
Wheel balance

"two years and multiple attempt with roadforce balance--all to not avail. having the struts replaced, on a 4 year old car, did the trick. NOT GOOD"

Anonymous, FL (2015 Volkswagen Passat SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Other/unsure

"Takata Airbags. Replaced recently. While doing so, the dealer broke a switch in the steering wheel. Replaced switch and gave me a free oil change. Got the oil change. And then they came back and said I needed spark plugs changed at 42,000, the interior air filter needed replacing as it was filthy, and the engine air filter needed replacing. They also claimed my front tires were 2 mm smaller than the rear from wear. I had replaced both filters at 40,000 miles. 750 miles earlier and when the replaced the Takata airbags, they did the VW systems check of everything and said the filters were clean and everything else was good. I pulled up the VW guide for maintenance off the computer and found the mileage to replace spark plugs to be 60,000 miles. Quite soon. Went back to the tire dealer and they checked wear on the front tires and said they were the same as the back tires in wear. This was April and I had just taken my snow tires off the front. There was no way those tires were worn that much as they only had a couple of months of wear on them (new ones I had bought in Fall). I will not go back to this dealer for maintenance and will find another dealer for recalls (if needed). 2015 Volkswagen Passat Maintenance Schedule For USA 1.8L TSI Engine"

Anonymous, MI (2015 Volkswagen Passat SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

What Owners Say

Doors or sliding doors

"passenger door hard to open, due to a broken piston inside the door panel"

William C., MA (2015 Volkswagen Passat Wolfsburg Edition 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The bolt attaching the door to the body came loose creating a lot of noise and would have eventually caused bigger problems. Volkswagan Service -----needed to set up appointment......Local service station fixed in minutes with the right allen wrench"

Terry B., NJ (2015 Volkswagen Passat 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Windows

"Front passager side window developed a rattle and did not function correctly"

Anonymous, PA (2015 Volkswagen Passat SEL 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Oil leaks

"The recommended oil change for this model is 10,000 miles or 1 year--whichever comes first. At about 48,000 miles my oil light came on at least 4,000 miles before it hit the 10,000 mile mark. I was told I needed a new hood latch because the electrical system might be the issue. That didn't work, so they just did an oil change. Within 3,500 more miles the light was back on. Dealer did an oil consumption test. I was told I would need oil about every 3,000 miles. That's the feedback that my dealership got from VW technicians. VW technicians said that was in tolerance. That's 70% off target! How can 70% off tolderance be OK? Would that work for bridges or moon landings? I don't put many miles on my car. I am a super cautious driver. I have my car serviced regularly and use the recommended fuel grade. Mind you, I got this car after I had had a TDI Golf for about 10 months before the scandal. I got the Passat after trading in the TDI. First VW gave false data about their deisel cars, and now I have a car where they say you should need an oil change every 10,000 miles--unless you need it every 3,000 miles. I just don't think that I could purchase another car from VW and believe that anything they say about the car is likely to be true. Our Toyota Sienna has almost 200,000 miles on it and we are likely to trade in the VW first so we never have to deal with VW again. If I had wanted an unreliable German engineered car, I wish I had tracked down a Trabant. At least I'd have a piece of Cold War history to help compensate for the problems."

Anonymous, VA (2015 Volkswagen Passat SE Unsure)
Problem(s) fueling the tank

"I suddenly one day tried to fill my tank with fuel and if you put in fuel with the nozzle at more than a trickle it would activate the nozzle shutoff valve. It now took 6 to 10 minutes to fill the tank. That could be very unpleasant in the cold and blowing weather of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan during the winter months. After about a year of doing this I made an appointment with the local dealer, a 250 mile round trip from my home. I was first told that the dealership would be replacing the fuel tank and associated items. The car would be ready at the end of the afternoon. The tank would be gotten from a dealership about 40 minutes away. When I returned later in the afternoon the plan had changed. Volkswagon Corporate office had contacted the dealership and told them to replace the filler hose and associated items, not he fuel tank and associated items. The part Volkswagon Corporate had stipulated was unavailable to complete the repair that day. I had to rent a car to return home for my job the next day. After work the next day I was about 75 miles into the drive to the dealership when I decided I should call and be sure the repair would be completed. I found that when I reached the repair department that the parts had not arrived and the car would not be ready. I told the Service Department that in order to have the car serviced I was having to drive 2 trips of 250 miles plus a 150 mile trip that day to get my repair. I was not amused that they did not have the courtesy to inform me that I shouldn't make the trip that day. They arranged to pay for 2 of the three days of car rental. When I retrieved the car I was now able to fill the tank normally. It was never satisfactorily explained why I was having the problem putting fuel in the tank."
