    2022 Model Redesign Year
Volkswagen's subcompact SUV got a freshening for the 2025 model year, gaining a few extra horses and a more refined transmission. Unfortunately, capacitive-touch climate controls have replaced the knobs and buttons the Taos used to have. The 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder gets a 16-hp boost to 174 hp, and all versions get a conventional eight-speed automatic, which replaces the jerky dual-clutch transmission. Power delivery is now more responsive and predictable at low speeds. We got 26 mpg overall, which lags a few mpg behind class leaders. Nimble handling makes the Taos enjoyable to drive, and while the suspension is firm, it absorbs most bumps well.
The rear seat remains quite roomy among subcompact SUVs, and outward visibility is excellent. The second-tier SE we tested comes well-equipped with dual-zone automatic climate control and heating for the front seats and steering wheel. We’re happy to see that BSW and RCTW are now standard, instead of optional.

    2022-Present

    2022 Model Redesign Year
The Volkswagen Taos small SUV slots beneath the Tiguan. The 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, coupled with a dual-clutch automatic transmission on AWD versions delivers uneven acceleration. There is a huge delay initially, followed by a burst of power, which makes it hard to drive smoothly. Front-wheel-drive versions get a conventional transmission and drive more smoothly. Handling is nimble and the ride is firm yet civilized. Shorter than the Tiguan, the Taos still has an enormous rear seat, but cargo space is smaller.
Outward visibility is unobstructed. Upscale amenities, such as a digital instrument cluster and a panoramic roof are available. The IQ Drive suite of active safety features is not standard but available on every Taos trim, with FCW, AEB, BSW, and adaptive cruise control.
