One standard innovation, called "City Safety," helps prevent low-speed crashes by scanning the road ahead, sounding an alarm and applying the brakes if you are likely to collide with the car ahead. The T5's five-cylinder engine can sound gruff, but provides lively acceleration and respectable fuel economy. The interior is quiet, neatly finished and front-seat comfort is excellent. However, the rear seats are tight and the trunk is small.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2012 Volvo S60 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

12V power plug

"The power outlets (there are two) are used for charging my cell phone. They have repeatedly failed. Apparently a fuse keeps blowing out. I have had to take it to the dealer numerous times to fix it"

C B., MD (2012 Volvo S60 T6 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"non-functional and dealership failed to correct"

Anonymous, OR (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"fuse blew. dealership repaired free of charge"

Andrew M., NY (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"Has shorted out more than once"

John D., RI (2012 Volvo S60 T6 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)
Body control module

"The car has a gremlin. Battery light and message low battery comes on more often then not but everything checks out ok. Sometimes the side mirrors will not fold in when locking the door. Sometimes the front passenger door will not automatically unlock. Several ties the check engine light will come on, the problem is diagnosed ( usually expensive) but if not repaired, the light will go off.and not return and the car runs just fine. The car just wears me out"

Anonymous, NY (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)
Exterior lights (other than headlights)

"Exterior lightbulbs had to be replaced constantly."

Anonymous, FL (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)
Headlights

"This was not aproblem caused by the vehicle systems, but rather one where a squirrel had chewed on the insulation of one of the wiring harnesses. I think that auto manufacturers should go to greater lengths to try and protect exposed wiring from damage due to rodents. (E.G., placing wiring in protective conduits/tubiong, etc.)"

Anonymous, MD (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"The material that the headlights is made from has deteriorated at such an incredible rate that i need to have someone clear the cracking off of them. Why are companies still using plastic in lights that they know is severely damaged by UV light? Why isnt there a class action lawsuit against the makes to stop them creating dangerous lights? There has to be a material that will not haze, crack and turn yellow after 5 years of usage. Could you please investigate this and let us know why this is such a problem?"

Scott R., NY (2012 Volvo S60 T6 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"both headlights died recently at separate times, the car is only 4 years old"

Cowan D., VA (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"Left headlight filled with condensation which would not dry out. Bulb was u/s. Repaired under warranty"

Anonymous, AZ (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"at 60,000 miles the headlight seals failed and moisture got i to the lights shorting out the adaptive lighting controls. New headlights are roughly $700/each"

Anonymous, CA (2012 Volvo S60 T6 R-Design 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"Headlight seal leaked, causing moisture to get into the sealed headlight, necessitating eventual replacement, which was rather costly given that these headlights had the active bending feature. I am, however, not sure if this was a defect in the car or a slowly unfolding side effect of an impact collision with a deer on the other side of the car. In that collision the left headlight was destroyed, and there was no apparent damage to the right light, but that may have broken the seal."

Anonymous, NC (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)
Keyless entry

"Keyless entry for Two doors stopped working"

John D., RI (2012 Volvo S60 T6 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"Push to open door switches are intermittent, and very costly to fix"

Anonymous, DC (2012 Volvo S60 T6 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"The remote unit fails to operate properly at all times. It formerly would unlock the doors when it was simply on my person (in pocket). It stopped doing that"

C B., MD (2012 Volvo S60 T6 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"The keyless entry system does not work unless I press the buttons on the key fob. The dealer replaced the left front door handle, but after a week it failed again. I have given up"

Larry S., MO (2012 Volvo S60 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"Door handle sensors stopped working in multiple doors. Took 3 trips to repair shop to finally get them running consistently. We replaced three sensors"

Anonymous, OR (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"Door won't lock with push of handle. Dealer fixed no charge. The sensor was the problem"

Anonymous, MA (2012 Volvo S60 T6 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"Two out of four touch-sensitive door lock/unlock mechanisms broke"

John D., RI (2012 Volvo S60 T6 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

Anonymous, NS (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"wires in doors were no good ."

Scott L., MN (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"Have replaced keyless batteries multiple times but there is still a problem with both of them or the car electronics"

John D., RI (2012 Volvo S60 T6 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"Sensors in touch door locks don't work (two out of four)"

Anonymous, RI (2012 Volvo S60 T6 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"Only one door is operating keylessly"

Anonymous, (2012 Volvo S60 T6 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"Occasionally the keyless entry system would not unlock the passenger door and back doors. There was a recall by Volvo, and this problem was repaired at no cost to me. The problem was a minor annoyance, since after a few tries, either the doors would open or I could open them from inside the car, but I am happy that it's now gone."

Anonymous, NC (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)
Warning lights

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Ball joints

"Both front ball joints are worn out / have play at 65,000 miles and less than five years. This is not the result of damage, but just wear. Volvo considers these a wear item. They should not wear this quickly. My Hondas and Acuras have not had ball joint issues, even approaching 150,000 miles"

David B., WI (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)
Bushings

"Rear suspension bushing. Seems like they should have lasted as long as the car as I've never heard of them being replaced on any other vehicle"

Douglas B., CT (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)
Shocks or struts

"Upper strut bearings are a known weak area. I had to replace them and the ball joints two years ago at about 65,000 miles. I will be replacing the strut bearings AGAIN in a few weeks ate about 85,000 miles. These Volvo parts (actually made by Ford, I believe) are not well sealed which allows dirt and water to enter. To date, it does not appear that Volvo has made any improvements in the upper strut bearing design and is still using them on their new cars at least eight years after first being introduced. Check the auto forums, it's a well-known issue. It's not the cost of the parts that bothers me. They're only about $35 each. It's the hours of labor to take out the struts to replace the bearings. It's also the wise-ass remarks from my wife about my car vs. her former Hondas and not her Acura. Other than the front suspension reliability, I love my car."

David B., WI (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"Rear shocks can not be tuned correctly to prevent scalloping of rear tires. We've only gotten about 25,000 on rear tires before they become too bumpy for a smooth ride. Volve has replaced shocks under warranty but refuse to replace the tires"

Stephen E., MA (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"The upper pivots / bearings on both front struts are shot at 65,000 miles and fewer than five years. They lasted maybe half of what the struts should last. Volvo considers these a wear item. I have never had these parts wear out on any other car, even approaching 150,000 miles"

David B., WI (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"FRont struts needed to be replaced due to breakage of original struts"

Andrew M., NY (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"Failed at about 30,000 miles"

"Part of the dynamic suspension, Brocken shock solenoid wire caused by vibrations"

Anonymous, QC (2012 Volvo S60 T6 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"Rear shock design is awesome, easy to replace. The front design is not. Very difficult to remove, requires too much force to disengage the old struts."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)
Steering wheel vibration

"If I hit a bump, it was like I had no control over the car. There was a constant rattling in the rear. I think the crux of the problem is the numerous potholes that we have in the city."

Anonymous, MD (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)
Tire wear is uneven

"I was told that the uneven tire wear was caused by the improperly designed / toned shocks"

Stephen E., MA (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"Caused by shock failure"

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

"Exhaust value disintegrated at 68k miles. Full valve job needed. Car Consumes oil since 45,000 miles at abnormally high rate. Car pings due to oil consumption. All 5 fuel injectors failed at 90k miles"

"Adding about 1 qt of oil every 2 thousand miles."

Anonymous, MA (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"I don't really know/remember the specifics of the engine problem. As I recall, the "rings" had to be replaced, which I believe is a cylinder head issue."

Anonymous, WA (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"Car started to use a great deal of oil, but there were no apparent leaks. Upon examination, the dealer said the cylinder rings had to be replaced. Dealer did so. Though car was out of warranty, I was only charged $100 for the work."

Anonymous, OH (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)
Engine rebuild or replacement

Scott L., MN (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"Needed piston rings, and apparently this is a known problem. Found out when the oil light came on entering the tunnel by Logan airport. Local service guy noted high oil use on a prior visit, so they were able to cover it as warranted. If he hadn’t made that note, the rebuild would have been on my nickel."

Douglas B., CT (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"Faulty piston rings. Work completed under warranty."

Anonymous, (2012 Volvo S60 T6 R-Design 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

Routine software updates

"The GPS is quite the worst such system I have ever experienced in any vehicle I have driven. It has multiple in-depth screens that are INCONVENIENT and impossible to adjust quickly. After a 6+ hour idle session (1/2 tank gas consumed) to update the maps, the system could not find the local dealership - but delivered me to a back street cul-de-sac some 5 1/2 miles from the correct destination. It continually chooses absurd routes to a frequently visited destination - choosing a 23 mile motorway route with about a mile of street roads over a 12 mile highway (same highway, opposite direction) with about two miles of street roads. No learning or direct route programming can overcome this mad choice. Reversion to the worst is the norm."

"My dealer recommended I change to synthetic oil, my engine used/leaked all the oil which caused my engine to seize. Volvo paid for my engine replacement."

Anonymous, WA (2012 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"I bought this car in Fall 2014 certified pre-owned from Volvo with about 39,000 miles on it. It now has over 124,000 miles, but fast oil burnoff has been a persistent problem for the last 30,000+ miles. Since the 91,000 mile mark, I've had this problem. The full oil contents usually burn off within 3000-4000 miles and I've had to be very vigilant about refilling the oil frequently in order to avoid a catastrophic engine failure. I've been told (repeatedly) by my mechanic who is expert at Volvos that it would not be cost-effective to repair, but rather to refill frequently until I'm ready to replace the car. According to the mechanic, the oil seems to leak out the exhaust and is not properly processed by the engine. What is worse is that there is no oil gauge (except an oil "light") that goes off when you bottom out, so I now check the oil stick under the hood after every other gas fill-up, and refill the oil as warranted - usually at least 1-2 quarts each time - to avoid significant oil burnoff."
