One standard innovation, called "City Safety," helps prevent low-speed crashes by scanning the road ahead, sounding an alarm and applying the brakes if you are likely to collide with the car ahead. The T5's five-cylinder engine can sound gruff, but provides lively acceleration and respectable fuel economy. The interior is quiet, neatly finished and front-seat comfort is excellent. However, the rear seats are tight and the trunk is small.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2013 Volvo S60 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"The design of the system is terrible. When you put the car in reverse it will still be up for an obstacle that is in front of you which means it every time you park in your garage beeps from the wall in front of you when you back up or when you park in the parking lot you get beeps from the parking sign in front of you. It makes you not believe that there is an actual obstacle there. I wish there was a way to turn off the sounds and just leave the display"

Anonymous, CO (2013 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"the camera screen became grainy"

Anonymous, IL (2013 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"Stops working when warmer temps of Spring arrived. It either does not work at all or image is distorted. Worked Ok all winter"

Anonymous, MA (2013 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"Backup camera began tilting downward within 9 months of owning the car. Took it in for service, they tried adjusting and the issue happened again. Took it in for service and they reset it, which helped, but the angle still isn't correct"

Anonymous, MO (2013 Volvo S60 T6 R-Design 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
CD player

"Commercial CDs kept sticking in the unit - I replaced it for almost $1000 and they still stuck. Volvo refunded my money, but I still can't play certain CDs with a different coating, that are NOT home recorded, but commercially purchased."

Anonymous, CA (2013 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)
Display screen goes blank

"display screen flashed on and off, sound had lots of static, then the sound system quit working at all"

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)
Radio

"The radio will just stop working for awhile, then start working again. Maybe once every week or two. This has been going on for years but it always starts working again so it doesnt make sense to take it in since it works most of the time."

Anonymous, MI (2013 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)
Speakers

"There is some very annoying resonance in the front left speaker. The sound is intermittent. I have taken it to the dealer twice and they are unable to reproduce or fix"

Anonymous, CO (2013 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"The keyless entry for the drivers door stopped working several years ago around 2017. The Volvo dealership fixed it. Then ab 12 months later the drivers side rear door keyless entry stopped working consistently. I got an estimate on fixing both doors but it was too expensive. Instead I use the keyless entry on the passenger side and unlock doors using the control on the door."

Anonymous, NC (2013 Volvo S60 T5 Unsure)

"Key/remote very spotty - sometime works, sometime doesn't; range is terrible- and the button by trunk latch has never worked properly"

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"This typically occurred at stoplights. When lifting my foot from the brake then pressing on the gas the transmission would often lurch into drive causing a small whiplash type movement that was annoying to myself and passengers wondering why I could not drive more smoothly. This occurred for several thousand miles (70-90k) at intermittent intervals and the Volvo dealer was unable to duplicate it. It seems to have resolved by itself."

Matt A., CO (2013 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"transmission needed to be reset so it could recalibrate"

Wilbur S., CO (2013 Volvo S60 T6 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"Transmission software had to be reloaded"

Anonymous, TX (2013 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

What Owners Say

Oil leaks

"A small leak developed from a vacuum pump seal. The Volvo dealer attempted to fix this but in the next days the leak was significantly worse. I took it back and the re-accomplished the repair and fixed it."

Matt A., CO (2013 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"My engine routinely overheats in the summer and I have to add about a quart of oil each week when it is hot. In the winter I add a quart of oil every 3-4 weeks. There are no visible oil leaks and I've been advised it likely requires an engine rebuild. I plan to drive it until it reaches 180,000+ miles or until the engines dies."

Anonymous, MI (2013 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"Engine started using excess oil at about 65000 miles"

Anonymous, WA (2013 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"This car has consumed oil since it was brand new. The dealer solution to have them check the oil every 1000 miles. The low oil indicator only comes one when there is almost no oil in the reservior. I check the oil about every 1000 miles or before a longer trip. I also always have a quart of oil in the trunk and I now add a quart of oil every 2 to 3 thousand miles."

Anonymous, WA (2013 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

"Oil leaks comes closest, but the oil is not actually leaking. Rather, it seems to be a major issue with oil consumption. Recommended oil change for full synthetic oil is 10,000 miles. Within the last 20,000 miles, and two oil changes (at the dealer), I have not been able to go more than 3000 miles without adding oil"

Corrine M., PA (2013 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

4WD/AWD components

"AWD disabled light came on. Took it to the Volvo dealership to have a diagnostic/cost analysis done. Was told it need new AWD computer unit and it would cost $2500.00 to repair. A week or so after leaving the dealership, I had my car at the car wash to pressure wash it .. after leaving the car wash, I notice the AWD disabled light went out and hasn't turned on since. So, I feel that the problem may have only been a dirty sensor light causing the AWD disabled light to come on."

Anonymous, PA (2013 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)
Driveline vibration

"It would vibrate when under a load but not yet downshifting. Driveline vibration fixed by a software update"

Anonymous, PA (2013 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

"This car has more rattles, squeaks and wind noise than previous models I have owned. Excessive noise over rough roads, wind noise through front windows and moonroof, spare tire cover does not latch down which causes a lot of trunk noise, etc"

Chad S., OK (2013 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)
Wind noise

"The car made this weird buzzing noise between 40-55 miles an hour. We took it to the dealer. They didn't hear it but put more insulation in the door"

Susan M., FL (2013 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

Anonymous, CA (2013 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)
Normal routine brake wear

"The rear brakes had to be replaced. I felt it was too soon given the age of the car. The dealer says, although unusual, this was normal wear and tear"

Andy R., WA (2013 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)
Rotors

"I've had to replace the rotors and the brakes twice"

Joe D., PA (2013 Volvo S60 T5 2.5-L 5 Cyl turbo)
Squeaking

"This is my second Volvo and it is making a lot of noise that wasn't there in my first S60 with the same amount of mileage -- squeaks, bumps, vibrations. I just had major work to the struts, shocks and axles and the vibrations continue. I didn't have this problem with my former Volvo S60.
