Lotus Elise and Exige recalled for leaky oil systems

Consumer Reports News: October 28, 2011 01:38 PM

Lotus Cars USA is recalling more than 5,000 Elise and Exige sports cars, says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Faulty oil cooling systems in the 2005 and 2006 model years of those cars may leak oil.

The NHTSA says the oil cooling line could become detached and inadvertently spray motor oil on the cars' tire, which could lead to a crash. If the oil leak occurs in the engine compartment, a fire could result.

Lotus plans to notify affected owners to bring their Elise and Exige cars in to dealers, who will make the necessary repairs free of charge.

For more information, consumers can call Lotus toll-free (800-245-6887) or visit the NHTSA's website: www.SaferCar.gov.

    Recall: 2005-2006 Lotus Elite / Exige - Oil Campaign ID#: 11V510000 [NHTSA]
