Most and Least Reliable Dishwasher Brands

CR's member survey shows that paying more for a dishwasher doesn't guarantee you'll get a more reliable machine

Consumer Reports members expect a dishwasher to last 10 years, according to our recent survey. That expectation lines up with what a number of manufacturers say—that their dishwashers are built to last roughly a decade.

But our latest survey, in which we asked members about their experiences with more than 70,000 dishwashers, also shows that not all models make it to that 10-year mark.

"Around a quarter of all newly purchased dishwashers are likely to break within the first five years," says Simon Slater, manager of survey research at Consumer Reports. Choosing a reliable brand may help you get that average life span.

MORE ON DISHWASHERS

To calculate predicted reliability, we survey our members about the products they own and use that data to make projections about how new models from a given brand will hold up over time. We also ask members how likely they are to recommend their dishwasher, and that question serves as the basis for our owner satisfaction rating.

These latest findings come from the Consumer Reports 2018 Summer Survey, which leverages data on 72,307 dishwashers purchased between 2008 and 2018, used a median of three times per week. (We don't include dishwashers covered under a service contract.)

There are 20 brands in our survey, including ones you may know well, such as Bosch, Electrolux, Frigidaire, GE, Ikea, Kenmore, LG, Maytag, Samsung, Whirlpool, and more. Higher-end brands, with dishwashers starting around $900, are represented, too. Find out how reliable these brands are—we're talking Miele, Jenn-Air, KitchenAid, Thermador, and Viking—before you swipe your credit card.

And to help make choosing a dishwasher easier, we incorporate lab test results, predicted brand reliability, and owner satisfaction into one Overall Score for every model in our dishwasher ratings.

Most Reliable Dishwasher Brands

Bosch, Miele, Thermador, and Whirlpool stand out as the most reliable dishwasher brands in our latest member survey, garnering an Excellent rating for predicted reliability. That means that of the 20 brands in our survey, new dishwashers from Bosch, Miele, Thermador, and Whirlpool are the least likely to develop problems or break within the first five years.

Note that models from these brands range in price from around $500 to $2,300. The Bosch and Whirlpool models below are on the low end of that spectrum.

Having a dishwasher that lasts a decade or more isn’t much solace if you don’t like it—so our survey asks CR members about their satisfaction level as well. Our owner satisfaction rating reflects the proportion of CR members who are extremely likely to recommend the dishwasher they bought.

Bosch, Miele, and Thermador earn an Excellent rating on this measure, whereas Whirlpool owners were only lukewarm: Whirlpool snags a Good rating for owner satisfaction, which is middle of the pack.
