    Detailed Test Results

PHOTO QUALITY. This 16-megapixel advanced point-and-shoot camera captured images with good quality. Pictures were sharp, which means you can see most details and subtle patterns in the image. In low-light situations without a flash, pictures were not quite as sharp as those of most recommended models. We judged this model very good for outdoor performance, such as shooting landscapes in the daytime; good for indoor performance, such as photographing a well-lit basketball game in a gym; good for performance under natural light without a flash, such as shooting under an overcast sky; and good for low-light performance without a flash, such as capturing a birthday party. Photos taken in our low-light performance tests displayed little image noise; subjects retained most of their correct detail and color.

FLASH. The X-E (Type 102) captured flash shots that were very good. In our distance test, we found the camera's flash could illuminate most subjects that are closer to the camera, but had some problems with distant subjects. The flash also has very good, even coverage.

LENS. The lens has a fixed focal length; it has no zoom capability.

IMAGE STABILIZER. In low-light settings, its performance was fair and often produced blurry photos.

SPEED. In terms of performance, the Leica X-E (Type 102) powers up in a moderate amount of time.

    VIDEO. It cannot capture video.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS. Unlike most advanced point-and-shoots, this camera does not include a viewfinder, which means you'll need to rely on the LCD to compose your photo or video. It has a small 2.6-inch touchscreen LCD, which has very good quality that lets you easily compose your shots and has fine playback of photos and video. Like all cameras of this kind, it can capture RAW files, which gives you the most flexibility when manipulating image files with software, and has a hot shoe for attaching an external flash (generally sold separately).

    About

The X-E (Type 102) is a 16-megapixel camera with no optical zoom and a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 36mm (fixed). It has a 2.6-inch LCD (230,000 pixels) and includes touchscreen capability. Because it does not accept interchangeable lenses, we consider this model an advanced point-and-shoot camera. The camera has a maximum aperture of f/2.8. The camera's shutter speed range is 30 seconds to 1/2000 of a second. The X-E (Type 102) stores photos on SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards and has 110MB of on-board storage. It captures images as JPEG or RAW files at a top resolution of 4928 x 3264. This advanced point-and-shoot has 11 autofocus points, 4 exposure modes, and an exposure compensation control that can be set at +/-3 EV. It has exposure bracketing, which allows you to take multiple exposures of a single scene. The image stabilization system for this camera is electronic. The X-E (Type 102) measures 5.2 inches wide by 2.7 inches high by 2 inches deep, and weighs 14 ounces (with battery, memory card, and strap).
