PHOTO QUALITY. This 16-megapixel superzoom camera captured images with very good quality. We judged this model very good for outdoor performance, such as shooting landscapes in the daytime; very good for indoor performance, such as photographing a well-lit basketball game in a gym; FLASH. The Coolpix L840 captured flash shots that were very good. In our distance test, we found the camera's flash could illuminate subjects very well, both near and far. The flash also has good, relatively even coverage.LENS. It has a very long 38x zoom lens that can be great for travel and sports shooting when you need to zoom in far to capture your subjects. The lens also has very wide-angle (22.5mm) capability that's very useful for landscapes and group portraits, although you may notice a bit of distortion when you're shooting faces up close, for instance.IMAGE STABILIZATION. This is an important feature with a long zoom lens; taking hand-held shots at the telephoto end of the zoom range can generally blur or soften images due to the slight movement of your hands. Shooting zoom set at 4x in well-lit scenes, this model did a good job of minimizing the effects of camera shake. Shooting telephoto in well-lit scenes, this model did an excellent job of minimizing the effects of camera shake. In low-light settings, it performed well but sometimes produced blurry photos. Overall, the shake reduction results from our tests were good.SPEED. In terms of performance, the Nikon Coolpix L840 powers up very quickly. It has a short interval between shots, which can be important when shooting fast-moving or unpredictable subjects.VIDEO. The Nikon Coolpix L840 takes good video. It captures full HD video at 1920 x 1080. As for sound, it captures good audio in stereo.ADDITIONAL COMMENTS. Like most point-and-shoot models, this camera does not include a viewfinder, which means you'll need to rely on the LCD to compose your photo or video. This superzoom is much heavier than most in its class.

The Coolpix L840 is a 16-megapixel camera with 38x optical zoom and a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 22.5mm-855mm. It has a 3-inch LCD (921,000 pixels). Because of its long zoom lens, we consider this model a superzoom camera. The Coolpix L840 stores photos and video on SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards and has 20MB of on-board storage. It captures images as JPEG files at a top resolution of 4608 x 3456 and full HD-resolution video as MOV files at a top resolution of 1920 x 1080. Like most digital cameras, this model comes with a proprietary rechargeable battery. The image stabilization system for this camera is optical and electronic. The Coolpix L840 measures 4.5 inches wide by 3.1 inches high by 3.8 inches deep, and weighs 21 ounces (1.3 pounds) (with battery, memory card, and strap).
