Smartphones have been getting sturdier for years, thanks to steady improvements in the materials and designs. In fact, 61 of the 70 phones in CR’s current ratings earn a top or near-top durability score, which means each has survived dozens of drops in our lab’s unforgiving tumbler, designed to simulate waist-high falls from countless angles.

That’s good news for Samsung phone owners. When we put the latest S-Series models to the test, the S26, S26+, and S26 Ultra all survived 100 drops in the tumbler without breaking and with minimal damage to their frames. “You’d think a heavier phone like the S26 Ultra would be more vulnerable, but it also aces this test,” says Henry Parra, the head of CR’s smartphone testing. Each model also earned top scores for scratch resistance.

At the same time, these phones aren’t cheap. The S26 starts at $800, and, at $1,100, the S26 Ultra costs as much as a high-performing laptop. One unfortunate drop can saddle you with hundreds of dollars in repairs.

Even a superficial scratch can reduce your phone’s trade-in value. For example, a Samsung Galaxy S25 in pristine condition fetches nearly $300 on the resale platform Back Market, whereas the same phone with significant scarring will get you only about $40.

That’s why our experts still recommend tucking your Samsung Galaxy phone into a case. To help you find a favorite, we tried out the options below, evaluating each for fit, feel, style, cost, and useful features, such as wireless charging. Here are our top picks. (All were tested on the S26, but you can choose the one specific to the S26+ or S26 Ultra.)

The Right Fit and Raised Edges

If a phone case checks these two boxes, you can generally count on it to do its most important job, Parra says, protecting your phone from common mishaps.

  1. It needs to fit your specific model precisely, with a snug seal around the frame and fragile components, such as the camera, side buttons, and charging port.
  2. It needs a raised edge around the front display and the rear camera to protect them from direct impact. If you want a little more shock absorption, look for bulkier corners made of rubber or protective design elements such as a built-in “air gap.”

OtterBox Commuter

OtterBox Commuter

The Otterbox Commuter is slim enough to easily slip into a pocket or bag and isn’t too cumbersome to hold. The case has a two-layer design: a bendy interior layer and a rigid plastic exterior that you place on the phone separately. The case can withstand dozens of drops from around waist-height, according to the manufacturer. It also features a flap that covers the charging port to help keep dust and other debris out, though safely cleaning your device may be sufficient. The OtterBox Commuter is also compatible with magnetic wireless charging, which means you can add other magnetic accessories, too. It comes in a handful of colors, including an earthy sagebrush green that I like. It fits the Samsung Galaxy phone well, though it takes a little finessing to get it in place due to the two-piece design.

The Feel: Smooth or Grippy?

This largely comes down to personal preference. Cases made of smooth plastic can be easier to clean, though they may be more slippery in your hand, too. Cases with a textured material can be easier to hold and potentially provide a greater cushion during a fall. But some of that stick can collect grime.

Onn Magnetic Compatible Dual-Layer Phone Case

Onn Magnetic Compatible Dual-Layer Phone Case

The Onn Magnetic Compatible Dual-Layer phone case, available solely at Walmart, stands out for several reasons. For one, it’s a budget-friendly pick. The back and sides are textured for easy gripping. The model is notably slim and lightweight, with a snug fit. And, importantly, the raised edges extend farther beyond the front display and rear camera than those on a number of other cases we evaluated, providing the phone with ample protection should it fall face down. The case offers wireless magnetic charging, too. The one downside: It’s available only in black or clear.

FNTCASE Samsung Galaxy S26 Case

FNTCASE Samsung Galaxy S26 Case

If you want something minimalist and sleek, this low-cost FNTCASE is lightweight, easy to put on, and features raised 1.5mm edges that protect the front display. Better yet, the clear frame allows your Galaxy phone’s color to peek through. But the camera guard doesn’t fully encircle the rear camera area, which isn’t ideal. This case allows for magnetic wireless charging.

The Size: Bulky or Lightweight?

Heavy-duty cases were definitely helpful when smartphones were more susceptible to damage from a single drop. Now that phones are sturdier, you don’t need to turn an impressively slim device into a brick with a “military-grade” case. Options like that often boast drop protection from heights phones rarely reach, as in 10 or 12 feet in the air. (The tumbler in CR’s labs is designed to simulate drops from waist-level for good reason.) But this depends, of course, on what you enjoy doing and where you work.

“Maybe you’re outdoorsy and take your phone hiking,” Parra says, “or you work in construction and are often climbing up ladders. For some people, it makes sense to go for a heavy-duty option.” But if your phone goes to the usual places—the couch, your car, the store while you run errands—then feel free to go slimmer.

OtterBox Defender Series Pro

OtterBox Defender Series Pro

The Otterbox Defender is one of the sturdiest options from a brand known for ruggedness—and it certainly feels that way when you hold the case in your hand. It’s heavier and bulkier than most others we tried. It has a stiff plastic layer that hugs the device and another bendable, shock-absorbing outer layer. The case can provide protection through dozens of drops, according to the manufacturer, and the rubberlike exterior offers plenty of grip. A flap over the charging port helps keep out dust and debris. The Defender Series Pro features anchors for accessories like straps and charms, and it’s compatible with magnetic wireless charging. The few trade-offs: It only comes in black and navy blue, and, because of the tight-fitting dual layers, it’s a struggle to put on and take off.

Spigen Ultra Hybrid MagFit

Spigen Ultra Hybrid MagFit

The Spigen Ultra Hybrid MagFit checks the right boxes. It’s simple, slim, and available at a great price. It fits the phone well and offers moderately raised edges for improved screen and rear camera protection. The case is sleek, so there’s not much additional grip, but the bendable material makes it a cinch to take on and off. It’s mostly clear, though you can opt for one with a colorful trim. And the case supports wireless magnetic charging and other magnetic accessories.

Wireless Charging? Check

The S26, S26+, and S26 Ultra offer wireless magnetic charging, so you’ll very likely want to find a case that does, too. Fortunately, that’s not hard. Nearly all the options we evaluated support this feature and can accommodate other magnetic accessories, like pop-out phone rings for easier grip or magnetic phone stands in your car.

ESR Samsung Galaxy S26 Phone Case

ESR Samsung Galaxy S26 Phone Case

No need to pay more for wireless charging capability. This sleek ESR case looks great on the Galaxy S26, and the magnetic wireless charging works well. The case offers 11 feet of drop protection, according to the manufacturer, and protective raised edges around both the front display and rear camera. It’s designed with additional shock-absorbing material on the corners, too. This case comes in a handful of colors, including the clear with black trim option featured here and a fun frosted blue.

Colorful and Customizable

A quick scroll through all the “S26 cases” on Amazon tells you that much of what differentiates the thousands of available options is aesthetics—and that’s also what makes shopping for one such fun. Maybe you’re partial to a zany pattern. Maybe you’d rather have a more neutral choice or something clear to show off your actual Galaxy phone. On this front, you’ve got plenty of choices.

Casetify Compact Magnetic Case

Casetify Compact Magnetic Case

If you want something with a little personality, Casetify offers dozens of cases in charming colors and designs, from fruits and florals to paw prints and retro patterns. (I particularly like this watercolor floral by the artist Marta Olga Klara.) The images printed on the case are just as clear and colorful as those shown online. And Casetify covers the essentials. You get a case with a snug fit, a protective raised edge, shock-absorbing sides, and wireless charging compatibility. This one—the Compact Magnetic—is made of smooth plastic, so it doesn’t have as much grip in hand as other picks.

Other Handy Features

Want your case to do double duty? Consider other features, such as a kickstand, a wallet for your credit cards and ID, a built-in portable charger for on-the-go juice, or even those anchors to dangle charms and other accessories.

Torras Ostand Q3 Spin

Torras Ostand Q3 Spin

The reasonably priced Torras Ostand Q3 Spin has a premium feel without adding lots of extra bulk. The design features a raised edge around the front display and rear camera, as well as air pockets around the side for cushioning. The case has another fun feature, too—a handy built-in kickstand for, say, easier viewing while watching a show or recording a steady video with the selfie cam. Other kickstand cases we evaluated felt flimsy or worked only for horizontal viewing, whereas this Torras pick can be locked in either orientation. The Q3 Spin comes in clear, purple, and black, and it’s compatible with magnetic wireless charging and other magnetic accessories.

What About Screen Protectors?

In addition to getting better at surviving falls, today’s smartphones are more scratchproof, too. In fact, the entire Samsung Galaxy S26 line earns strong scores in CR’s scratch-resistance testing, which uses different hardness scales (talc to diamond) to measure the pressure required to leave a mark on the display and camera. That means a screen protector isn’t essential.

But it can buy you a little peace of mind, especially if you’re burdened with butter fingers. "Imagine dropping your phone face down onto a rock or another jagged surface, rather than a flat floor where the raised edges protect it,” Parra says.

A screen protector can also be useful if you want to get the highest trade-in value later on.

Extended Warranty, Too?

Once you’ve got a great case for your Galaxy phone, an extra layer of protection might make sense—particularly if you, say, travel frequently, regularly hand your phone to little ones, or spend significant time in high-risk environments, like rock climbing or on construction sites.

Samsung Care+, the company’s extended warranty program, can save you significantly on common repairs. For the Samsung Galaxy S26, for example, a screen replacement that regularly costs $209 is just $29 with the added coverage. The higher-tier “theft and loss” plan covers screen replacements at no cost and allows three device replacements every 12 months.

But you really do need to do the math. According to a 2022 survey of CR members, only 20 percent of extended warranty programs, service contracts, and insurance plans for smartphones ever get used. So ultimately it comes down to how likely you are to be one of the unlucky souls—the 1 in 5 plan members who may actually need to use the coverage.

The monthly cost for a plan depends on which model you own. A basic Samsung Care+ plan costs $5 per month for the S26 and S26+ (256GB) and $10 per month for the S26 Ultra.

For more help in deciding whether the added cost is worth the extra peace of mind, check out our Samsung Care+ guide, which breaks down the different plan options and parameters.
