Sound quality:We found the S51 delivers sound quality that falls in the very good range - it reproduces music and voice very well although it does have some noticeable sonic quirks. The
bass (as in bass drums, bass guitars, stand-up bass, etc.) has good impact, doesn't go deep and is a touch boomy. The
midrange (voices, guitars, horns, etc.) is somewhat grainy, a bit hazy and congested (think sonic traffic jam) and a touch sibilant. The
treble (cymbals, the upper range of violins, etc.) is extended but is somewhat smeared and a bit prominent and sizzly (sounds that should have a delicate shimmer have a sound reminiscent of bacon frying). It has an open sound, but that's because it's not covering your ears, not because the audio sounds open and does a decent job of recovering room ambience in the upper midrange and so-so everywhere else. Decent dynamics depending on fit. Mixed character; neutral bass and midrange, coolish treble. The overall sound can be summarized as somewhat grainy, a bit bright, and a touch boomy. The tone settings of the app do have a noticeable effect on the sound of these earphones.
