Detailed Test Results

Design and features:
This model has customizable touch controls with play/pause/next/previous and call connect/disconnect default settings. Either earpiece can be used alone for one ear monitoring of Bluetooth streamed audio and telephone communications but will only monitor one channel for stereo sources (left earphone monitors left channel only, right earphone monitors right channel only). It supports unspecified digital voice assistants when used with Bluetooth devices that have those capabilities and that, if needed, have the appropriate apps installed. The charging/carrying case has built-in rechargeable battery that the manufacturer claims can be used to recharge the earphone batteries for an additional 21 hrs. of playtime for a total of 28 hrs. The free Shokz app download for iOS and Android mobile devices adds additional features and software updates.

Sound quality:
We found the OpenFit delivers sound quality that falls in the very good range - it reproduces music and voice very well although it does have some noticeable sonic quirks. The overall sound can be summarized as a touch bassy and somewhat grainy. With the Shokz app Equalizer set to Standard (the as received state of the earphone) the bass (as in bass drums, bass guitars, stand-up bass, etc.) has good impact and goes deep, but is a touch prominent and boomy, and can sound a touch "warbly" with some program material. The midrange (voices, guitars, horns, etc.) is somewhat grainy, a bit hazy and congested (think sonic traffic jam), a touch telephone-like and sibilant, and the upper midrange is a bit prominent. The treble (cymbals, the upper range of violins, etc.) is extended but is somewhat smeared and a touch sizzly (sounds that should have a delicate shimmer have a sound reminiscent of bacon frying). The sound also has a good sense of liveliness and is open--sound-wise it seems like you don't have anything plugging up your ears. This earphone does a decent job of recovering room ambience in the upper midrange, but ambience recovery is so-so elsewhere. The tone settings of the app do have a noticeable effect on the sound of these earphones.

Comfort and Fit:

These earphones only produce a sense of very light pressure in the ear bowl area.

Small/Medium/Large

Users with small, medium, and large sized ears may find that the ear hooks are not particularly noticeable, and that this model stays in place with no problems for casual use.

Large

Users with larger sized ears may find that they are stable during fairly vigorous head movement while users with small and medium sized ear users may find that they are also stable during vigorous head movement.

Incidental contact with the touch controls can cause unintentional playing and pausing.
