Design and features:The ATH-Sport 50BT has an integrated microphone and volume, music player, and call connect/disconnect controls for use with paired Bluetooth devices. This model is claimed by the manufacturer to be water resistant and comes with four pairs of isolating ear pieces in various sizes, three pair of non-isolating ear pieces in various sizes, a USB charging cable, and a carrying bag.
Sound quality: When the isolating ear pieces are used we found the ATH-Sport 50BT delivers sound quality that falls in the Good range - it reproduces music and voice reasonably well despite the obvious shortcomings in its sound. The overall sound can be summarized as sizzly and boomy. Bass (as in bass drums, bass guitars, stand-up bass, etc.) goes deep, but is prominent and boomy and sometimes has excessive impact. The midrange (voices, guitars, horns, etc.) is fairly even, but is grainy and slightly hazy. The treble (cymbals, the upper range of violins, etc.) is extended, but is prominent, sizzly (sounds that should have a delicate shimmer have a sound reminiscent of bacon frying), and can be overbearing with some program material. The sound has a good sense of liveliness and is somewhat open (sound-wise it almost seems like you don't have anything plugging up your ears). When the non-isolating ear pieces are used the sound quality drops into the Fair range - the bass becomes subdued, lacks impact and does not go deep, the midrange becomes thin and harsh, and the overall sound is tinny.
Comfort: As typical of in-ear models they produce a sense of pressure in the ear canal opening that might be uncomfortable for some. Users with larger ear canals might not get a good seal or a secure fit from the ear pieces. The fit is secure enough for casual use; while the adjustable ear hooks increase the sense of stability and the earphones feel fairly secure during vigorous head movement they do not as secure as some other sport earphone designs. The sound of the earphone connecting cable rubbing on clothing may be transmitted by the earphones.
