Design and features: The WF-SP700N works with or without the noise cancelling feature being turned on, and you can use the noise-canceling feature without listening to music. The earphones have an integrated microphone and music player and call connect/disconnect controls for paired Bluetooth devices. Additional features include NFC Bluetooth pairing and support for Apple Siri and Google Assistant digital voice assistants when it is used with Bluetooth devices that have those capabilities. This model is claimed by the manufacturer to be water resistant and comes with four pairs of ear pieces in various types and sizes, two pairs of removable ear bowl supports, a USB charging cable, and a charging cradle/carrying case with built-in battery that the manufacturer claims can be used to recharge the earphone batteries up to two times between its own charges. The free Sony Headphones Connect app download for Apple and Android mobile devices adds an additional ambient sound monitoring mode, can act as a audio program player, and can provide tonal balance equalization.
Sound quality: We found the WF-SP700N provides Very Good active noise reduction, and regardless of whether the noise cancelling feature was turned on or off, it delivers sound quality that falls in the Very Good range - it reproduces music and voice very well although it does have some noticeable sonic quirks. The overall sound can best be summarized as a touch soft and, depending on how they are positioned in the ear, somewhat boomy to boomy. Regardless of positioning the sound has a good sense of liveliness. The midrange (voices, guitars, horns, etc.) is fairly even, but slightly hazy and grainy. The treble (cymbals, the upper range of violins, etc.) is slightly smeared (sounds that should have a delicate shimmer sound blurred) and the upper treble is muted. The bass (as in bass drums, bass guitars, stand-up bass, etc.) has good impact and goes deep. But depending on how it sits in your ear the bass can sound somewhat boomy and slightly prominent and the overall sound is somewhat open (almost seems like you don't have anything plugging up your ears), or the bass is boomy and prominent and the overall sound is somewhat closed (somewhat obvious that you have something plugging your ears). These earphones provide Very Good noise reduction that is fairly even across most of the frequency range with low frequencies reduced the most. When the noise cancelling feature is turned on an extremely faint hiss can be heard when there is no audio program to drown it out.
Comfort: As typical of in-ear models they produce a sense of pressure in the ear canal opening might be uncomfortable for some. They stay in place with no problems, and the ear bowl support earpieces make the fit very stable even during vigorous head movements, but some users found that the sound of the earphones varied depending on how they were positioned in the ears.
