Design and features:

These earphones have medium-high sensitivity so they can provide satisfying volume levels when used with home audio equipment and even lower-powered portable audio devices. The Sumpan has an integrated microphone and music player function controls that are compatible with iPads, some iPods, and some iPhones and some other cellphones. The call connect/disconnect button can be used with some iPhones and some other cellphones. These earphones may not operate properly with some non-Apple/non-Android mobile devices or other audio equipment. This model has earphones hook together so they can be hung around the neck when not in use, and comes with two pairs of ear insert earbud covers.

Sound quality:

We found the Sumpan delivers sound quality that falls in the good range - it reproduces music and voice reasonably well despite the obvious shortcomings in its sound. The overall sound can best be summarized as slightly muffled and somewhat bassy. Bass (as in bass drums, bass guitars, stand-up bass, etc.) has decent impact, but is somewhat prominent and boomy and the deepest bass is lacking. The midrange (voices, guitars, horns, etc.) is fairly even but a bit hazy, congested (think sonic traffic jam), and grainy. The treble (cymbals, the upper range of violins, etc.) is somewhat extended but somewhat subdued. The sound is closed-in (sound-wise it is somewhat obvious that you have something blocking your ears) and lacks a bit of liveliness.

Comfort and Fit:
This model is a hybrid ear insert/ear bud design - the earpieces are supported by ear bowls like a ear bud model and they insert slightly into the ear canals but don't seal them like a typical ear insert model. We found that they stay in in the earbowl with no problem, but depending on the earbowl size and shape some users might find that it is difficult to position them for the best sound quality.

The UrbanEars Sumpan portable earphones have a non-isolating earbud design. These iPod/cellphone-centric earphones have a 48-inch audio cord with a modified stereo 4 contact mini-plug that works with iPods, iPads, iPhones, and some cellphones, but may not be compatible with other audio devices. They have an inline microphone and inline remote with a music player function and call connect/disconnect control. Additional features include earphones that hook together so they can be hung around the neck when not in use. The Sumpan comes with two pairs of ear insert earbud covers and is covered by a 12-month warranty.
