Just a few weeks before the holiday shopping season kicks into gear, HP and Microsoft have introduced new laptops that could wind up on more than a few wish lists.

The HP Spectre Folio and Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 and Surface Pro 6 are targeting consumers seeking a premium computing experience.

The new HP laptop is a 2-in-1 convertible, which means the keyboard folds back so that the screen can be used as a tablet. It’s unlike anything else in the HP line—it’s wrapped in leather and is characterized by the company as a “reinvention” of the PC.

“The Spectre Folio looks great, and they didn’t slouch on the internal components, either,” says Patrick Moorhead, founder, president, and principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, a market research firm. “I don’t think you’re going to be editing 4K videos on it, but it has more than enough performance for things like Word and PowerPoint.”

The Microsoft Surface devices, by contrast, focus on internal updates to the company’s existing Surface products to bring them in line with 2018 flagships from other brands. The Surface Laptop 2 is a traditional notebook, and the Surface Pro 6 is a 2-in-1 detachable, which means the screen can be disconnected from the keyboard and used as a tablet.

    More on Laptops

Microsoft also introduced an updated Surface Studio, an all-in-one desktop, which the company aims at digital artists. It also unveiled a pair of wireless, noise-canceling headphones called Surface Headphones.

All three laptops are equipped with the latest Intel processors, speedy solid-state drives, and a minimum of 8 gigabytes of memory, which is plenty for most consumers’ needs.

The Spectre Folio and Surface Pro also include built-in support for LTE, which lets you connect to high-speed cellular networks for an added fee. That’s not only convenient but also potentially more secure than connecting to your local coffee shop’s WiFi network. (Our advice? Don’t connect to public WiFi without a VPN.)

“We wanted to take what people love about Surface and take it one step further,” Panos Panay, chief product officer at Microsoft, said at a New York City event introducing the new Surface devices.

The Surface Laptop 2 and Surface Pro 6 will both be released Oct. 16 starting at $1,000 and $900, respectively. The HP Spectre Folio will be released Oct. 29 with prices starting at $1,300. The release date for the new Surface Studio and Headphones hasn’t been announced, but Microsoft says these products should be available in time for the holidays.

HP is one of the biggest brands in the computer world, with a wide variety of laptops and desktops for all kinds of users. In fact, there are 26 HP models in Consumer Reports’ ratings, representing a wide range of prices, sizes, and designs. While none are clad in leather like the Spectre Folio, there are models that broadly resemble it in terms of overall looks and functionality. Those include the Spectre x360 and Spectre x2—both of which are recommended by our testers.

Microsoft is a relatively new manufacturer of laptops, despite the dominance of the Windows OS and Microsoft software applications.

Surface devices, including the previous generation Surface Laptop and Surface Pro, have done well in Consumer Reports’ testing, although the recently launched Microsoft Surface Go didn’t fare as well.

We’ll be testing all these new devices when they become available to consumers and will let you know what we find out.
